    VIDEO PREPROCESSING BASED ON HUMAN PERCEPTION FOR TELESURGERY

    Video transmission plays a critical role in robotic telesurgery because of the high bandwidth and high quality requirement. The goal of this dissertation is to find a preprocessing method based on human visual perception for telesurgical video, so that when preprocessed image sequences are passed to the video encoder, the bandwidth can be reallocated from non-essential surrounding regions to the region of interest, ensuring excellent image quality of critical regions (e.g. surgical region). It can also be considered as a quality control scheme that will gracefully degrade the video quality in the presence of network congestion. The proposed preprocessing method can be separated into two major parts. First, we propose a time-varying attention map whose value is highest at the gazing point and falls off progressively towards the periphery. Second, we propose adaptive spatial filtering and the parameters of which are adjusted according to the attention map. By adding visual adaptation to the spatial filtering, telesurgical video data can be compressed efficiently because of the high degree of visual redundancy removal by our algorithm. Our experimental results have shown that with the proposed preprocessing method, over half of the bandwidth can be reduced while there is no significant visual effect for the observer. We have also developed an optimal parameter selecting algorithm, so that when the network bandwidth is limited, the overall visual distortion after preprocessing is minimized

    Prioritizing Content of Interest in Multimedia Data Compression

    Image and video compression techniques make data transmission and storage in digital multimedia systems more efficient and feasible for the system's limited storage and bandwidth. Many generic image and video compression techniques such as JPEG and H.264/AVC have been standardized and are now widely adopted. Despite their great success, we observe that these standard compression techniques are not the best solution for data compression in special types of multimedia systems such as microscopy videos and low-power wireless broadcast systems. In these application-specific systems where the content of interest in the multimedia data is known and well-defined, we should re-think the design of a data compression pipeline. We hypothesize that by identifying and prioritizing multimedia data's content of interest, new compression methods can be invented that are far more effective than standard techniques. In this dissertation, a set of new data compression methods based on the idea of prioritizing the content of interest has been proposed for three different kinds of multimedia systems. I will show that the key to designing efficient compression techniques in these three cases is to prioritize the content of interest in the data. The definition of the content of interest of multimedia data depends on the application. First, I show that for microscopy videos, the content of interest is defined as the spatial regions in the video frame with pixels that don't only contain noise. Keeping data in those regions with high quality and throwing out other information yields to a novel microscopy video compression technique. Second, I show that for a Bluetooth low energy beacon based system, practical multimedia data storage and transmission is possible by prioritizing content of interest. I designed custom image compression techniques that preserve edges in a binary image, or foreground regions of a color image of indoor or outdoor objects. Last, I present a new indoor Bluetooth low energy beacon based augmented reality system that integrates a 3D moving object compression method that prioritizes the content of interest.Doctor of Philosoph

    Centralized and distributed semi-parametric compression of piecewise smooth functions

    This thesis introduces novel wavelet-based semi-parametric centralized and distributed compression methods for a class of piecewise smooth functions. Our proposed compression schemes are based on a non-conventional transform coding structure with simple independent encoders and a complex joint decoder. Current centralized state-of-the-art compression schemes are based on the conventional structure where an encoder is relatively complex and nonlinear. In addition, the setting usually allows the encoder to observe the entire source. Recently, there has been an increasing need for compression schemes where the encoder is lower in complexity and, instead, the decoder has to handle more computationally intensive tasks. Furthermore, the setup may involve multiple encoders, where each one can only partially observe the source. Such scenario is often referred to as distributed source coding. In the first part, we focus on the dual situation of the centralized compression where the encoder is linear and the decoder is nonlinear. Our analysis is centered around a class of 1-D piecewise smooth functions. We show that, by incorporating parametric estimation into the decoding procedure, it is possible to achieve the same distortion- rate performance as that of a conventional wavelet-based compression scheme. We also present a new constructive approach to parametric estimation based on the sampling results of signals with finite rate of innovation. The second part of the thesis focuses on the distributed compression scenario, where each independent encoder partially observes the 1-D piecewise smooth function. We propose a new wavelet-based distributed compression scheme that uses parametric estimation to perform joint decoding. Our distortion-rate analysis shows that it is possible for the proposed scheme to achieve that same compression performance as that of a joint encoding scheme. Lastly, we apply the proposed theoretical framework in the context of distributed image and video compression. We start by considering a simplified model of the video signal and show that we can achieve distortion-rate performance close to that of a joint encoding scheme. We then present practical compression schemes for real world signals. Our simulations confirm the improvement in performance over classical schemes, both in terms of the PSNR and the visual quality

    Utilizing Reinforcement Learning and Computer Vision in a Pick-And-Place Operation for Sorting Objects in Motion

