    Middeck Active Control Experiment (MACE), phase A

    A rationale to determine which structural experiments are sufficient to verify the design of structures employing Controlled Structures Technology was derived. A survey of proposed NASA missions was undertaken to identify candidate test articles for use in the Middeck Active Control Experiment (MACE). The survey revealed that potential test articles could be classified into one of three roles: development, demonstration, and qualification, depending on the maturity of the technology and the mission the structure must fulfill. A set of criteria was derived that allowed determination of which role a potential test article must fulfill. A review of the capabilities and limitations of the STS middeck was conducted. A reference design for the MACE test article was presented. Computing requirements for running typical closed-loop controllers was determined, and various computer configurations were studied. The various components required to manufacture the structure were identified. A management plan was established for the remainder of the program experiment development, flight and ground systems development, and integration to the carrier. Procedures for configuration control, fiscal control, and safety, reliabilty, and quality assurance were developed

    The computing system design of IPAD is described and the requirements which form the basis for the system design are discussed. The system is presented in terms of a functional design description and technical design specifications. The functional design specifications give the detailed description of the system design using top-down structured programming methodology. Human behavioral characteristics, which specify the system design at the user interface, security considerations, and standards for system design, implementation, and maintenance are also part of the technical design specifications. Detailed specifications of the two most common computing system types in use by the major aerospace companies which could support the IPAD system design are presented. The report of a study to investigate migration of IPAD software between the two candidate 3rd generation host computing systems and from these systems to a 4th generation system is included

    Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services

    The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified

    Unified Synchronized Data Acquisition Networks

    The permanently evolving technical area of communication technology and the presence of more and more precise sensors and detectors, enable options and solutions to challenges in science and industry. In high-energy physics, for example, it becomes possible with accurate measurements to observe particles almost at the speed of light in small-sized dimensions. Thereby, the enormous amounts of gathered data require modern high performance communication networks. Potential and efficient implementation of future readout chains will depend on new concepts and mechanisms. The main goals of this dissertation are to create new efficient synchronization mechanisms and to evolve readout systems for optimization of future sensor and detector systems. This happens in the context of the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment, which is a part of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, an international accelerator facility. It extends an accelerator complex in Darmstadt at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH. Initially, the challenges are specified and an analysis of the state of the art is presented. The resulting constraints and requirements influenced the design and development described within this dissertation. Subsequently, the different design and implementation tasks are discussed. Starting with the basic detector read system requirements and the definition of an efficient communication protocol. This protocol delivers all features needed for building of compact and efficient readout systems. Therefore, it is advantageous to use a single unified connection for processing all communication traffic. This means not only data, control, and synchronization messages, but also clock distribution is handled. Furthermore, all links in this system have a deterministic latency. The deterministic behavior enables establishing a synchronous network. Emerging problems were solved and the concept was successfully implemented and tested during several test beam times. In addition, the implementation and integration of this communication methodology into different network devices is described. Therefore, a generic modular approach was created. This enhances ASIC development by supporting them with proven hardware IPs, reducing design time, and risk of failure. Furthermore, this approach delivers flexibility concerning data rate and structure for the network system. Additionally, the design and prototyping for a data aggregation and concentrator ASIC is described. In conjunction with a dense electrical to optical conversion, this ASIC enables communication with flexible readout structures for the experiment and delivers the planned capacities and bandwidth. In the last part of the work, analysis and transfer of the created innovative synchronization mechanism into the area of high performance computing is discussed. Finally, a conclusion of all reached results and an outlook of possible future activities and research tasks within the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment are presented

    Hybrid Smart Transformer for Enhanced Power System Protection Against DC With Advanced Grid Support

    The traditional grid is rapidly transforming into smart substations and grid assets incorporating advanced control equipment with enhanced functionalities and rapid self-healing features. The most important and strategic equipment in the substation is the transformer and is expected to perform a variety of functions beyond mere voltage conversion and isolation. While the concept of smart solid-state transformers (SSTs) is being widely recognized, their respective lifetime and reliability raise concerns, thus hampering the complete replacement of traditional transformers with SSTs. Under this scenario, introducing smart features in conventional transformers utilizing simple, cost-effective, and easy to install modules is a highly desired and logical solution. This dissertation is focused on the design and evaluation of a power electronics-based module integrated between the neutral of power transformers and substation ground. The proposed module transforms conventional transformers into hybrid smart transformers (HST). The HST enhances power system protection against DC flow in grid that could result from solar storms, high-elevation nuclear explosions, monopolar or ground return mode (GRM) operation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission and non-ideal switching in inverter-based resources (IBRs). The module also introduces a variety of advanced grid-support features in conventional transformers. These include voltage regulation, voltage and impedance balancing, harmonics isolation, power flow control and voltage ride through (VRT) capability for distributed energy resources (DERs) or grid connected IBRs. The dissertation also proposes and evaluates a hybrid bypass switch for HST module and associated transformer protection during high-voltage events at the module output, such as, ground faults, inrush currents, lightning and switching transients. The proposed strategy is evaluated on a scaled hardware prototype utilizing controller hardware-in-the-loop (C-HIL) and power hardware-in-the-loop (P-HIL) techniques. The dissertation also provides guidelines for field implementation and deployment of the proposed HST scheme. The device is proposed as an all-inclusive solution to multiple grid problems as it performs a variety of functions that are currently being performed through separate devices increasing efficiency and justifying its installation

    Design And Implementation Of Co-Operative Control Strategy For Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids

    This thesis is mainly divided in two major sections: 1) Modelling and control of AC microgrid, DC microgrid, Hybrid AC/DC microgrid using distributed co-operative control, and 2) Development of a four bus laboratory prototype of an AC microgrid system. At first, a distributed cooperative control (DCC) for a DC microgrid considering the state-of-charge (SoC) of the batteries in a typical plug-in-electric-vehicle (PEV) is developed. In DC microgrids, this methodology is developed to assist the load sharing amongst the distributed generation units (DGs), according to their ratings with improved voltage regulation. Subsequently, a DCC based control algorithm for AC microgrid is also investigated to improve the performance of AC microgrid in terms of power sharing among the DGs, voltage regulation and frequency deviation. The results validate the advantages of the proposed methodology as compared to traditional droop control of AC microgrid. The DCC-based control methodology for AC microgrid and DC microgrid are further expanded to develop a DCC-based power management algorithm for hybrid AC/DC microgrid. The developed algorithm for hybrid microgrid controls the power flow through the interfacing converter (IC) between the AC and DC microgrids. This will facilitate the power sharing between the DGs according to their power ratings. Moreover, it enables the fixed scheduled power delivery at different operating conditions, while maintaining good voltage regulation and improved frequency profile. The second section provides a detailed explanation and step-by-step design and development of an AC/DC microgrid testbed. Controllers for the three-phase inverters are designed and tested on different generation units along with their corresponding inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) filters to eliminate the switching frequency harmonics. Electric power distribution line models are developed to form the microgrid network topology. Voltage and current sensors are placed in the proper positions to achieve a full visibility over the microgrid. A running average filter (RAF) based enhanced phase-locked-loop (EPLL) is designed and implemented to extract frequency and phase angle information. A PLL-based synchronizing scheme is also developed to synchronize the DGs to the microgrid. The developed laboratory prototype runs on dSpace platform for real time data acquisition, communication and controller implementation
