    Blog Style Classification: Refining Affective Blogs

    In the constantly growing blogosphere with no restrictions on form or topic, a number of writing styles and genres have emerged. Recognition and classification of these styles has become significant for information processing with an aim to improve blog search or sentiment mining. One of the main issues in this field is detection of informative and affective articles. However, such differentiation does not suffice today. In this paper we extend the differentiation and suggest a fine-grained set of subcategories for affective articles. We propose and evaluate a classification method employing novel lexical, morphological, lightweight syntactic and structural features of written text. The results show that our method outperforms the existing approaches

    A Human-Centered Review of Algorithms in Homelessness Research

    Homelessness is a humanitarian challenge affecting an estimated 1.6 billion people worldwide. In the face of rising homeless populations in developed nations and a strain on social services, government agencies are increasingly adopting data-driven models to determine one's risk of experiencing homelessness and assigning scarce resources to those in need. We conducted a systematic literature review of 57 papers to understand the evolution of these decision-making algorithms. We investigated trends in computational methods, predictor variables, and target outcomes used to develop the models using a human-centered lens and found that only 9 papers (15.7%) investigated model fairness and bias. We uncovered tensions between explainability and ecological validity wherein predictive risk models (53.4%) focused on reductive explainability while resource allocation models (25.9%) were dependent on unrealistic assumptions and simulated data that are not useful in practice.     Multilingual sentiment analysis in social media.

    252 p.This thesis addresses the task of analysing sentiment in messages coming from social media. The ultimate goal was to develop a Sentiment Analysis system for Basque. However, because of the socio-linguistic reality of the Basque language a tool providing only analysis for Basque would not be enough for a real world application. Thus, we set out to develop a multilingual system, including Basque, English, French and Spanish.The thesis addresses the following challenges to build such a system:- Analysing methods for creating Sentiment lexicons, suitable for less resourced languages.- Analysis of social media (specifically Twitter): Tweets pose several challenges in order to understand and extract opinions from such messages. Language identification and microtext normalization are addressed.- Research the state of the art in polarity classification, and develop a supervised classifier that is tested against well known social media benchmarks.- Develop a social media monitor capable of analysing sentiment with respect to specific events, products or organizations

    Semantic approaches to domain template construction and opinion mining from natural language

    Most of the text mining algorithms in use today are based on lexical representation of input texts, for example bag of words. A possible alternative is to first convert text into a semantic representation, one that captures the text content in a structured way and using only a set of pre-agreed labels. This thesis explores the feasibility of such an approach to two tasks on collections of documents: identifying common structure in input documents (»domain template construction«), and helping users find differing opinions in input documents (»opinion mining«). We first discuss ways of converting natural text to a semantic representation. We propose and compare two new methods with varying degrees of target representation complexity. The first method, showing more promise, is based on dependency parser output which it converts to lightweight semantic frames, with role fillers aligned to WordNet. The second method structures text using Semantic Role Labeling techniques and aligns the output to the Cyc ontology.\ud Based on the first of the above representations, we next propose and evaluate two methods for constructing frame-based templates for documents from a given domain (e.g. bombing attack news reports). A template is the set of all salient attributes (e.g. attacker, number of casualties, \ldots). The idea of both methods is to construct abstract frames for which more specific instances (according to the WordNet hierarchy) can be found in the input documents. Fragments of these abstract frames represent the sought-for attributes. We achieve state of the art performance and additionally provide detailed type constraints for the attributes, something not possible with competing methods. Finally, we propose a software system for exposing differing opinions in the news. For any given event, we present the user with all known articles on the topic and let them navigate them by three semantic properties simultaneously: sentiment, topical focus and geography of origin. The result is a dynamically reranked set of relevant articles and a near real time focused summary of those articles. The summary, too, is computed from the semantic text representation discussed above. We conducted a user study of the whole system with very positive results

Global transport systems are significant sources of air, land, and water emissions. A key motivator for this Special Issue was the diversity and complexity of mitigating transport emissions and industry adaptions towards increasingly stricter regulation. Originally, the Special Issue called for papers devoted to all forms of mobility and transports. The papers published in this Special Issue cover a wide range of topics, aiming to increase understanding of the impacts and effects of mobility and transport in working towards sustainability, where most studies place technological innovations at the heart of the matter. The goal of the Special Issue is to present research that focuses, on the one hand, on the challenges and obstacles on a system-level decision making of clean mobility, and on the other, on indirect effects caused by these changes

