    Indirect music therapy practice and skill-sharing in dementia care

    Public interest in the benefits of music for people with dementia has rapidly increased in recent years. In addition to clinical work with clients, music therapists are often required to support and train staff, families, and volunteers and skill-share some music therapeutic skills. Six music therapy researchers from six countries agreed it was timely to organize a roundtable and share their indirect music therapy practice and examples of skill-sharing in dementia care. This article was developed following the roundtable at the World Congress of Music Therapy in 2017 and further discussion among the authors. This process highlighted the diversity and complexity of indirect music therapy practice and skill-sharing, but some common components emerged, including: 1) the importance of making clinical decisions about when direct music therapy is necessary and when indirect music therapy is appropriate, 2) supporting the transition from direct music therapy to indirect music therapy, 3) the value of music therapy skill-sharing in training care home staff, 4) the need for considering potential risks and burdens of indirect music therapy practice, and 5) expanding the role of music therapist and cultivating cross-professional dialogues to support organizational changes. In indirect music therapy practice, a therapist typically works with carers and supporters to strengthen their relationships with people with dementia and help them further develop their self-awareness and sense of competence. However, the ultimate goal of indirect music therapy practice in dementia care remains the wellbeing of people living with dementia

As shown in study after study, a widely held belief in the positive value of arts education is shared by parents, teachers, school administrators and arts education experts.This belief is the reason that arts education has historically been an important part of the education of our children in the United States. However, deeper analysis both nationwide and here in Illinois reveals a gap between what individuals, educators and elected officials profess as the value of arts education and what is allocated to arts education in terms of budget, faculty, class time, curriculum, planning and evaluation.Illinois Creates is a broad-based statewide coalition of 150 education, business, civic and arts advocates dedicated to promoting a comprehensive, standards-based arts education program for all Illinois public school students

    International differences in best practice for young onset dementia

    The focus of national and international health and social care policies on the impact of young onset dementia has increased during recent decades. National dementia strategies have aimed to recognise the distinct needs of younger people with dementia and their families and promote evidence-based age-appropriate services via recommendations of good practice. This chapter provides an overview of the different international approaches to the provision of post-diagnostic support, along with examples of good practice across Europe and Australia. Despite the remaining gaps in research and practice, current evidence suggests that significant progress has been made towards establishing the basic principles of good practice in young onset dementia and the fundamental attributes of age-appropriate needs-led services. The increasing pockets of good practice around the world allow for an optimistic view regarding more effective services for young onset dementia in the future

All the publications presented here have been carried out during my time of employment in this post at the Complementary Medicine Unit of the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, United Kingdom. During the first few months of my research post in 2001 1 recognized the importance of the Internet as a tool to obtain healthcare information. Under the supervision of Professor Edzard Ernst, director of CAM, I carried out five Internet surveys, of which I collected and summarized the data and drafted the first version of the manuscripts, which were then finalized by Professor Ernst's comments: * Health risks over the Internet: advice offered by'medical herbalists' to a pregnant woman. * Reflexologists' responses to a patient with abdominal pain -a survey on Internet advice. * Internet advice by acupuncturists -a risk factor for cardiovascular patients? * Are asthma sufferers at risk when consulting chiropractors over the Internet? * Aspects of MMR / MMR vaccination advice over the Internet
