    PPQ-Trajectory : spatio-temporal quantization for querying in large trajectory repositories

    We present PPQ-trajectory, a spatio-temporal quantization based solution for querying large dynamic trajectory data. PPQ-trajectory includes a partition-wise predictive quantizer (PPQ) that generates an error-bounded codebook with autocorrelation and spatial proximity-based partitions. The codebook is indexed to run approximate and exact spatio-temporal queries over compressed trajectories. PPQ-trajectory includes a coordinate quadtree coding for the codebook with support for exact queries. An incremental temporal partition-based index is utilised to avoid full reconstruction of trajectories during queries. An extensive set of experimental results for spatio-temporal queries on real trajectory datasets is presented. PPQ-trajectory shows significant improvements over the alternatives with respect to several performance measures, including the accuracy of results when the summary is used directly to provide approximate query results, the spatial deviation with which spatio-temporal path queries can be answered when the summary is used as an index, and the time taken to construct the summary. Superior results on the quality of the summary and the compression ratio are also demonstrated

    MEDAVET: Traffic Vehicle Anomaly Detection Mechanism based on spatial and temporal structures in vehicle traffic

    Currently, there are computer vision systems that help us with tasks that would be dull for humans, such as surveillance and vehicle tracking. An important part of this analysis is to identify traffic anomalies. An anomaly tells us that something unusual has happened, in this case on the highway. This paper aims to model vehicle tracking using computer vision to detect traffic anomalies on a highway. We develop the steps of detection, tracking, and analysis of traffic: the detection of vehicles from video of urban traffic, the tracking of vehicles using a bipartite graph and the Convex Hull algorithm to delimit moving areas. Finally for anomaly detection we use two data structures to detect the beginning and end of the anomaly. The first is the QuadTree that groups vehicles that are stopped for a long time on the road and the second that approaches vehicles that are occluded. Experimental results show that our method is acceptable on the Track4 test set, with an F1 score of 85.7% and a mean squared error of 25.432.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Journal of Internet Services and Applications - JIS

    Yellow Tree: A Distributed Main-memory Spatial Index Structure for Moving Objects

    Mobile devices equipped with wireless technologies to communicate and positioning systems to locate objects of interest are common place today, providing the impetus to develop location-aware applications. At the heart of location-aware applications are moving objects or objects that continuously change location over time, such as cars in transportation networks or pedestrians or postal packages. Location-aware applications tend to support the tracking of very large numbers of such moving objects as well as many users that are interested in finding out about the locations of other moving objects. Such location-aware applications rely on support from database management systems to model, store, and query moving object data. The management of moving object data exposes the limitations of traditional (spatial) database management systems as well as their index structures designed to keep track of objects\u27 locations. Spatial index structures that have been designed for geographic objects in the past primarily assume data are foremost of static nature (e.g., land parcels, road networks, or airport locations), thus requiring a limited amount of index structure updates and reorganization over a period of time. While handling moving objects however, there is an incumbent need for continuous reorganization of spatial index structures to remain up to date with constantly and rapidly changing object locations. This research addresses some of the key issues surrounding the efficient database management of moving objects whose location update rate to the database system varies from 1 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, we address the design of a highly scaleable and efficient spatial index structure to support location tracking and querying of large amounts of moving objects. We explore the possible architectural and the data structure level changes that are required to handle large numbers of moving objects. We focus specifically on the index structures that are needed to process spatial range queries and object-based queries on constantly changing moving object data. We argue for the case of main memory spatial index structures that dynamically adapt to continuously changing moving object data and concurrently answer spatial range queries efficiently. A proof-of concept implementation called the yellow tree, which is a distributed main-memory index structure, and a simulated environment to generate moving objects is demonstrated. Using experiments conducted on simulated moving object data, we conclude that a distributed main-memory based spatial index structure is required to handle dynamic location updates and efficiently answer spatial range queries on moving objects. Future work on enhancing the query processing performance of yellow tree is also discussed

    Efficient Large-scale Distance-Based Join Queries in SpatialHadoop

    Efficient processing of Distance-Based Join Queries (DBJQs) in spatial databases is of paramount importance in many application domains. The most representative and known DBJQs are the K Closest Pairs Query (KCPQ) and the ε Distance Join Query (εDJQ). These types of join queries are characterized by a number of desired pairs (K) or a distance threshold (ε) between the components of the pairs in the final result, over two spatial datasets. Both are expensive operations, since two spatial datasets are combined with additional constraints. Given the increasing volume of spatial data originating from multiple sources and stored in distributed servers, it is not always efficient to perform DBJQs on a centralized server. For this reason, this paper addresses the problem of computing DBJQs on big spatial datasets in SpatialHadoop, an extension of Hadoop that supports efficient processing of spatial queries in a cloud-based setting. We propose novel algorithms, based on plane-sweep, to perform efficient parallel DBJQs on large-scale spatial datasets in Spatial Hadoop. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms in several situations with large real-world as well as synthetic datasets. The experiments demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our proposed methodologies

    Location Dependent Queries (LDQs) benefit from the rapid advances in communication and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies to track moving objects\u27 locations, and improve the quality-of-life by providing location relevant services and information to end users. The enormity of the underlying data maintained by LDQ applications - a large quantity of mobile objects and their frequent mobility - is, however, a major obstacle in providing effective and efficient services. Motivated by this obstacle, this thesis sets out in the quest to find improved methods to efficiently index, access, retrieve, and update volatile LDQ related mobile object data and information.     A conceptual framework for developing dashboards for big mobility data

    Dashboards are an increasingly popular form of data visualization. Large, complex, and dynamic mobility data present a number of challenges in dashboard design. The overall aim for dashboard design is to improve information communication and decision making, though big mobility data in particular require considering privacy alongside size and complexity. Taking these issues into account, a gap remains between wrangling mobility data and developing meaningful dashboard output. Therefore, there is a need for a framework that bridges this gap to support the mobility dashboard development and design process. In this paper we outline a conceptual framework for mobility data dashboards that provides guidance for the development process while considering mobility data structure, volume, complexity, varied application contexts, and privacy constraints. We illustrate the proposed framework’s components and process using example mobility dashboards with varied inputs, end-users and objectives. Overall, the framework offers a basis for developers to understand how informational displays of big mobility data are determined by end-user needs as well as the types of data selection, transformation, and display available to particular mobility datasets

    Efficient Spatial Dataset Search over Multiple Data Sources

    In this paper, we investigate a novel spatial dataset search paradigm over multiple spatial data sources, which enables users to conduct join and union searches seamlessly. Specifically, we define two search problems called Maximum Intersection Query (MIQ) and Maximum Coverage Query with a Connection constraint (MCQC). To address these problems, we propose a unified Multi-source Spatial Dataset Search (MSDS) framework. In MSDS, we design a multi-layer index to accelerate the MIQ and MCQC. In addition, we prove that the MCQC is NP-hard and design two greedy algorithms to solve the problem. To deal with the constant update of spatial datasets in each data source, we design a dynamic index updating strategy and optimize search algorithms to reduce communication costs and improve search efficiency. We evaluate the efficiency of MSDS on five real-world data sources, and the experimental results show that our framework is able to achieve a significant reduction in running time and communication cost