    Robust part-of-speech tagging of social media text

    Part-of-Speech (PoS) tagging (Wortklassenerkennung) ist ein wichtiger Verarbeitungsschritt in vielen sprachverarbeitenden Anwendungen. Heute gibt es daher viele PoS Tagger, die diese wichtige Aufgabe automatisiert erledigen. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass PoS tagging auf informellen Texten oft nur mit unzureichender Genauigkeit möglich ist. Insbesondere Texte aus sozialen Medien sind eine große Herausforderung. Die erhöhte Fehlerrate, welche auf mangelnde Robustheit zurückgeführt werden kann, hat schwere Folgen für Anwendungen die auf PoS Informationen angewiesen sind. Diese Arbeit untersucht daher Tagger-Robustheit unter den drei Gesichtspunkten der (i) Domänenrobustheit, (ii) Sprachrobustheit und (iii) Robustheit gegenüber seltenen linguistischen Phänomene. Für (i) beginnen wir mit einer Analyse der Phänomene, die in informellen Texten häufig anzutreffen sind, aber in formalen Texten nur selten bis gar keine Verwendung finden. Damit schaffen wir einen Überblick über die Art der Phänomene die das Tagging von informellen Texten so schwierig machen. Wir evaluieren viele der üblicherweise benutzen Tagger für die englische und deutsche Sprache auf Texten aus verschiedenen Domänen, um einen umfassenden Überblick über die derzeitige Robustheit der verfügbaren Tagger zu bieten. Die Untersuchung ergab im Wesentlichen, dass alle Tagger auf informellen Texten große Schwächen zeigen. Methoden, um die Robustheit für domänenübergreifendes Tagging zu verbessern, sind prinzipiell hilfreich, lösen aber das grundlegende Robustheitsproblem nicht. Als neuen Lösungsansatz stellen wir Tagging in zwei Schritten vor, welches eine erhöhte Robustheit gegenüber domänenübergreifenden Tagging bietet. Im ersten Schritt wird nur grob-granular getaggt und im zweiten Schritt wird dieses Tagging dann auf das fein-granulare Level verfeinert. Für (ii) untersuchen wir Sprachrobustheit und ob jede Sprache einen zugeschnittenen Tagger benötigt, oder ob es möglich ist einen sprach-unabhängigen Tagger zu konstruieren, der für mehrere Sprachen funktioniert. Dazu vergleichen wir Tagger basierend auf verschiedenen Algorithmen auf 21 Sprachen und analysieren die notwendigen technischen Eigenschaften für einen Tagger, der auf mehreren Sprachen akkurate Modelle lernen kann. Die Untersuchung ergibt, dass Sprachrobustheit an für sich kein schwerwiegendes Problem ist und, dass die Tagsetgröße des Trainingskorpus ein wesentlich stärkerer Einflussfaktor für die Eignung eines Taggers ist als die Zugehörigkeit zu einer gewissen Sprache. Bezüglich (iii) untersuchen wir, wie man mit seltenen Phänomenen umgehen kann, für die nicht genug Trainingsdaten verfügbar sind. Dazu stellen wir eine neue kostengünstige Methode vor, die nur einen minimalen Aufwand an manueller Annotation erwartet, um zusätzliche Daten für solche seltenen Phänomene zu produzieren. Ein Feldversuch hat gezeigt, dass die produzierten Daten ausreichen um das Tagging von seltenen Phänomenen deutlich zu verbessern. Abschließend präsentieren wir zwei Software-Werkzeuge, FlexTag und DeepTC, die wir im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelt haben. Diese Werkzeuge bieten die notwendige Flexibilität und Reproduzierbarkeit für die Experimente in dieser Arbeit.Part-of-speech (PoS) taggers are an important processing component in many Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications, which led to a variety of taggers for tackling this task. Recent work in this field showed that tagging accuracy on informal text domains is poor in comparison to formal text domains. In particular, social media text, which is inherently different from formal standard text, leads to a drastically increased error rate. These arising challenges originate in a lack of robustness of taggers towards domain transfers. This increased error rate has an impact on NLP applications that depend on PoS information. The main contribution of this thesis is the exploration of the concept of robustness under the following three aspects: (i) domain robustness, (ii) language robustness and (iii) long tail robustness. Regarding (i), we start with an analysis of the phenomena found in informal text that make tagging this kind of text challenging. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive robustness comparison of many commonly used taggers for English and German by evaluating them on the text of several text domains. We find that the tagging of informal text is poorly supported by available taggers. A review and analysis of currently used methods to adapt taggers to informal text showed that these methods improve tagging accuracy but offer no satisfactory solution. We propose an alternative tagging approach that reaches an increased multi-domain tagging robustness. This approach is based on tagging in two steps. The first step tags on a coarse-grained level and the second step refines the tags to the fine-grained tags. Regarding (ii), we investigate whether each language requires a language-tailored PoS tagger or if the construction of a competitive language independent tagger is feasible. We explore the technical details that contribute to a tagger's language robustness by comparing taggers based on different algorithms to learn models of 21 languages. We find that language robustness is a less severe issue and that the impact of the tagger choice depends more on the granularity of the tagset that shall be learned than on the language. Regarding (iii), we investigate methods to improve tagging of infrequent phenomena of which no sufficient amount of annotated training data is available, which is a common challenge in the social media domain. We propose a new method to overcome this lack of data that offers an inexpensive way of producing more training data. In a field study, we show that the quality of the produced data suffices to train tagger models that can recognize these under-represented phenomena. Furthermore, we present two software tools, FlexTag and DeepTC, which we developed in the course of this thesis. These tools provide the necessary flexibility for conducting all the experiments in this thesis and ensure their reproducibility

    Detection and Evaluation of Clusters within Sequential Data

    Motivated by theoretical advancements in dimensionality reduction techniques we use a recent model, called Block Markov Chains, to conduct a practical study of clustering in real-world sequential data. Clustering algorithms for Block Markov Chains possess theoretical optimality guarantees and can be deployed in sparse data regimes. Despite these favorable theoretical properties, a thorough evaluation of these algorithms in realistic settings has been lacking. We address this issue and investigate the suitability of these clustering algorithms in exploratory data analysis of real-world sequential data. In particular, our sequential data is derived from human DNA, written text, animal movement data and financial markets. In order to evaluate the determined clusters, and the associated Block Markov Chain model, we further develop a set of evaluation tools. These tools include benchmarking, spectral noise analysis and statistical model selection tools. An efficient implementation of the clustering algorithm and the new evaluation tools is made available together with this paper. Practical challenges associated to real-world data are encountered and discussed. It is ultimately found that the Block Markov Chain model assumption, together with the tools developed here, can indeed produce meaningful insights in exploratory data analyses despite the complexity and sparsity of real-world data.Comment: 37 pages, 12 figure
