Review of trends and targets of complex systems for power system optimization
Optimization systems (OSs) allow operators of electrical power systems (PS) to optimally operate PSs and to also create optimal PS development plans. The inclusion of OSs in the PS is a big trend nowadays, and the demand for PS optimization tools and PS-OSs experts is growing. The aim of this review is to define the current dynamics and trends in PS optimization research and to present several papers that clearly and comprehensively describe PS OSs with characteristics corresponding to the identified current main trends in this research area. The current dynamics and trends of the research area were defined on the basis of the results of an analysis of the database of 255 PS-OS-presenting papers published from December 2015 to July 2019. Eleven main characteristics of the current PS OSs were identified. The results of the statistical analyses give four characteristics of PS OSs which are currently the most frequently presented in research papers: OSs for minimizing the price of electricity/OSs reducing PS operation costs, OSs for optimizing the operation of renewable energy sources, OSs for regulating the power consumption during the optimization process, and OSs for regulating the energy storage systems operation during the optimization process. Finally, individual identified characteristics of the current PS OSs are briefly described. In the analysis, all PS OSs presented in the observed time period were analyzed regardless of the part of the PS for which the operation was optimized by the PS OS, the voltage level of the optimized PS part, or the optimization goal of the PS OS.Web of Science135art. no. 107
Battery Degradation Maps for Power System Optimization and as a Benchmark Reference
This paper presents a novel method to describe battery degradation. We use
the concept of degradation maps to model the incremental charge capacity loss
as a function of discrete battery control actions and state of charge. The maps
can be scaled to represent any battery system in size and power. Their convex
piece-wise affine representations allow for tractable optimal control
formulations and can be used in power system simulations to incorporate battery
degradation. The map parameters for different battery technologies are
published making them an useful basis to benchmark different battery
technologies in case studies

Solar-Diesel Hybrid Power System Optimization and Experimental Validation
As of 2008 1.46 billion people, or 22 percent of the World's population, were without electricity . Many of these people live in remote areas where decentralized generation is the only method of electrification. Most mini-grids are powered by diesel generators, but new hybrid power systems are becoming a reliable method to incorporate renewable energy while also reducing total system cost. This thesis quantifies the measurable Operational Costs for an experimental hybrid power system in Sierra Leone. Two software programs, Hybrid2 and HOMER, are used during the system design and subsequent analysis. Experimental data from the installed system is used to validate the two programs and to quantify the savings created by each component within the hybrid system. This thesis bridges the gap between design optimization studies that frequently lack subsequent validation and experimental hybrid system performance studies

Performance assessment of evolutionary algorithms in power system optimization problems
Due to the stochastic nature, there are several concerns on the effectiveness and robustness of evolutionary algorithms when applied to solve different kinds of optimization problems in power systems field. To address this issue, this paper provides a comparative analysis of several evolutionary algorithms based on parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. Numerical examples are based on hydrothermal system operation and transmission pricing optimization problems
Combined Computational Intelligence Approach for the Power System Optimization Problem
This paper presents an adoption of a natural phenomenon as Thunderstorm Algorithm (TA) which is applied to solve a problem of the power production composition under various constraints. This work also introduces artificial salmon tracking algorithm (ASTA) for defining the optimal strategy of the power system on the power consumption. Both algorithms are tested on the IEEE-62 bus system as a selected structure for the mathematical cased model. By considering all parameters, results show that ASTA can be applied to predict the power consumption and TA also has good performances while searching the optimal solution. Moreover, the power production can be presented throughout an economic dispatch problem. Technically, this computation demonstrates the optimal solution with fast convergence and short time consumption. These processes also perform smooth and stable characteristics for the searching completion
