    Timeflies: Push-pull signal-function functional reactive programming

    Functional Reactive Programming (FRP) is a promising class of abstractions for interactive programs. FRP systems provide values defined at all points in time (behaviors or signals) and values defined at countably many points in time (events) as abstractions. Signal-function FRP is a subclass of FRP which does not provide direct access to time-varying values to the programmer, but instead provides signal functions, which are reactive transformers of signals and events, as first-class objects in the program. All signal-function implementations of FRP to date have utilized demand-driven or pull-based evaluation for both events and signals, producing output from the FRP system whenever the consumer of the output is ready. This greatly simplifies the implementation of signal-function FRP systems, but leads to inefficient and wasteful evaluation of the FRP system when this strategy is employed to evaluate events, because the components of the signal function which process events must be computed whether or not there is an event occurrence. In contrast, an input-driven or push-based system evaluates the network whenever new input is available. This frees the system from evaluating the network when nothing has changed, and then only the components necessary to react to the input are re-evaluated. This form of evaluation has been applied to events in standard FRP systems but not in signal-function FRP systems. I describe the design and implementation of a signal-function FRP system which applies pull-based evaluation to signals and push-based evaluation to events (a push-pull system). The semantics of the system are discussed, and its performance and expressiveness for practical examples of interactive programs are compared to existing signal-function FRP systems through the implementation of a networking application

    Asynchronous Monad for Reactive IoT Programming

    The widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) has given rise to systems which must reactively process signal data, while maintaining latency and throughput constraints. While the reactive programming paradigm partially addresses this problem, it does not offer a complete solution. We propose a design for a monad, AsyncM, and apply it to implement push-pull functional reactive programming (FRP) where side-effect bound events are performed in low-latency push streams, and time-series computations are performed in demand-driven pull streams. The design uses implicitly threaded cancellation tokens and continuation passing style to allow for implementations in languages which have single-threaded event-loops as well as languages which have multi-threading. We present our abstractions Stream, Signal, and Behavior and their functor, applicative, and (when applicable) monadic instances. We demonstrate how push streams (Stream) can be converted to pull streams (Signal) (and visa versa) to apply our model to practical use cases. We give a use case of a real-time IoT data analytics platform to demonstrate our design\u27s industrial significance where signal sample rates can change dynamically based on unknown factors such as network speed and processor resources. Application of the design to dynamic languages is shown throughout the paper in a reference JavaScript implementation

    Stream processing is mainstream (again): Widely-used stream libraries are now available for virtually all modern OO and functional languages, from Java to C# to Scala to OCaml to Haskell. Yet expressivity and performance are still lacking. For instance, the popular, well-optimized Java 8 streams do not support the zip operator and are still an order of magnitude slower than hand-written loops. We present the first approach that represents the full generality of stream processing and eliminates overheads, via the use of staging. It is based on an unusually rich semantic model of stream interaction. We support any combination of zipping, nesting (or flat-mapping), sub-ranging, filtering, mapping-of finite or infinite streams. Our model captures idiosyncrasies that a programmer uses in optimizing stream pipelines, such as rate differences and the choice of a "for" vs. "while" loops. Our approach delivers hand-written-like code, but automatically. It explicitly avoids the reliance on black-box optimizers and sufficiently-smart compilers, offering highest, guaranteed and portable performance. Our approach relies on high-level concepts that are then readily mapped into an implementation. Accordingly, we have two distinct implementations: an OCaml stream library, staged via MetaOCaml, and a Scala library for the JVM, staged via LMS. In both cases, we derive libraries richer and simultaneously many tens of times faster than past work. We greatly exceed in performance the standard stream libraries available in Java, Scala and OCaml, including the well-optimized Java 8 streams

    Reactivity, the ability to detect and react to events, is an essential functionality in many information systems. In particular, Web systems such as online marketplaces, adaptive (e.g., recommender) systems, and Web services, react to events such as Web page updates or data posted to a server. This article investigates issues of relevance in designing high-level programming languages dedicated to reactivity on the Web. It presents twelve theses on features desirable for a language of reactive rules tuned to programming Web and Semantic Web applications