    This master's thesis studies the implementation of advanced machine learning (ML) techniques in industrial automation systems, focusing on applying machine learning to enable and evolve autonomous sorting capabilities in robotic manipulators. In particular, Inverse Kinematics (IK) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) are investigated as methods for controlling a UR10e robotic arm for pick-and-place of moving objects on a conveyor belt within a small-scale sorting facility. A camera-based computer vision system applying YOLOv8 is used for real-time object detection and instance segmentation. Perception data is utilized to ascertain optimal grip points, specifically through an implemented algorithm that outputs optimal grip position, angle, and width. As the implemented system includes testing and evaluation on a physical system, the intricacies of hardware control, specifically the reverse engineering of an OnRobot RG6 gripper is elaborated as part of this study. The system is implemented on the Robotic Operating System (ROS), and its design is in particular driven by high modularity and scalability in mind. The camera-based vision system serves as the primary input, while the robot control is the output. The implemented system design allows for the evaluation of motion control employing both IK and RL. Computation of IK is conducted via MoveIt2, while the RL model is trained and computed in NVIDIA Isaac Sim. The high-level control of the robotic manipulator was accomplished with use of Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). The main result of the research is a novel reward function for the pick-and-place operation that takes into account distance and orientation from the target object. In addition, the provided system administers task control by independently initializing pick-and-place operation phases for each environment. The findings demonstrate that PPO was able to significantly enhance the velocity, accuracy, and adaptability of industrial automation. Our research shows that accurate control of the robot arm can be reached by training the PPO Model purely by applying a digital twin simulation

    Life below water is the 14th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) envisaged by the United Nations and is aimed at conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. It is not difficult to argue that signals and image technologies may play an essential role in achieving the foreseen targets linked to SDG 14. Besides increasing the general knowledge of ocean health by means of data analysis, methodologies based on signal and image processing can be helpful in environmental monitoring, in protecting and restoring ecosystems, in finding new sensor technologies for green routing and eco-friendly ships, in providing tools for implementing best practices for sustainable fishing, as well as in defining frameworks and intelligent systems for enforcing sea law and making the sea a safer and more secure place. Imaging is also a key element for the exploration of the underwater world for various scopes, ranging from the predictive maintenance of sub-sea pipelines and other infrastructure projects, to the discovery, documentation, and protection of sunken cultural heritage. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses investigations into techniques and ICT approaches and, in particular, the study and application of signal- and image-based methods and, in turn, exploration of the advantages of their application in the previously mentioned areas

    Large-scale interactive exploratory visual search

    Large scale visual search has been one of the challenging issues in the era of big data. It demands techniques that are not only highly effective and efficient but also allow users conveniently express their information needs and refine their intents. In this thesis, we focus on developing an exploratory framework for large scale visual search. We also develop a number of enabling techniques in this thesis, including compact visual content representation for scalable search, near duplicate video shot detection, and action based event detection. We propose a novel scheme for extremely low bit rate visual search, which sends compressed visual words consisting of vocabulary tree histogram and descriptor orientations rather than descriptors. Compact representation of video data is achieved through identifying keyframes of a video which can also help users comprehend visual content efficiently. We propose a novel Bag-of-Importance model for static video summarization. Near duplicate detection is one of the key issues for large scale visual search, since there exist a large number nearly identical images and videos. We propose an improved near-duplicate video shot detection approach for more effective shot representation. Event detection has been one of the solutions for bridging the semantic gap in visual search. We particular focus on human action centred event detection. We propose an enhanced sparse coding scheme to model human actions. Our proposed approach is able to significantly reduce computational cost while achieving recognition accuracy highly comparable to the state-of-the-art methods. At last, we propose an integrated solution for addressing the prime challenges raised from large-scale interactive visual search. The proposed system is also one of the first attempts for exploratory visual search. It provides users more robust results to satisfy their exploring experiences

