    Development of soft computing and applications in agricultural and biological engineering

    Soft computing is a set of “inexact” computing techniques, which are able to model and analyze very complex problems. For these complex problems, more conventional methods have not been able to produce cost-effective, analytical, or complete solutions. Soft computing has been extensively studied and applied in the last three decades for scientific research and engineering computing. In agricultural and biological engineering, researchers and engineers have developed methods of fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, decision trees, and support vector machines to study soil and water regimes related to crop growth, analyze the operation of food processing, and support decision-making in precision farming. This paper reviews the development of soft computing techniques. With the concepts and methods, applications of soft computing in the field of agricultural and biological engineering are presented, especially in the soil and water context for crop management and decision support in precision agriculture. The future of development and application of soft computing in agricultural and biological engineering is discussed

    Multispectral image analysis in laparoscopy – A machine learning approach to live perfusion monitoring

    Modern visceral surgery is often performed through small incisions. Compared to open surgery, these minimally invasive interventions result in smaller scars, fewer complications and a quicker recovery. While to the patients benefit, it has the drawback of limiting the physician’s perception largely to that of visual feedback through a camera mounted on a rod lens: the laparoscope. Conventional laparoscopes are limited by “imitating” the human eye. Multispectral cameras remove this arbitrary restriction of recording only red, green and blue colors. Instead, they capture many specific bands of light. Although these could help characterize important indications such as ischemia and early stage adenoma, the lack of powerful digital image processing prevents realizing the technique’s full potential. The primary objective of this thesis was to pioneer fluent functional multispectral imaging (MSI) in laparoscopy. The main technical obstacles were: (1) The lack of image analysis concepts that provide both high accuracy and speed. (2) Multispectral image recording is slow, typically ranging from seconds to minutes. (3) Obtaining a quantitative ground truth for the measurements is hard or even impossible. To overcome these hurdles and enable functional laparoscopy, for the first time in this field physical models are combined with powerful machine learning techniques. The physical model is employed to create highly accurate simulations, which in turn teach the algorithm to rapidly relate multispectral pixels to underlying functional changes. To reduce the domain shift introduced by learning from simulations, a novel transfer learning approach automatically adapts generic simulations to match almost arbitrary recordings of visceral tissue. In combination with the only available video-rate capable multispectral sensor, the method pioneers fluent perfusion monitoring with MSI. This system was carefully tested in a multistage process, involving in silico quantitative evaluations, tissue phantoms and a porcine study. Clinical applicability was ensured through in-patient recordings in the context of partial nephrectomy; in these, the novel system characterized ischemia live during the intervention. Verified against a fluorescence reference, the results indicate that fluent, non-invasive ischemia detection and monitoring is now possible. In conclusion, this thesis presents the first multispectral laparoscope capable of videorate functional analysis. The system was successfully evaluated in in-patient trials, and future work should be directed towards evaluation of the system in a larger study.     Investigations into colour constancy by bridging human and computer colour vision

    PhD ThesisThe mechanism of colour constancy within the human visual system has long been of great interest to researchers within the psychophysical and image processing communities. With the maturation of colour imaging techniques for both scientific and artistic applications the importance of colour capture accuracy has consistently increased. Colour offers a great deal more information for the viewer than grayscale imagery, ranging from object detection to food ripeness and health estimation amongst many others. However these tasks rely upon the colour constancy process in order to discount scene illumination to allow these tasks to be carried out. Psychophysical studies have attempted to uncover the inner workings of this mechanism, which would allow it to be reproduced algorithmically. This would allow the development of devices which can eventually capture and perceive colour in the same manner as a human viewer. These two communities have approached this challenge from opposite ends, and as such very different and largely unconnected approaches. This thesis investigates the development of studies and algorithms which bridge the two communities. Utilising findings from psychophysical studies as inspiration to firstly improve an existing image enhancement algorithm. Results are then compared to state of the art methods. Then, using further knowledge, and inspiration, of the human visual system to develop a novel colour constancy approach. This approach attempts to mimic and replicate the mechanism of colour constancy by investigating the use of a physiological colour space and specific scene contents to estimate illumination. Performance of the colour constancy mechanism within the visual system is then also investigated. The performance of the mechanism across different scenes and commonly and uncommonly encountered illuminations is tested. The importance of being able to bridge these two communities, with a successful colour constancy method, is then further illustrated with a case study investigating the human visual perception of the agricultural produce of tomatoes.EPSRC DTA: Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University

    Cage row arrangement affects the performance of laying hens in the hot humid tropics

    Although the traditional cage system of housing laying hens is gradually being faced out due to welfare reasons, cages are still common in most developing tropical countries in different arrangements. In a 12-week experiment, the effects of a three cage row arrangement on hen-day production and egg qualities of Shaver Brown hens was studied. Data were collected from 2 layer sheds housing 9,000 hens in a 3-cage row arrangement (southern row, northern row and middle row) with 3,000 hens per row. Data were analysed for a randomized complete block design where cage rows were the treatments and weeks the blocks. Results showed no significant effects of cage row arrangement on feed intake, hen-day production, per cent yolk and Haugh unit (P>0.05). Egg weight, egg mass and per cent shell were significantly reduced and feed conversion ratio increased on the middle row (P<0.05). Egg weight, egg mass, per cent shell and feed conversion ratio did not differ between the side rows (P>0.05). These results suggest that battery cage row arrangement may not affect the rate of lay but egg weight, egg mass and efficiency of feed utilisation may be adversely affected in hens housed in the middle row. These findings have both economic and welfare implications

    Pameran Reka Cipta, Penyelidikan dan Inovasi (PRPI) 2009

    PRPI 2009 kini telah memasuki tahun penganjurannya yang ke-7. Pameran penyelidikan di UPM telah bermula sejak tahun 1997 semasa Exhibition & Seminar Harnessing for Industry Advantage. Pada tahun 2002, Pameran Reka Cipta dan Penyelidikan (PRP) buat pertama kali telah diadakan dengan menggunakan konsep pertandingan hasil projek penyelidikan yang telah dijalankan oleh para penyelidik UPM. Kejayaan penganjuran PRP 2002 telah merintis usaha untuk menjadikannya sebagai aktiviti tahunan UPM dan ianya terus berkembang sejajar dengan nama baharunya yang ditukar kepada Pameran Reka Cipta, Penyelidikan dan Inovasi yang bermula penganjurannya pada tahun 2005. Sebagai kesinambungan daripada kejayaan penganjuran PRPI 2006, 2007 dan 2008 yang lalu dan status UPM sebagai salah sebuah Universiti Penyelidikan, PRPI 2009 kali ini yang merupakan pameran penyelidikan yang terbesar di UPM terus dilaksanakan dengan aspirasi dan semangat yang lebih jitu. Pameran ini juga menjadi pelantar kepada para penyelidik untuk mengenengahkan hasil penyelidikan yang dijalankan dan penemuan baharu kepada umum. Di samping itu ianya juga menjadi penanda aras terhadap kualiti sesuatu projek penyelidikan bagi melayakkan para penyelidik UPM untuk menyertai pameran di peringkat kebangsaan dan seterusnya antarabangsa. Adalah diharapkan pelaksanaan PRPI 2009 ini akan dapat menyemarakkan budaya penyelidikan di kalangan staf dan juga pelajar UPM sekaligus menjadikan UPM sebagai Universiti Penyelidikan yang cemerlang di negara ini
