Calibration of force actuators on an adaptive secondary prototype
In the context of the Large Binocular Telescope project, we present the
results of force actuator calibrations performed on an adaptive secondary
prototype called P45, a thin deformable glass with magnets glued onto its back.
Electromagnetic actuators, controlled in a closed loop with a system of
internal metrology based on capacitive sensors, continuously deform its shape
to correct the distortions of the wavefront. Calibrations of the force
actuators are needed because of the differences between driven forces and
measured forces. We describe the calibration procedures and the results,
obtained with errors of less than 1.5%.Comment: 7 page

SEIS: Insight's Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure of Mars.
By the end of 2018, 42 years after the landing of the two Viking seismometers on Mars, InSight will deploy onto Mars' surface the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument; a six-axes seismometer equipped with both a long-period three-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) instrument and a three-axes short-period (SP) instrument. These six sensors will cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 Hz to 50 Hz, with possible extension to longer periods. Data will be transmitted in the form of three continuous VBB components at 2 sample per second (sps), an estimation of the short period energy content from the SP at 1 sps and a continuous compound VBB/SP vertical axis at 10 sps. The continuous streams will be augmented by requested event data with sample rates from 20 to 100 sps. SEIS will improve upon the existing resolution of Viking's Mars seismic monitoring by a factor of ∼ 2500 at 1 Hz and ∼ 200 000 at 0.1 Hz. An additional major improvement is that, contrary to Viking, the seismometers will be deployed via a robotic arm directly onto Mars' surface and will be protected against temperature and wind by highly efficient thermal and wind shielding. Based on existing knowledge of Mars, it is reasonable to infer a moment magnitude detection threshold of M w ∼ 3 at 40 ∘ epicentral distance and a potential to detect several tens of quakes and about five impacts per year. In this paper, we first describe the science goals of the experiment and the rationale used to define its requirements. We then provide a detailed description of the hardware, from the sensors to the deployment system and associated performance, including transfer functions of the seismic sensors and temperature sensors. Design of an electrochemical micromachining machine
Electrochemical micromachining (μECM) is a non-conventional machining process based on the phenomenon of electrolysis. μECM became an attractive area of research due to the fact that this process does not create any defective layer after machining and that there is a growing demand for better surface integrity on different micro applications including microfluidics systems, stress-free drilled holes in automotive and aerospace manufacturing with complex shapes, etc. This work presents the design of a next generation μECM machine for the automotive, aerospace, medical and metrology sectors. It has three axes of motion (X, Y, Z) and a spindle allowing the tool-electrode to rotate during machining. The linear slides for each axis use air bearings with linear DC brushless motors and 2-nm resolution encoders for ultra precise motion. The control system is based on the Power PMAC motion controller from Delta Tau. The electrolyte tank is located at the rear of the machine and allows the electrolyte to be changed quickly. This machine features two process control algorithms: fuzzy logic control and adaptive feed rate. A self-developed pulse generator has been mounted and interfaced with the machine and a wire ECM grinding device has been added. Testing a CMOS operational amplifier circuit using a combination of oscillation and IDDQ test methods
This work presents a case study, which attempts to improve the fault diagnosis and testability of the oscillation testing methodology applied to a typical two-stage CMOS operational amplifier. The proposed test method takes the advantage of good fault coverage through the use of a simple oscillation based test technique, which needs no test signal generation and combines it with quiescent supply current (IDDQ) testing to provide a fault confirmation. A built in current sensor (BICS), which introduces insignificant performance degradation of the circuit-under-test (CUT), has been utilized to monitor the power supply quiescent current changes in the CUT. The testability has also been enhanced in the testing procedure using a simple fault-injection technique. The approach is attractive for its simplicity, robustness and capability of built-in-self test (BIST) implementation. It can also be generalized to the oscillation based test structures of other CMOS analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits. The practical results and simulations confirm the functionality of the proposed test method
