    China Southern: Digital Environments as Geopolitical Contact Zones

    This dissertation examines the role of digital media in shaping the geopolitics and materiality of environments in China over the first two decades of the twenty-first century. I look at digital discourses (“smartness,” “connectivity,” “data transparency”), media practices (film/video, satellite images, data capture), and infrastructures (surveillance, telecommunication) and argue that environments, such as land, sea, and air, are increasingly transformed into political territories, and engineered as part of the new technologies of social governance in the digital era. More specifically, this dissertation moves from urban smart infrastructures in Southern China (chapter one), to contested mediations of the disputed South China Sea (chapter two), and finally, to the circulation of air pollution data and imaginaries across the global South (chapter three). With ethnographic research in addition to visual and discursive analysis, my work employs a multi-scalar approach—sub-national, regional, global—to explore both the institutional and popular actors that shape these eco-digital formations. Focusing on the South as both a geographical and political concept, this orientation challenges the Northern-centered vocabularies and framing to global film and media studies. Meanwhile, China Southern reinstates the transnational momentum of the Southern question (Casarino 2010), especially situated at the juncture between neoliberal experiments since the 1990s and the rise of the “Chinese Dream” in the 2000s as a cultural discourse. In doing so, this research contributes to the broader discussion on global governance, and conceptualizes the often obscured theoretical and material entanglement of media and environments in Asia

    Inter-sexual and inter-seasonal differences in the chemical signalling strategies of brown bears

    The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a species which, due to its solitary, dominance hierarchy social system and large home range, is thought to rely heavily on chemical signals as a means of communication. Through camera traps orientated towards bear ‘rub trees’ over a two-year period, we assessed the proportional contribution of scent marking in different seasons by different age sex classes, and gained insights into the role of chemical signalling in maintaining social structure. We found, during the breeding season (June-July), that both adult males (n=38 P1 year (n=11 P=0.003) scent marked trees significantly more often than expected, whereas lone adult females (n=7) and subadults (n=3) marked less than expected. Outside of the breeding season (August-October), adult males (n=70) marked in an expected proportion, females with cubs (all ages) marked significantly more than expected (n=71 P<0.001), and lone adult females (n=11) and subadults (n=15) marked less than expected. During both the breeding season (n=7 P=0.026) and the fall (n=11 P<0.001), adult females marked trees significantly less than their occurrence on bear trails would expect, as did subadults during the breeding season (n=3 P=0.026) but not during the fall (n=15). Adult males marked at significantly high frequencies both during and outside of the breeding season, potentially to communicate dominance between males. Supported by the low frequency of scent marking by subadults. We observed a total avoidance of bear trails containing active rub trees by females with cubs <1 year during the breeding season, a possible counterstrategy to sexually selected infanticide due to the strong male bias in scent marking during the breeding season. We hypothesize that scent marking in brown bears is taught by the mother, beginning with cubs <1 year outside of the breeding season at a relatively ‘safe’ time of year

    Security and defence research in the European Union: a landscape review

    This landscape report describes the state of play of the European Union’s policies and activities in security and defence and the EU-funded research aimed at supporting them, with an exclusive focus on intentional harm. It is organised around several thematic building blocks under the umbrella of the three core priorities defined in the European agenda on security. The report reviews the current main risks and threats but also those that may emerge within the next 5 years, the policy and operational means developed to combat them, the main active stakeholders and the EU legislation in force. In this context, a short history of EU research on security and defence is presented, followed by an inventory of relevant research and development projects funded under the Horizon 2020 framework programme during the period 2014-2018. The specific contributions of the Joint Research Centre to security research are also highlighted. Finally, future avenues for security and defence research and development are discussed.     The First Global Integrated Marine Assessment: World Ocean Assessment I

    We used satellite-derived sea-surface-temperature (SST) data along with in-situ data collected along a meridional transect between 18.85 and 20.25°N along 69.2°E to describe the evolution of an SST filament and front during 25 November to 1 December in the northeastern Arabian Sea (NEAS). Both features were &#8764; 100 km long, lasted about a week and were associated with weak temperature gradients (&#8764; 0.07°C km<sup>−1</sup>). The in-situ data were collected first using a suite of surface sensors during a north–south mapping of this transect and showed the existence of a chlorophyll maximum within the filament. This surface data acquisition was followed by a high-resolution south–north CTD (conductivity–temperature–depth) sampling along the transect. In the two days that elapsed between the two in-situ measurements, the filament had shrunk in size and moved northward. In general, the current direction was northwestward and advected these mesoscale features. The CTD data also showed an SST front towards the northern end of the transect. In both these features, the chlorophyll concentration was higher than in the surrounding waters. The temperature and salinity data from the CTD suggest upward mixing or pumping of water from the base of the mixed layer, where a chlorophyll maximum was present, into the mixed layer that was about 60 m thick. A striking diurnal cycle was evident in the chlorophyll concentration, with higher values tending to occur closer to the surface during the night. The in-situ data from both surface sensors and CTD, and so also satellite-derived chlorophyll data, showed higher chlorophyll concentration, particularly at sub-surface levels, between the filament and the front, but there was no corresponding signature in the temperature and salinity data. Analysis of the SST fronts in the satellite data shows that fronts weaker than those associated with the filament and the front had crossed the transect in this region a day or two preceding the sampling of the front
