    The role of speech technology in biometrics, forensics and man-machine interface

    Day by day Optimism is growing that in the near future our society will witness the Man-Machine Interface (MMI) using voice technology. Computer manufacturers are building voice recognition sub-systems in their new product lines. Although, speech technology based MMI technique is widely used before, needs to gather and apply the deep knowledge of spoken language and performance during the electronic machine-based interaction. Biometric recognition refers to a system that is able to identify individuals based on their own behavior and biological characteristics. Fingerprint success in forensic science and law enforcement applications with growing concerns relating to border control, banking access fraud, machine access control and IT security, there has been great interest in the use of fingerprints and other biological symptoms for the automatic recognition. It is not surprising to see that the application of biometric systems is playing an important role in all areas of our society. Biometric applications include access to smartphone security, mobile payment, the international border, national citizen register and reserve facilities. The use of MMI by speech technology, which includes automated speech/speaker recognition and natural language processing, has the significant impact on all existing businesses based on personal computer applications. With the help of powerful and affordable microprocessors and artificial intelligence algorithms, the human being can talk to the machine to drive and control all computer-based applications. Today's applications show a small preview of a rich future for MMI based on voice technology, which will ultimately replace the keyboard and mouse with the microphone for easy access and make the machine more intelligent

    Speech Enhancement for Automatic Analysis of Child-Centered Audio Recordings

    Analysis of child-centred daylong naturalist audio recordings has become a de-facto research protocol in the scientific study of child language development. The researchers are increasingly using these recordings to understand linguistic environment a child encounters in her routine interactions with the world. These audio recordings are captured by a microphone that a child wears throughout a day. The audio recordings, being naturalistic, contain a lot of unwanted sounds from everyday life which degrades the performance of speech analysis tasks. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the utility of speech enhancement (SE) algorithms in the automatic analysis of such recordings. To this effect, several classical signal processing and modern machine learning-based SE methods were employed 1) as a denoiser for speech corrupted with additive noise sampled from real-life child-centred daylong recordings and 2) as front-end for downstream speech processing tasks of addressee classification (infant vs. adult-directed speech) and automatic syllable count estimation from the speech. The downstream tasks were conducted on data derived from a set of geographically, culturally, and linguistically diverse child-centred daylong audio recordings. The performance of denoising was evaluated through objective quality metrics (spectral distortion and instrumental intelligibility) and through the downstream task performance. Finally, the objective evaluation results were compared with downstream task performance results to find whether objective metrics can be used as a reasonable proxy to select SE front-end for a downstream task. The results obtained show that a recently proposed Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based progressive learning architecture provides maximum performance gains in the downstream tasks in comparison with the other SE methods and baseline results. Classical signal processing-based SE methods also lead to competitive performance. From the comparison of objective assessment and downstream task performance results, no predictive relationship between task-independent objective metrics and performance of downstream tasks was found

    Role of Therapeutic Devices in Enhancing Speech Intelligibility and Vocal Intensity in an Individual with Parkinson’s Disease

    The prevailing speech therapy techniques for treating hypokinetic dysarthria in individuals with Parkinson\u27s disease (PD) yields improvements within the clinical setting, however, maintenance and generalization of acquired behaviors continue to be a challenge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of portable therapeutic devices including Ambulatory Phonation Monitor with biofeedback (APM) and auditory masker in maintenance and carryover of improved speech. Our participant was an individual diagnosed with PD for the past 25 years who continued to display speech disturbances despite undergoing several behavioral speech therapy programs and neurosurgical procedures. Speech intelligibility and average intensity measures under automatic, elicited, and spontaneous speech tasks were recorded pre- and postusage of APM and auditory masker for a period of 1 week each. Preliminary findings showed no significant difference in the measures between means (P\u3e0.05) across all tasks for both the devices. Suggestions for future research on therapeutic devices are discussed

    Spoken content retrieval: A survey of techniques and technologies

    Speech media, that is, digital audio and video containing spoken content, has blossomed in recent years. Large collections are accruing on the Internet as well as in private and enterprise settings. This growth has motivated extensive research on techniques and technologies that facilitate reliable indexing and retrieval. Spoken content retrieval (SCR) requires the combination of audio and speech processing technologies with methods from information retrieval (IR). SCR research initially investigated planned speech structured in document-like units, but has subsequently shifted focus to more informal spoken content produced spontaneously, outside of the studio and in conversational settings. This survey provides an overview of the field of SCR encompassing component technologies, the relationship of SCR to text IR and automatic speech recognition and user interaction issues. It is aimed at researchers with backgrounds in speech technology or IR who are seeking deeper insight on how these fields are integrated to support research and development, thus addressing the core challenges of SCR

    Effects of errorless learning on the acquisition of velopharyngeal movement control

    Session 1pSC - Speech Communication: Cross-Linguistic Studies of Speech Sound Learning of the Languages of Hong Kong (Poster Session)The implicit motor learning literature suggests a benefit for learning if errors are minimized during practice. This study investigated whether the same principle holds for learning velopharyngeal movement control. Normal speaking participants learned to produce hypernasal speech in either an errorless learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was limited) or an errorful learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was not limited). Nasality level of the participants’ speech was measured by nasometer and reflected by nasalance scores (in %). Errorless learners practiced producing hypernasal speech with a threshold nasalance score of 10% at the beginning, which gradually increased to a threshold of 50% at the end. The same set of threshold targets were presented to errorful learners but in a reversed order. Errors were defined by the proportion of speech with a nasalance score below the threshold. The results showed that, relative to errorful learners, errorless learners displayed fewer errors (50.7% vs. 17.7%) and a higher mean nasalance score (31.3% vs. 46.7%) during the acquisition phase. Furthermore, errorless learners outperformed errorful learners in both retention and novel transfer tests.
