All of the documentation was related to remote sensing sensors or the remote sensing of the natural resources.     Geographic information system (GIS) integration of geological, geochemical and geophysical data from the Aggeneys base metal province, South Africa

    Geographic Information System (GIS) technology aids in storage, manipulation, processing, analysis and presentation of spatial data sets. GIS can effectively interrogate large multidisciplinary exploration data sets in the search for new mineral exploitation targets. A spatial database, the AGGeneys Exploration Database (AGGED), has been created, comprising exploration data gathered during two decades of exploration for base-metals in the Aggeneys area, Bushmanland, South Africa. AGGED includes data extracted from analog maps, as well as digital remotely sensed sources, stored in vector and raster data structures, respectively. Vector data includes field based observations such as the extent of outcropping geological units, litho- and chrono-stratigraphic data; structural data; laboratory data based on regional geochemical stream sediment and traverse sampling; cadastral data and known mineral occurrences. Raster data includes Landsat satellite TM imagery and airborne magnetic data. Spatial variation within single data maps are examined. Spatial correlation between three different data maps are facilitated using colour analysis of hue, saturation and value components in a perceptual colour model. Simultaneously combining lead and zinc data with Landsat TM and geophysical magnetic data spatially delineates four new "geoscience" anomalies in the area under investigation. Two distinctive anomalies occur on the farms Aroams and Aggeneys. The Aroams anomaly (GSAl) has not been previously recognised, whereas the Aggeneys anomaly (GSA2) has been located before. The two other "geoscience" anomalies, on the farm Haramoep (GSA3 and GSA4 ), are slightly less distinct. Overlaying fold axial trace patterns and anomalies on the farm Haramoep, indicate that F2 and F3 fold structures are closely associated with these two anomalies. The location of the Aroams anomaly occurs along the same east-west trend of the four known major ore-deposits viz. Big Syncline, Broken Hill, Black Mountain and Gamsberg. Extrapolating F2 and F3 fold patterns using magnetic data locates this Aroams anomaly along the F3 axial trace extending from Big Syncline through to Gamsberg. The elevated Pb-Zn geochemical anomaly and structural data associated with the Aroams anomaly makes it a promising future exploitation target. The AGGED database can be expanded both in geographic extent to include surrounding areas, and to allow for inclusion of future surveys. Analytical processing of data in AGGED can also be continued and expanded. GIS is a burgeoning field and developments in GIS technology will impact on the explorationist. Developments in object-oriented and knowledge-based database technologies, visualisation techniques and artificial intelligence, incorporated in future GIS need to be closely monitored and evaluated by geoscience explorationists

    Signal detection in the auditory midbrain : neural correlated and mechanisms of spatial release from masking

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Normal-hearing listeners have a remarkable ability to hear in noisy environments, while hearing-impaired listeners and automatic speech-recognition systems often have difficulty in noise. With the ultimate goal of improving hearing aids and speech-recognition systems, we study the neural mechanisms involved in one aspect of noisy-environment listening, "spatial release from masking," which is the observation that a signal is more easily detected when its source is spatially separated from a masking-noise source. We use neurophysiology, computational modeling, and psychoacoustics to investigate the neural mechanisms of spatial release from masking, and we focus on low frequencies, which are important for speech recognition and are often spared in hearing-impaired listeners. Previous studies suggest that at low frequencies, listeners use interaural time differences (ITDs) to improve signal detection when signals and maskers are spatially separated in azimuth. To determine how individual neurons respond to spatially separated signals and maskers, we record in anesthetized cats from low-frequency, ITD-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC), a major center of converging auditory pathways in the midbrain. We develop a computational model of the neuron responses, which incorporates both interaural cross-correlation (as used in existing binaural models) and amplitude-modulation sensitivity. The need for modulation sensitivity to predict the neural responses indicates that binaural and temporal processing are interacting in signal detection, rather than acting independently as is often assumed. This modification is especially important because most natural sounds, including speech, have pronounced envelope fluctuations that(cont.) previous models of binaural detection have not utilized. To relate these neurophysiological results to human behavioral thresholds, we define population thresholds based on the most sensitive neurons in the population. The neural population thresholds are similar to human behavioral thresholds, indicating that low-frequency, ITD-sensitive neurons in the IC may be necessary for low-frequency spatial release from masking in humans. Both interaural correlation and modulation sensitivity seem to be required for the model population thresholds to predict human behavioral thresholds. Overall, our findings suggest that considering the auditory system's modulation sensitivity and interaural cross-correlation in the design of hearing aids and speech-recognition systems may improve these devices' performance in noise.by Courtney C.     Automated Detection of Electric Energy Consumption Load Profile Patterns

    [EN] Load profiles of energy consumption from smart meters are becoming more and more available, and the amount of data to analyse is huge. In order to automate this analysis, the application of state-of-the-art data mining techniques for time series analysis is reviewed. In particular, the use of dynamic clustering techniques to obtain and visualise temporal patterns characterising the users of electrical energy is deeply studied. The performed review can be used as a guide for those interested in the automatic analysis and groups of behaviour detection within load profile databases. Additionally, a selection of dynamic clustering algorithms have been implemented and the performances compared using an available electric energy consumption load profile database.
