    Digitale Brillen, deren prominenteste Vertreterin wohl Google Glass sein dĂŒrfte, stehen an der Schwelle, ein verbreitetes Konsumentenprodukt zu werden – spĂ€testens dann, wenn sich das System auch mit vorhandenen Brillen kombinieren lĂ€sst. Als erweitertes Display eines Smartphones versprechen solche Systeme, Informationen «auf einen Blick» quasi nebenbei zu prĂ€sentieren, spontan Bilder und Filme der eigenen Umgebung festzuhalten und persönliche Textnachrichten ad hoc lesen und beantworten zu können. Die Integration ortsbezogener Informationen ermöglicht darĂŒber hinaus – neben der Abbildung von Navigationsinformationen – den Einbezug lokaler Informationen, beispielsweise zu SehenswĂŒrdigkeiten oder zu in der nahen Umgebung verfĂŒgbaren Produkten. Es dĂŒrfte nicht unwahrscheinlich sein, dass die Nutzung von digitalen Brillen auch wĂ€hrend der aktiven Teilnahme am Strassenverkehr stattfindet, was folglich einen Einfluss auf das Verhalten im Strassenverkehr impliziert. Zu klĂ€ren ist, welche QualitĂ€t diese Einwirkung besitzt und ob in der Gesamtbilanz von einer eher positiven oder negativen Wirkung auf die Verkehrssicherheit zu erwarten ist. Der Blick richtet sich dabei vorwiegend auf allfĂ€llige Effekte in der Rolle als Fahrzeuglenkende, Ableitungen mit Bezug auf den Langsamverkehr sind – eingeschrĂ€nkt – jedoch möglich

    The Role of Early User Participation in Discovering Software – A Case Study from the Context of Smart Glasses

    Smart glasses facilitate advanced user interaction and increase workplace efficiency through innovation. Yet, their capabilities rely on user-driven discovery of new software that harnesses its benefits. This study investigates user participation during the discovery of new software, leveraging this emergent technology. We investigate user participation during software product discovery, i.e. during early activities that precede classical development and design activities, through an in-depth longitudinal case study with two representative user organizations. The results suggest an evolutionary perspective toward the benefits of different types of user participation: 1) user as a source of information, 2) user as a co-creator, and 3) user as an innovator. Practitioners benefit from our lessons learned, validation and extension of software discovery toward the emergent technology, and recommendations to apply user-driven software discovery. We distill three lessons: evolving types of user participation, enhancing desirability through user participation, and carefully discovering software products for emergent technologies

    Evaluation of interactive collaboration for 3D spacecraft development in Augmented Reality

    Planning and designing spacecrafts is a complex process. It requires experts of different domains to collaborate together. At the end of the design process, a configuration engineer has to create a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) sketch of the spacecraft. This has to be revised often due to conflicts between requirements of spacecraft components. Thus, communication is crucial for understanding each discipline’s requirements. At German Aerospace Center (DLR), a room especially designed for collaborative spacecraft engineering exists called Concurrent Engineering Facility (CEF). In order to support the communication, 3D visualization is already used in the CEF, but also in general in the industry. Recent Augmented Reality (AR) headsets like the Microsoft HoloLens 2 offer natural interaction with 3D holograms placed in the user’s real environment. The aim is to support interdisciplinary communication by connecting multiple Microsoft HoloLens 2 devices over network to enable real-time collaboration on an interactive 3D visualization of a spacecraft in a shared environment. For that, a prototype is implemented that fetches visualization data from the DLR’s data model for spacecraft development Virtual Satellite 4. It allows manipulating individual spacecraft parts with handgestures. In addition, multiple devices can be connected in a network session via the network library NetMQ 4. To evaluate the prototype’s usability, potential usefulness and ability to resolve interdisciplinary conflicts between requirements, a user study is conducted in the CEF. The results show that the prototype is user-friendly in general and that its tools are useful. However, its relevance for solving interdisciplinary conflicts during the spacecraft configuration process is controversial. Furthermore, the communication between users wearing a HoloLens 2 which runs the application is good. Also, its potential usefulness in the CEF in general as well as acceptance of such technology is given

    HOW TO INTERACT WITH AR HEAD MOUNTED DEVICES IN CARE WORK? A STUDY COMPARING HANDHELD TOUCH (HANDS-ON) AND GESTURE (HANDS-FREE) INTERACTION

    In this paper, we describe a study investigating augmented reality (AR) to support caregivers. We implemented a system called Care Lenses that supports various care tasks on AR head-mounted devices. For its application, one question was how caregivers could interact with the system while providing care, that is, while using one or both hands for care tasks. Therefore, we compared two mechanisms to interact with the CareLenses (handheld touch similar to touchpads and touchscreens and head gestures). We found that certain head gestures were difficult to apply in practice, but that except from this head gesture support was as usable and useful as handheld touch interaction, although the study participants were much more familiar with the handheld touch control. We conclude that head gestures can be a good means to enable AR support in care, and we provide design considerations to make them more applicable in practice

    A study on the partnership programme of a public umbilical cord blood bank in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A critical realist approach

    Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a rich source of stem cells for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant diseases. Many countries have a public banking system where donors’ UCB can be stored and used within the public health system. Aim: This study aimed to identify the reasons for a decline in the UCB collection rate at a public UCBB programme in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The barriers inhibiting the UCB collection programme, and the facilitators aiding it were investigated. The UCB programme relied on midwives’ voluntary and parent participation and this study focused on these relationships and their impact. Methodology: A critical realism (CR) study was conducted to understand the cause of the decline in UCB collection and donation rates. Thirty-seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with UCB nurses, policymakers, midwives, antenatal nurses, obstetricians and mothers. Field notes and documentary review were also used as part of data collection. Data were analysed using critical realist analysis. Results: Three barriers were distilled from the critical realist analysis. Firstly, the lack of clear leadership and supervision led to confusion regarding different policies, logistical problems, and a lack of motivation to participate. Secondly, the current UCB nurses lacked the necessary soft skills and broader nursing experience to establish a strong working relationship with the primary hospital maternity department’s midwives in order to handle the parents’ needs. Finally, the parents’ lack of understanding about the programme, combined with their educational background, allowed superstitions and other cultural practices to discourage them from donating. This was worsened by poorly timed consent-seeking procedures. UCB nurses were also poorly trained in the UCB programme. These barriers interacted closely with each other and resulted in the systemic failure of the UCB programme whilst the altruistic nature of UCB donation aligned well with Islamic values and served as a facilitator. Conclusion and recommendations: A decline in the rate of UCB collection and donation is a result of the complex interplay of the three barriers mentioned above within the UCB programme. The roles of the midwives and UCB nurses should be reconsidered, appropriate training and incentives need to be in place, and these must be cemented within the policy documentation

    How to Interact with Augmented Reality Head Mounted Devices in Care Work? A Study Comparing Handheld Touch (Hands-on) and Gesture (Hands-free) Interaction

    In this paper, we investigate augmented reality (AR) to support caregivers. We implemented a system called Care Lenses that supported various care tasks on AR head-mounted devices. For its application, one question concerned how caregivers could interact with the system while providing care (i.e., while using one or both hands for care tasks). Therefore, we compared two mechanisms to interact with the Care Lenses (handheld touch similar to touchpads and touchscreens and head gestures). We found that head gestures were difficult to apply in practice, but except for that the head gesture support was as usable and useful as handheld touch interaction, although the study participants were much more familiar with the handheld touch control.