    Concurrency Controls in Event-Driven Programs

    Functional reactive programming (FRP) is a programming paradigm that utilizes the concepts of functional programming and time-varying data types to create event-driven applications. In this paradigm, data types in which values can change over time are primitives and can be applied to functions. These values are composable and can be combined with functions to create values that react to changes in values from multiple sources. Events can be modeled as values that change in discrete time steps. Computation can be encoded as values that produce events, with combination operators, it enables us to write concurrent event-driven programs by combining the concurrent computation as events. Combined with the denotational approach of functional programming, we can write programs in a concise manner. The style of event-driven programming has been widely adopted for developing graphical user interface applications, since they need to process events concurrently to stay responsive. This makes FRP a fitting approach for managing complex state and handling of events concurrently. In recent years, real-time systems such as IoT (internet of things) applications have become an important field of computation. Applying FRP to real-time systems is still an active area of research.For IoT applications, they are commonly tasked to perform data capturing in real time and transmit them to other devices. They need to exchange data with other applications over the internet and respond in a timely manner. The data needs to be processed, for simple analysis or more computation intensive work such as machine learning. Designing applications that perform these tasks and remain efficient and responsive can be challenging. In this thesis, we demonstrate that FRP is a suitable approach for real-time applications. These applications require soft real-time requirements, where systems can tolerate tasks that fail to meet the deadline and the results of these tasks might still be useful.First, we design the concurrency abstractions needed for supporting asynchronous computation and use it as the basis for building the FRP abstraction. Our implementation is in Haskell, a functional programming language with a rich type system that allows us to model abstractions with ease. The concurrency abstraction is based on some of the ideas from the Haskell solution for asynchronous computation, which elegantly supports cancelation in a composable way. Based on the Haskell implementation, we extend our design with operators that are more suitable for building web applications. We translate our implementation to JavaScript as it is more commonly used for web application development, and implementing the RxJS interface. RxJS is a popular JavaScript library for reactive programming in web applications. By implementing the RxJS interface, we argue that our programming model implemented in Haskell is also applicable in mainstream languages such as JavaScript

    State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity

    This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages to be carried out within the Rewerse project. From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs; in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks

    A Transactional Model and Platform for Designing and Implementing Reactive Systems

    A reactive program is one that has ongoing interactions with its environment. Reactive programs include those for embedded systems, operating systems, network clients and servers, databases, and smart phone apps. Reactive programs are already a core part of our computational and physical infrastructure and will continue to proliferate within our society as new form factors, e.g. wireless sensors, and inexpensive (wireless) networking are applied to new problems. Asynchronous concurrency is a fundamental characteristic of reactive systems that makes them difficult to develop. Threads are commonly used for implementing reactive systems, but they may magnify problems associated with asynchronous concurrency, as there is a gap between the semantics of thread-based computation and the semantics of reactive systems: reactive software developed with threads often has subtle timing bugs and tends to be brittle and non-reusable as a holistic understanding of the software becomes necessary to avoid concurrency hazards such as data races, deadlock, and livelock. Based on these problems with the state of the art, we believe a new model for developing and implementing reactive systems is necessary. This dissertation makes four contributions to the state of the art in reactive systems. First, we propose a formal yet practical model for (asynchronous) reactive systems called reactive components. A reactive component is a set of state variables and atomic transitions that can be composed with other reactive components to yield another reactive component. The transitions in a system of reactive components are executed by a scheduler. The reactive component model is based on concepts from temporal logic and models like UNITY and I/O Automata. The major contribution of the reactive component model is a formal method for principled composition, which ensures that 1) the result of composition is always another reactive component, for consistency of reasoning; 2) systems may be decomposed to an arbitrary degree and depth, to foster divide-and-conquer approaches when designing and re-use when implementing; 3)~the behavior of a reactive component can be stated in terms of its interface, which is necessary for abstraction; and 4) properties of reactive components that are derived from transitions protected by encapsulation are preserved through composition and can never be violated, which permits assume-guarantee reasoning. Second, we develop a prototypical programming language for reactive components called rcgo that is based on the syntax and semantics of the Go programming language. The semantics of the rcgo language enforce various aspects of the reactive component model, e.g., the isolation of state between components and safety of concurrency properties, while permitting a number of useful programming techniques, e.g., reference and move semantics for efficient communication among reactive components. For tractability, we assume that each system contains a fixed set of components in a fixed configuration. Third, we provide an interpreter for the rcgo language to test the practicality of the assumptions upon which the reactive component model are founded. The interpreter contains an algorithm that checks for composition hazards like recursively defined transitions and non-deterministic transitions. Transitions are executed using a novel calling convention that can be implemented efficiently on existing architectures. The run-time system also contains two schedulers that use the results of composition analysis to execute non-interfering transitions concurrently. Fourth, we compare the performance of each scheduler in the interpreter to the performance of a custom compiled multi-threaded program, for two reactive systems. For one system, the combination of the implementation and hardware biases it toward an event-based solution, which was confirmed when the reactive component implementation outperformed the custom implementation due to reduced context switching. For the other system, the custom implementation is not prone to excessive context switches and outperformed the reactive component implementations. These results demonstrate that reactive components may be a viable alternative to threads in practice, but that additional work is necessary to generalize this claim
