    The Essential Role and the Continuous Evolution of Modulation Techniques for Voltage-Source Inverters in the Past, Present, and Future Power Electronics

    The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods. This paper aims to concentrate and discuss the latest developments on this exciting technology, to provide insight on where the state-of-the-art stands today, and analyze the trends and challenges driving its future

    Experimental validation of a reduced-scale rail power conditioner based on modular multilevel converter for AC railway power grids

    Rail power conditioner (RPC) has the ability to improve the power quality in AC railway power grids. This power conditioner can increase the loading capacity of traction substations, balance the active power between the feeder load sections, and compensate for reactive power and current harmonics. At present, there is increasing use of multilevel converter topologies, which provide scalability and robust performance under different conditions. In this framework, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is emerging as a prominent solution for medium-voltage applications. Serving that purpose, this paper focuses on the implementation, testing, and validation of a reduced-scale laboratory prototype of a proposed RPC based on an MMC. The developed laboratory prototype, designed to be compact, reliable, and adaptable to multipurpose applications, is presented, highlighting the main control and power circuit boards of the MMC. In addition, MMC parameter design of the filter inductor and submodule capacitor is also explained. Experimental analysis and validation of a reduced-scale prototype RPC based on MMC topology, are provided to verify the power quality improvement in electrified railway power grids. Thus, two experimental case studies are presented: (1) when both of the load sections are unequally loaded; (2) when only one load section is loaded.     Contributions to Modulation and Control Algorithms for Multilevel Converters

    Las actuales tendencias de la red eléctrica han lanzado a la industria a la búsqueda de sistemas de generación, distribución y consumo de energía eléctrica más eficientes. Generación distribuida, reducción de componentes pasivos, líneas DC de alta tensión son, entre otras, las posibles líneas de investigación que están actualmente siendo consideradas como el futuro de la red eléctrica. Sin embargo, nada de esto sería posible si no fuera por los avances alcanzados en el campo de la electrónica de potencia. El trabajo aquí presentado comienza con una breve introducción a la electrónica de potencia, concretamente a los convertidores de potencia conectados a red, sus estrategias de control más comunes y enfoques ante redes desbalanceadas. A continuación, las contribuciones del autor sobre el control y modulación de una topología particular de convertidores, conocidos como convertidores multinivel, se presentan como el principal contenido de este trabajo. Este tipo de convertidores mejoran la eficiencia y ciertas prestaciones, en comparación con convertidores más tradicionales, a costa de una mayor complejidad en el control al incrementar la cantidad de los componentes hardware. A pesar de que existen numerosas topologías de convertidores multinivel y algunas de ellas son brevemente expuestas en este trabajo, la mayoría de las aportaciones están enfocadas para convertidores del tipo diode-clamped converter. Adicionalmente, se incluye una aportación para convertidores del tipo multinivel modular, y otra para convertidores en cascada. Se espera que el contenido de la introducción de este trabajo, junto a las contribuciones particulares para convertidores multinivel sirva de inspiración para futuros investigadores del campo

    FOPID Controlled Shunt Active Filter in IEEE Thirty Bus System with Improved Dynamic Time Response

    This paper aims on improving the dynamic time response of a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) connected to IEEE Thirty Bus System(TBS) using Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) in closed loop controlled Active Power Filter with FOPID. The simulation results are presented to find the effect of shunt active filter using FOPID controller. Open Loop Thirty Bus System (OLTBS) with change in load is simulated. The simulation results with PI and FOPID Controller based SAF are compared and the corresponding time-domain parameters are presented. The results indicate that FOPID Controller system has better response than PI controlled system

    Enhanced controller for grid-connected modular multilevel converters in distorted utility grids

