Simple identification tools in FishBase
Simple identification tools for fish species were included in the FishBase information system from its inception. Early tools made use of the relational model and characters like fin ray meristics. Soon pictures and drawings were added as a further help, similar to a field guide. Later came the computerization of existing dichotomous keys, again in combination with pictures and other information, and the ability to restrict possible species by country, area, or taxonomic group. Today, www.FishBase.org offers four different ways to identify species. This paper describes these tools with their advantages and disadvantages, and suggests various options for further
development. It explores the possibility of a holistic and integrated computeraided strategy
FaceQnet: Quality Assessment for Face Recognition based on Deep Learning
In this paper we develop a Quality Assessment approach for face recognition
based on deep learning. The method consists of a Convolutional Neural Network,
FaceQnet, that is used to predict the suitability of a specific input image for
face recognition purposes. The training of FaceQnet is done using the VGGFace2
database. We employ the BioLab-ICAO framework for labeling the VGGFace2 images
with quality information related to their ICAO compliance level. The
groundtruth quality labels are obtained using FaceNet to generate comparison
scores. We employ the groundtruth data to fine-tune a ResNet-based CNN, making
it capable of returning a numerical quality measure for each input image.
Finally, we verify if the FaceQnet scores are suitable to predict the expected
performance when employing a specific image for face recognition with a COTS
face recognition system. Several conclusions can be drawn from this work, most
notably: 1) we managed to employ an existing ICAO compliance framework and a
pretrained CNN to automatically label data with quality information, 2) we
trained FaceQnet for quality estimation by fine-tuning a pre-trained face
recognition network (ResNet-50), and 3) we have shown that the predictions from
FaceQnet are highly correlated with the face recognition accuracy of a
state-of-the-art commercial system not used during development. FaceQnet is

Document Image Analysis for World War II Personal Records
Complete collections of invaluable documents of unique historical and political significance are decaying and at the same time they are virtually inaccessible, necessitating the invention of robust and efficient methods for their conversion into a searchable electronic form. This paper presents the issues encountered and problems addressed in the MEMORIAL project, whose goal is the establishment of a digital document workbench enabling the creation of distributed virtual archives based on documents existing in libraries, archives, museums, memorials, and public record offices. Successful approaches are described in the context of the chosen data class: a variety of typewritten documents containing personal information relating to the presence of individuals in World War II Nazi concentration camps
Semantics-Based Content Extraction in Typewritten Historical Documents
This paper presents a flexible approach to extracting content from scanned historical documents using semantic information. The final electronic document is the result of a "digital historical document lifecycle" process, where the expert knowledge of the historian/archivist user is incorporated at different stages. Results show that such a conversion strategy aided by (expert) user-specified semantic information and which enables the processing of individual parts of the document in a specialised way, produces superior (in a variety of significant ways) results than document analysis and understanding techniques devised for contemporary documents
An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.
This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.
No-reference image quality assessment through the von Mises distribution
An innovative way of calculating the von Mises distribution (VMD) of image
entropy is introduced in this paper. The VMD's concentration parameter and some
fitness parameter that will be later defined, have been analyzed in the
experimental part for determining their suitability as a image quality
assessment measure in some particular distortions such as Gaussian blur or
additive Gaussian noise. To achieve such measure, the local R\'{e}nyi entropy
is calculated in four equally spaced orientations and used to determine the
parameters of the von Mises distribution of the image entropy. Considering
contextual images, experimental results after applying this model show that the
best-in-focus noise-free images are associated with the highest values for the
von Mises distribution concentration parameter and the highest approximation of
image data to the von Mises distribution model. Our defined von Misses fitness
parameter experimentally appears also as a suitable no-reference image quality
assessment indicator for no-contextual images.Comment: 29 pages, 11 figure
