    A Combinatorial Certifying Algorithm for Linear Programming Problems with Gainfree Leontief Substitution Systems

    Linear programming (LP) problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems have been intensively studied in economics and operations research, and include the feasibility problem of a class of Horn systems, which arises in, e.g., polyhedral combinatorics and logic. This subclass of LP problems admits a strongly polynomial time algorithm, where devising such an algorithm for general LP problems is one of the major theoretical open questions in mathematical optimization and computer science. Recently, much attention has been paid to devising certifying algorithms in software engineering, since those algorithms enable one to confirm the correctness of outputs of programs with simple computations. In this paper, we provide the first combinatorial (and strongly polynomial time) certifying algorithm for LP problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems. As a by-product, we answer affirmatively an open question whether the feasibility problem of the class of Horn systems admits a combinatorial certifying algorithm

    Polynomial algorithms for partitioning a tree into single-center subtrees to minimize flat service costs

    This paper deals with the following graph partitioning problem. Consider a connected graph with n nodes, p of which are centers, while the remaining ones are units. For each unit-center pair there is a fixed service cost and the goal is to find a partition into connected components such that each component contains only one center and the total service cost is minimum. This problem is known to be NP-hard on general graphs, and here we show that it remains such even if the service cost is monotone and the graph is bipartite. However, in this paper we derive some polynomial time algorithms for trees. For this class of graphs we provide several reformulations of the problem as integer linear programs proving the integrality of the corresponding polyhedra. As a consequence, the tree partitioning problem can be solved in polynomial time either by linear programming or by suitable convex nondifferentiable optimization algorithms. Moreover, we develop a dynamic programming algorithm, whose recursion is based on sequences of minimum weight closure problems, which solves the problem on trees in O(np) time

    Sampling-based Approximation Algorithms for Multi-stage Stochastic Optimization

    Stochastic optimization problems provide a means to model uncertainty in the input data where the uncertainty is modeled by a probability distribution over the possible realizations of the data. We consider a broad class of these problems, called {it multi-stage stochastic programming problems with recourse}, where the uncertainty evolves through a series of stages and one take decisions in each stage in response to the new information learned. These problems are often computationally quite difficult with even very specialized (sub)problems being #P-complete. We obtain the first fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) for a broad class of multi-stage stochastic linear programming problems with any constant number of stages, without placing any restrictions on the underlying probability distribution or on the cost structure of the input. For any fixed kk, for a rich class of kk-stage stochastic linear programs (LPs), we show that, for any probability distribution, for any epsilon>0epsilon>0, one can compute, with high probability, a solution with expected cost at most (1+e)(1+e) times the optimal expected cost, in time polynomial in the input size, frac1epsilonfrac{1}{epsilon}, and a parameter lambdalambda that is an upper bound on the cost-inflation over successive stages. Moreover, the algorithm analyzed is a simple and intuitive algorithm that is often used in practice, the {it sample average approximation} (SAA) method. In this method, one draws certain samples from the underlying distribution, constructs an approximate distribution from these samples, and solves the stochastic problem given by this approximate distribution. This is the first result establishing that the SAA method yields near-optimal solutions for (a class of) multi-stage programs with a polynomial number of samples. As a corollary of this FPRAS, by adapting a generic rounding technique of Shmoys and Swamy, we also obtain the first approximation algorithms for the analogous class of multi-stage stochastic integer programs, which includes the multi-stage versions of the set cover, vertex cover, multicut on trees, facility location, and multicommodity flow problems

    AbstractMax-linear programs have been used to describe optimisation problems for multiprocessor interactive systems. In some instances the variables used in this model are required to be integer; however, no method seems to exist for finding integer solutions to max-linear programs.For a generic class of matrices, we show that integer solutions to two-sided max-linear systems and programs can be found in polynomial time. For general matrices, we adapt the existing methods for finding real solutions to obtain algorithms for finding integer solutions

    Characterizing Collision and Second-Preimage Resistance in Linicrypt

    Linicrypt (Carmer & Rosulek, Crypto 2016) refers to the class of algorithms that make calls to a random oracle and otherwise manipulate values via fixed linear operations. We give a characterization of collision-resistance and second-preimage resistance for a significant class of Linicrypt programs (specifically, those that achieve domain separation on their random oracle queries via nonces). Our characterization implies that collision-resistance and second-preimage resistance are equivalent, in an asymptotic sense, for this class. Furthermore, there is a polynomial-time procedure for determining whether such a Linicrypt program is collision/second-preimage resistant

    Some Speed-Ups and Speed Limits for Real Algebraic Geometry

    We give new positive and negative results (some conditional) on speeding up computational algebraic geometry over the reals: (1) A new and sharper upper bound on the number of connected components of a semialgebraic set. Our bound is novel in that it is stated in terms of the volumes of certain polytopes and, for a large class of inputs, beats the best previous bounds by a factor exponential in the number of variables. (2) A new algorithm for approximating the real roots of certain sparse polynomial systems. Two features of our algorithm are (a) arithmetic complexity polylogarithmic in the degree of the underlying complex variety (as opposed to the super-linear dependence in earlier algorithms) and (b) a simple and efficient generalization to certain univariate exponential sums. (3) Detecting whether a real algebraic surface (given as the common zero set of some input straight-line programs) is not smooth can be done in polynomial time within the classical Turing model (resp. BSS model over C) only if P=NP (resp. NP<=BPP). The last result follows easily from an unpublished result of Steve Smale.Comment: This is the final journal version which will appear in Journal of Complexity.     This thesis is concerned with solving NP-hard problems. We consider two prominent strategies of coping with such computationally hard questions efficiently. The first approach aims to design approximation algorithms, that is, we are content to find good, but non-optimal solutions in polynomial time. The second strategy is called Fixed-Parameter Tractability (FPT) and considers parameters of the instance to capture the hardness of the problem and by that, obtain efficient algorithms with respect to the remaining input. This thesis employs both strategies jointly to develop efficient approximation and exact algorithms using parameterization and modeling the problem as structured integer linear programs (ILPs), which can be solved in FPT. In the first part of this work, we concentrate on these well-structured ILPs. On the one hand, we develop an efficient algorithm for block-structured integer linear programs called n-fold ILPs. On the other hand, we investigate the similarly block-structured 2-stage stochastic ILPs and prove conditional lower bounds regarding the running time of any algorithm solving them that match the best known upper bounds. We also prove the tightness of certain structural parameters called sensitivity and proximity for ILPs which arise from combinatorial questions such as allocation problems. The second part utilizes n-fold ILPs and structural properties to add to and improve upon known results for Scheduling and Bin Packing problems. We design exact FPT algorithms for the Scheduling With Clique Incompatibilities, Bin Packing, and Multiple Knapsack problems. Further, we provide constant-factor approximation algorithms and polynomial time approximation schemes (PTAS) for the Class Constraint Scheduling problems. Broadening our scope, we also investigate this problem and the closely related Cardinality Constraint Scheduling problem in the online setting and derive lower bounds for the approximation ratios as well as a PTAS for them. Altogether, this thesis contributes to the knowledge about structured ILPs, proves their limits and reaffirms their usefulness for a plethora of allocation problems. In doing so, various new and improved algorithms with respect to the running time or approximation quality emerge