    High throughput image compression and decompression on GPUs

    Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Entwicklung eines GPU-freundlichen, intra-only, Wavelet-basierten Videokompressionsverfahrens mit hohem Durchsatz, das für visuell verlustfreie Anwendungen optimiert ist. Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass der JPEG 2000 Entropie-Kodierer ein Flaschenhals ist, werden verschiedene algorithmische Änderungen vorgeschlagen und bewertet. Zunächst wird der JPEG 2000 Selective Arithmetic Coding Mode auf der GPU realisiert, wobei sich die Erhöhung des Durchsatzes hierdurch als begrenzt zeigt. Stattdessen werden zwei nicht standard-kompatible Änderungen vorgeschlagen, die (1) jede Bitebebene in nur einem einzelnen Pass verarbeiten (Single-Pass-Modus) und (2) einen echten Rohcodierungsmodus einführen, der sample-weise parallelisierbar ist und keine aufwendige Kontextmodellierung erfordert. Als nächstes wird ein alternativer Entropiekodierer aus der Literatur, der Bitplane Coder with Parallel Coefficient Processing (BPC-PaCo), evaluiert. Er gibt Signaladaptivität zu Gunsten von höherer Parallelität auf und daher wird hier untersucht und gezeigt, dass ein aus verschiedensten Testsequenzen gemitteltes statisches Wahrscheinlichkeitsmodell eine kompetitive Kompressionseffizienz erreicht. Es wird zudem eine Kombination von BPC-PaCo mit dem Single-Pass-Modus vorgeschlagen, der den Speedup gegenüber dem JPEG 2000 Entropiekodierer von 2,15x (BPC-PaCo mit zwei Pässen) auf 2,6x (BPC-PaCo mit Single-Pass-Modus) erhöht auf Kosten eines um 0,3 dB auf 1,0 dB erhöhten Spitzen-Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis (PSNR). Weiter wird ein paralleler Algorithmus zur Post-Compression Ratenkontrolle vorgestellt sowie eine parallele Codestream-Erstellung auf der GPU. Es wird weiterhin ein theoretisches Laufzeitmodell formuliert, das es durch Benchmarking von einer GPU ermöglicht die Laufzeit einer Routine auf einer anderen GPU vorherzusagen. Schließlich wird der erste JPEG XS GPU Decoder vorgestellt und evaluiert. JPEG XS wurde als Low Complexity Codec konzipiert und forderte erstmals explizit GPU-Freundlichkeit bereits im Call for Proposals. Ab Bitraten über 1 bpp ist der Decoder etwa 2x schneller im Vergleich zu JPEG 2000 und 1,5x schneller als der schnellste hier vorgestellte Entropiekodierer (BPC-PaCo mit Single-Pass-Modus). Mit einer GeForce GTX 1080 wird ein Decoder Durchsatz von rund 200 fps für eine UHD-4:4:4-Sequenz erreicht.This work investigates possibilities to create a high throughput, GPU-friendly, intra-only, Wavelet-based video compression algorithm optimized for visually lossless applications. Addressing the key observation that JPEG 2000’s entropy coder is a bottleneck and might be overly complex for a high bit rate scenario, various algorithmic alterations are proposed. First, JPEG 2000’s Selective Arithmetic Coding mode is realized on the GPU, but the gains in terms of an increased throughput are shown to be limited. Instead, two independent alterations not compliant to the standard are proposed, that (1) give up the concept of intra-bit plane truncation points and (2) introduce a true raw-coding mode that is fully parallelizable and does not require any context modeling. Next, an alternative block coder from the literature, the Bitplane Coder with Parallel Coefficient Processing (BPC-PaCo), is evaluated. Since it trades signal adaptiveness for increased parallelism, it is shown here how a stationary probability model averaged from a set of test sequences yields competitive compression efficiency. A combination of BPC-PaCo with the single-pass mode is proposed and shown to increase the speedup with respect to the original JPEG 2000 entropy coder from 2.15x (BPC-PaCo with two passes) to 2.6x (proposed BPC-PaCo with single-pass mode) at the marginal cost of increasing the PSNR penalty by 0.3 dB to at most 1 dB. Furthermore, a parallel algorithm is presented that determines the optimal code block bit stream truncation points (given an available bit rate budget) and builds the entire code stream on the GPU, reducing the amount of data that has to be transferred back into host memory to a minimum. A theoretical runtime model is formulated that allows, based on benchmarking results on one GPU, to predict the runtime of a kernel on another GPU. Lastly, the first ever JPEG XS GPU-decoder realization is presented. JPEG XS was designed to be a low complexity codec and for the first time explicitly demanded GPU-friendliness already in the call for proposals. Starting at bit rates above 1 bpp, the decoder is around 2x faster compared to the original JPEG 2000 and 1.5x faster compared to JPEG 2000 with the fastest evaluated entropy coder (BPC-PaCo with single-pass mode). With a GeForce GTX 1080, a decoding throughput of around 200 fps is achieved for a UHD 4:4:4 sequence

    Autocalibrating vision guided navigation of unmanned air vehicles via tactical monocular cameras in GPS denied environments

    This thesis presents a novel robotic navigation strategy by using a conventional tactical monocular camera, proving the feasibility of using a monocular camera as the sole proximity sensing, object avoidance, mapping, and path-planning mechanism to fly and navigate small to medium scale unmanned rotary-wing aircraft in an autonomous manner. The range measurement strategy is scalable, self-calibrating, indoor-outdoor capable, and has been biologically inspired by the key adaptive mechanisms for depth perception and pattern recognition found in humans and intelligent animals (particularly bats), designed to assume operations in previously unknown, GPS-denied environments. It proposes novel electronics, aircraft, aircraft systems, systems, and procedures and algorithms that come together to form airborne systems which measure absolute ranges from a monocular camera via passive photometry, mimicking that of a human-pilot like judgement. The research is intended to bridge the gap between practical GPS coverage and precision localization and mapping problem in a small aircraft. In the context of this study, several robotic platforms, airborne and ground alike, have been developed, some of which have been integrated in real-life field trials, for experimental validation. Albeit the emphasis on miniature robotic aircraft this research has been tested and found compatible with tactical vests and helmets, and it can be used to augment the reliability of many other types of proximity sensors
