Smart Microgrids: Overview and Outlook
The idea of changing our energy system from a hierarchical design into a set
of nearly independent microgrids becomes feasible with the availability of
small renewable energy generators. The smart microgrid concept comes with
several challenges in research and engineering targeting load balancing,
pricing, consumer integration and home automation. In this paper we first
provide an overview on these challenges and present approaches that target the
problems identified. While there exist promising algorithms for the particular
field, we see a missing integration which specifically targets smart
microgrids. Therefore, we propose an architecture that integrates the presented
approaches and defines interfaces between the identified components such as
generators, storage, smart and \dq{dumb} devices.Comment: presented at the GI Informatik 2012, Braunschweig Germany, Smart Grid

Reliability assessment of microgrid with renewable generation and prioritized loads
With the increase in awareness about the climate change, there has been a
tremendous shift towards utilizing renewable energy sources (RES). In this
regard, smart grid technologies have been presented to facilitate higher
penetration of RES. Microgrids are the key components of the smart grids.
Microgrids allow integration of various distributed energy resources (DER) such
as the distributed generation (DGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) into the
distribution system and hence remove or delay the need for distribution
expansion. One of the crucial requirements for utilities is to ensure that the
system reliability is maintained with the inclusion of microgrid topology.
Therefore, this paper evaluates the reliability of a microgrid containing
prioritized loads and distributed RES through a hybrid analytical-simulation
method. The stochasticity of RES introduces complexity to the reliability
evaluation. The method takes into account the variability of RES through Monte-
Carlo state sampling simulation. The results indicate the reliability
enhancement of the overall system in the presence of the microgrid topology. In
particular, the highest priority load has the largest improvement in the
reliability indices. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is performed to
understand the effects of the failure of microgrid islanding in the case of a
fault in the upstream network
Consensual negotiation-based decision making for connected appliances in smart home management systems
Recently, the concept of Internet of Agent has been introduced as a potential technology that pushes intelligence, data processing, analytics and communication capabilities down to the point where the data originates. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for a Decentralized Home Energy Management System by applying the Internet of Agent concept. In particular, we first present an Internet of Agent framework in terms of sensing, communicating and collaborating among connected appliances. Then, the decentralized management based on consensual negotiation mechanism with several intelligent techniques are proposed for dynamic scheduling connected appliance. Specifically, by applying the Internet of Agent framework, connected appliances are regarded as smart agents that are able to make individual decisions by reaching agreement over the exchange of operations on competitive resources. Furthermore, in this study, the load balancing problem in which load shifting is able to reduce the electricity demand during peak hours is taken into account in order to emphasize the effectiveness of our approach. For the experiment, we develop a simulation of smart home environment to evaluate our approach using NetLogo, a tool which provides real-time analysis in the modeling and simulation domain of complex systems. This research was supported by the Chung-Ang University Research Grants in 2018. Preference Elicitation and Reasoning While Smart Shifting of Home Appliances
AbstractA crucial part of the total electricity demand is energy consumption in the residential sector. In parallel to optimizing energy consumption within houses, user comfort is still an essential success criterion for automated solutions used within the house. Choosing the most comfortable appliance schedule is often a challenging task for the members of the house. To bring focus on this challenge, residential customer involvement is enhanced by a trend towards automation of appliances. This trend is reflected by pilot projects such as Linear which uses automated smart appliances at the demand side to attain more flexibility in the electricity system. Moreover, industrial interest from the Telecom, energy and household appliance sector to promote smart schedules for appliances is growing. To meet this trend, this paper describes new ways to model and reason with the user preferences when scheduling appliances in a household under dynamic pricing schemes given different user preferences. These methods have been proven to be efficient in eliciting and computing the user preferences to increase the user comfort in the house
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,
