The effect of national culture on information flow
The primary purpose of this paper is to test the effect of national culture on service provision within Islamic Insurance(Takaful). This paper seeks to incorporate the following constructs: Power distance, information gap and information flow as an observed variable represented by hierarchical driven information gathering and sharing or functional driven information gathering and sharing. The secondary purpose, is to investigate Hofstedeâs claim regarding the homogeneity of Arab culture in which he believes dominated by the religion of Islam. The sample (n=462) were employees of Takaful operators in Kuwait and Egypt, and they completed the questionnaires in a self administrated method. To test the hypotheses, structural equation modelling using Analysis of Moments structure (AMOS) was employed. It was found that there is differences in information flow between Kuwait and Egypt. Kuwait was found low power distance and functional driven information gathering and sharing mediated by low information gap, whereas Egypt was found high power distance provide information in hierarchical driven information gathering and sharing mediated by high information gap. Another finding, was the significant evidence that is not supporting Hofestedâs claim of homogeneity of all Arab culture. Result show clearly how two different Arab countries varies in the services they provide within a sector that unique to the Arab cluster. This paper confirms an existing theory that to the best of the researcher knowledge has never been tested which adds to the body of knowledge in general and Takaful industry in particular how national culture may affect service provision. Secondly, it disconfirm Hofstedeâs claim of homogeneity of the Arab culture as it evidently proves the cultural differences between Kuwait and Egypt
Obesity, perceived weight discrimination, and psychological well-being in older adults in England
Objective To examine whether the adverse effect of obesity on psychological well-being can be explained by weight discrimination. Methods The study sample included 5056 older (â„50 y) men and women living in England and participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported experiences of weight discrimination in everyday life and completed measures of quality of life (CASP-19 scale), life satisfaction (Satisfaction With Life Scale), and depressive symptoms (eight-item CES-D scale). Height and weight were objectively measured, with obesity defined as BMI â„30 kg/m2. Mediation analyses were used to test the role of perceived weight discrimination in the relationship between obesity and each psychological factor. Results Obesity, weight discrimination, and psychological well-being were all significantly inter-related. Mediation models revealed significant indirect effects of obesity through perceived weight discrimination on quality of life (ÎČ = â0.072, SE = 0.008), life satisfaction (ÎČ = â0.038, SE = 0.008), and depressive symptoms (ÎČ = 0.057, SE = 0.008), with perceived weight discrimination explaining approximately 40% (range: 39.5-44.1%) of the total association between obesity and psychological well-being. Conclusions Perceived weight discrimination explains a substantial proportion of the association between obesity and psychological well-being in English older adults. Efforts to reduce weight stigma in society could help to reduce the psychological burden of obesity

Human Resource Management, Service Quality, and Economic Performance in Call Centers
This paper examines the relationship between human resource practices, operational outcomes, and economic performance in call centers. The study draws on a sample of 64 call centers serving the mass market in a large telecommunications services company. Surveys of 1,243 employees in the 64 centers were aggregated to the call center level and matched to archival data on service process quality, as measured by customer surveys; call handling time, revenues per call, and net revenues per call. Our path analysis shows that human resource practices emphasizing employee training, discretion, and rewards lead to higher service quality, higher revenues per call, and higher net revenues per call. In addition, service quality mediates the relationship between human resource practices and these economic outcomes. There is no significant relationship between HR practices and labor efficiency, as measured by call handling time; and labor efficiency is inversely related to revenue generation

To bring this ambition to fruition, EU institutions have gradually expanded their âcomprehensive approach to external conflict and crisisâ (CA) to become a full-fledged âintegrated approach to conflict and crisisâ (IA).1

The mediation between participative leadership and employee exploratory innovation: Examining intermediate knowledge mechanisms

Deploying a time-lagged questionnaire method implemented over four business quarters, data is generated from 1600 paired samples (managers and employees) in R&D units of Taiwanese technology firms.
The structural equation modeling results reveal that (1) participative leadership is positively related to employee exploratory innovation; (2) coworker knowledge and (3) absorptive capacity partially mediate the relationship between participative leadership and employee exploratory innovation independently; and, (4) coworker knowledge sharing in combination with absorptive capacity partially mediates this relationship.
The results extend previous research on participative leadership and innovation by demonstrating that participative leadership is related to employee exploratory innovation (Lee and Meyer-Doyle, 2017; Mom et al., 2009).Results also confirm that participative leadership drives employee exploratory innovation through employee absorptive capacity. This reinforces the need highlighted by Lane et al. (2006) to investigate the role of absorptive capacity at the individual-level. Collectively, while participative leadership is important for employee exploratory innovation it is the knowledge mechanisms existing and interacting at the employee-level that are central to generating increased employee exploratory innovation from this leadership approach

Benefits and challenges of applying Semantic Web Services in the e-Government domain
Joining up services in e-Government usually implies governmental agencies acting in concert without a central control regime. This requires the sharing of scattered and heterogeneous data. Semantic Web Service (SWS) technology can help to integrate, mediate and reason between these datasets. However, since few real-world applications have been developed, it is still unclear which are the actual benefits and issues of adopting such a technology in the e-Government domain. In this paper, we contribute to raising awareness of the potential benefits in the e-Government community by analyzing motivations, requirements, and expected results, before proposing a reusable SWS-based framework. We demonstrate the application of this framework by a compelling use case: a GIS-based emergency planning system. We illustrate the obtained benefits and the key challenges which remain to be addressed