    This paper is about the control of Modular multilevel converters, an innovative technology in the design of converters, which is beginning to be included in real installations. Papers about this topic include simulation models, circulating current reduction, voltage modulators, capacitor voltage balancing and control issues. The scheme for current source regulation used in this article includes all control loops, which are, from the outermost to innermost, DC bus voltage regulator, current regulator, voltage modulator, capacitor voltage balancing, and a PLL for the synchronization to the grid. Disposition-sinusoidal pulse width modulation is used as the voltage modulator, and an enhanced control strategy in the stationary reference frame for 3-phase MMCs is used for the inner current control loops. Very detailed simulations of the complete control system have been performed for both the enhanced control strategy in the stationary reference frame, and the well-known control in the synchronous reference frame, as well as some experiments using the hardware-in-the-loop simulation technique. The validation of these control strategies is made by a comparison of the capability of each one to compensate the harmonic distortions of the utility grid according to the grid code.     Power electronics technology is still an emerging technology, and it has found its way into many applications, from renewable energy generation (i.e., wind power and solar power) to electrical vehicles (EVs), biomedical devices, and small appliances, such as laptop chargers. In the near future, electrical energy will be provided and handled by power electronics and consumed through power electronics; this not only will intensify the role of power electronics technology in power conversion processes, but also implies that power systems are undergoing a paradigm shift, from centralized distribution to distributed generation. Today, more than 1000 GW of renewable energy generation sources (photovoltaic (PV) and wind) have been installed, all of which are handled by power electronics technology.     State Space Modelling and Control of the Modular Multilevel Converter

    In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein neuer Ansatz zur Modellierung von Systemen basierend auf dem Modularen Multilevel Umrichter (MMC) vorgestellt. Mit Hilfe dieses Ansatzes ist es möglich, neue, effiziente Regelungsalgorithmen für das System zu entwerfen. In Zukunft wird es für netzeinspeisende Umrichter immer wichtiger, nicht nur stabil, sondern auch netzverträglich operieren zu können. Ausgehend von analytischen Differentialgleichungen wird ein Zustandsraummodell des MMC abgeleitet und eine Methode zur Entkopplung des Systems abgeleitet. Mathematische Werkzeuge erlauben eine systematische Analyse der auftretenden Steuer- und Ausgangsgrößen. Eine einfache Matrixdiagonalisierung erlaubt eine allgemeine Transformationsregel für MMC-basierte System zu formulieren. Daraus resultieren einfache Möglichkeiten, Leistungsterme zu identifizieren, die die Zweigenergien des Systems im erlaubten Betriebsbereich halten können. Zusätzlich werden Freiheitsgrade der Kreisströme und der Nullspannung formuliert. Wie für MMC-basierte Topologien erwartet, können sie zur Reduzierung der Energiepulsationen der Zweige eingesetzt werden. Mit der vorgestellten Modellbeschreibung ist es möglich, neue Optimierungsverfahren unter Einbeziehung aller Freiheitsgrade durchzuführen, die eine Reduzierung der Energiepulsationen ermöglichen

    Cost-Effective Model Predictive Control Techniques for Modular Multilevel Converters

    In this thesis, model predictive control (MPC) techniques are investigated with their applications to modular multilevel converters (MMCs). Since normally a large number of submodule (SM) capacitor voltages and gate signals need to be handled in an MMC, the MPC schemes studied in this thesis are employed for determining only the voltage levels of converter arms, while gate signals are subsequently generated by the conventional sorting method. Emphasis is given to inner-loop current control in terms of phase current and circulating current, aiming at performance enhancement and computation reduction. A variable rounding level control (VRLC) approach is developed in this thesis, which is based on a modification of the conventional nearest level control (NLC) scheme: instead of the conventional nearest integer function, a proper rounding function is selected for each arm of the MMC employing the MPC method. As a result, the simplicity of the NLC is maintained while the current regulating ability is improved. The VRLC technique can also be generalized from an MPC perspective. Different current controllers can be considered to generate the arm voltage references as input of the VRLC block, thus refining the control sets of the MPC. Based on the decoupled current models, the accumulated effect of SM capacitor voltage ripples is investigated, revealing that the VRLC strategy may not achieve a proper performance if the accumulated ripple is nontrivial compared to the voltage per level. Two indexes are also proposed for quantifying the current controllability of the VRLC. Benefiting from this analysis, A SM-grouping solution is put forward to apply such MPC techniques to an MMC with a large number of SMs, leading to an equivalent operation of an MMC with much reduced number of SMs, which significantly increases the current regulating capability with reduced complexity. As an example, the SM-grouping VRLC proposal is analyzed and its system design principles are described. This thesis also develops another MPC technique which directly optimizes the cost function using quadratic programming technique. Both a rigorous and a simplified procedure are provided to solve the optimization problem. Compared with the conventional finite control set (FCS)-MPC method which evaluates all voltage level combinations, the proposed scheme presents apparent advantage in terms of calculation cost while achieving similar performance
