    Multilevel Solvers for Unstructured Surface Meshes

    Parameterization of unstructured surface meshes is of fundamental importance in many applications of digital geometry processing. Such parameterization approaches give rise to large and exceedingly ill-conditioned systems which are difficult or impossible to solve without the use of sophisticated multilevel preconditioning strategies. Since the underlying meshes are very fine to begin with, such multilevel preconditioners require mesh coarsening to build an appropriate hierarchy. In this paper we consider several strategies for the construction of hierarchies using ideas from mesh simplification algorithms used in the computer graphics literature. We introduce two novel hierarchy construction schemes and demonstrate their superior performance when used in conjunction with a multigrid preconditioner

    Block-diagonal and constraint preconditioners for nonsymmetric indefinite linear systems : Part I: Theory

    We study block-diagonal preconditioners and an efficient variant of constraint preconditioners for general two-by-two block linear systems with zero (2,2)-block. We derive block-diagonal preconditioners from a splitting of the (1,1)-block of the matrix. From the resulting preconditioned system we derive a smaller, so-called related system that yields the solution of the original problem. Solving the related system corresponds to an efficient implementation of constraint preconditioning. We analyze the properties of both classes of preconditioned matrices, in particular their spectra. Using analytical results, we show that the related system matrix has the more favorable spectrum, which in many applications translates into faster convergence for Krylov subspace methods. We show that fast convergence depends mainly on the quality of the splitting, a topic for which a substantial body of theory exists. Our analysis also provides a number of new relations between block-diagonal preconditioners and constraint preconditioners. For constrained problems, solving the related system produces iterates that satisfy the constraints exactly, just as for systems with a constraint preconditioner. Finally, for the Lagrange multiplier formulation of a constrained optimization problem we show how scaling nonlinear constraints can dramatically improve the convergence for linear systems in a Newton iteration. Our theoretical results are confirmed by numerical experiments on a constrained optimization problem. We consider the general, nonsymmetric, nonsingular case. Our only additional requirement is the nonsingularity of the Schur-complement--type matrix derived from the splitting that defines the preconditioners. In particular, the (1,2)-block need not equal the transposed (2,1)-block, and the (1,1)-block might be indefinite or even singular. This is the first paper in a two-part sequence. In the second paper we will study the use of our preconditioners in a variety of applications

    Preconditioners for Generalized Saddle-Point Problems

    Generalized saddle point problems arise in a number of applications, ranging from optimization and metal deformation to fluid flow and PDE-governed optimal control. We focus our discussion on the most general case, making no assumption of symmetry or definiteness in the matrix or its blocks. As these problems are often large and sparse, preconditioners play a critical role in speeding the convergence of Krylov methods for these problems. We first examine two types of preconditioners for these problems, one block-diagonal and one indefinite, and present analyses of the eigenvalue distributions of the preconditioned matrices. We also investigate the use of approximations for the Schur complement matrix in these preconditioners and develop eigenvalue analysis accordingly. Second, we examine new developments in probing methods, inspired by graph coloring methods for sparse Jacobians, for building approximations to Schur complement matrices. We then present an analysis of these techniques and their accuracy. In addition, we provide a mathematical justification for their use in approximating Schur complements and suggest the use of approximate factorization techniques to decrease the computational cost of applying the inverse of the probed matrix. Finally, we consider the effect of our preconditioners on four applications. Two of these applications come from the realm of fluid flow, one using a finite element discretization and the other using a spectral discretization. The third application involves the stress relaxation of aluminum strips at low stress levels. The final application involves mesh parameterization and flattening. For these applications, we present results illustrating the eigenvalue bounds on our preconditioners and demonstrating the theoretical justification of these methods. We also present convergence and timing results, showing the effectiveness of our methods in practice. Specifically the use of probing methods for approximating the Schur compliment matrices in our preconditioners is empirically justified. We also investigate the hh-dependence of our preconditioners one model fluid problem, and demonstrate empirically that our methods do not suffer from a deterioration in convergence as the problem size increases

    A Finite Element based Deep Learning solver for parametric PDEs

    We introduce a dynamic Deep Learning (DL) architecture based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) to solve linear parametric Partial Differential Equations(PDEs). The connections between neurons in the architecture mimic the Finite Element connectivity graph when applying mesh refinements. We select and discuss several losses employing preconditioners and different norms to enhance convergence. For simplicity, we implement the resulting Deep-FEM in one spatial domain (1D), although its extension to 2D and 3D problems is straightforward. Extensive numerical experiments show in general good approximations for both symmetric positive definite (SPD) and indefinite problems in parametric and non-parametric problems.     Multiscale Methods for Random Composite Materials

    Simulation of material behaviour is not only a vital tool in accelerating product development and increasing design efficiency but also in advancing our fundamental understanding of materials. While homogeneous, isotropic materials are often simple to simulate, advanced, anisotropic materials pose a more sizeable challenge. In simulating entire composite components such as a 25m aircraft wing made by stacking several 0.25mm thick plies, finite element models typically exceed millions or even a billion unknowns. This problem is exacerbated by the inclusion of sub-millimeter manufacturing defects for two reasons. Firstly, a finer resolution is required which makes the problem larger. Secondly, defects introduce randomness. Traditionally, this randomness or uncertainty has been quantified heuristically since commercial codes are largely unsuccessful in solving problems of this size. This thesis develops a rigorous uncertainty quantification (UQ) framework permitted by a state of the art finite element package \texttt{dune-composites}, also developed here, designed for but not limited to composite applications. A key feature of this open-source package is a robust, parallel and scalable preconditioner \texttt{GenEO}, that guarantees constant iteration counts independent of problem size. It boasts near perfect scaling properties in both, a strong and a weak sense on over 15,00015,000 cores. It is numerically verified by solving industrially motivated problems containing upwards of 200 million unknowns. Equipped with the capability of solving expensive models, a novel stochastic framework is developed to quantify variability in part performance arising from localized out-of-plane defects. Theoretical part strength is determined for independent samples drawn from a distribution inferred from B-scans of wrinkles. Supported by literature, the results indicate a strong dependence between maximum misalignment angle and strength knockdown based on which an engineering model is presented to allow rapid estimation of residual strength bypassing expensive simulations. The engineering model itself is built from a large set of simulations of residual strength, each of which is computed using the following two step approach. First, a novel parametric representation of wrinkles is developed where the spread of parameters defines the wrinkle distribution. Second, expensive forward models are only solved for independent wrinkles using \texttt{dune-composites}. Besides scalability the other key feature of \texttt{dune-composites}, the \texttt{GenEO} coarse space, doubles as an excellent multiscale basis which is exploited to build high quality reduced order models that are orders of magnitude smaller. This is important because it enables multiple coarse solves for the cost of one fine solve. In an MCMC framework, where many solves are wasted in arriving at the next independent sample, this is a sought after quality because it greatly increases effective sample size for a fixed computational budget thus providing a route to high-fidelity UQ. This thesis exploits both, new solvers and multiscale methods developed here to design an efficient Bayesian framework to carry out previously intractable (large scale) simulations calibrated by experimental data. These new capabilities provide the basis for future work on modelling random heterogeneous materials while also offering the scope for building virtual test programs including nonlinear analyses, all of which can be implemented within a probabilistic setting
