Pixel and Voxel Representations of Graphs
We study contact representations for graphs, which we call pixel
representations in 2D and voxel representations in 3D. Our representations are
based on the unit square grid whose cells we call pixels in 2D and voxels in
3D. Two pixels are adjacent if they share an edge, two voxels if they share a
face. We call a connected set of pixels or voxels a blob. Given a graph, we
represent its vertices by disjoint blobs such that two blobs contain adjacent
pixels or voxels if and only if the corresponding vertices are adjacent. We are
interested in the size of a representation, which is the number of pixels or
voxels it consists of.
We first show that finding minimum-size representations is NP-complete. Then,
we bound representation sizes needed for certain graph classes. In 2D, we show
that, for -outerplanar graphs with vertices, pixels are
always sufficient and sometimes necessary. In particular, outerplanar graphs
can be represented with a linear number of pixels, whereas general planar
graphs sometimes need a quadratic number. In 3D, voxels are
always sufficient and sometimes necessary for any -vertex graph. We improve
this bound to for graphs of treewidth and to

Canonical ordering for graphs on the cylinder, with applications to periodic straight-line drawings on the flat cylinder and torus
We extend the notion of canonical ordering (initially developed for planar
triangulations and 3-connected planar maps) to cylindric (essentially simple)
triangulations and more generally to cylindric (essentially internally)
-connected maps. This allows us to extend the incremental straight-line
drawing algorithm of de Fraysseix, Pach and Pollack (in the triangulated case)
and of Kant (in the -connected case) to this setting. Precisely, for any
cylindric essentially internally -connected map with vertices, we
can obtain in linear time a periodic (in ) straight-line drawing of that
is crossing-free and internally (weakly) convex, on a regular grid
, with and ,
where is the face-distance between the two boundaries. This also yields an
efficient periodic drawing algorithm for graphs on the torus. Precisely, for
any essentially -connected map on the torus (i.e., -connected in the
periodic representation) with vertices, we can compute in linear time a

Surface embedding, topology and dualization for spin networks
Spin networks are graphs derived from 3nj symbols of angular momentum. The
surface embedding, the topology and dualization of these networks are
considered. Embeddings into compact surfaces include the orientable sphere S^2
and the torus T, and the not orientable projective space P^2 and Klein's bottle
K. Two families of 3nj graphs admit embeddings of minimal genus into S^2 and

Shortest path embeddings of graphs on surfaces
The classical theorem of F\'{a}ry states that every planar graph can be
represented by an embedding in which every edge is represented by a straight
line segment. We consider generalizations of F\'{a}ry's theorem to surfaces
equipped with Riemannian metrics. In this setting, we require that every edge
is drawn as a shortest path between its two endpoints and we call an embedding
with this property a shortest path embedding. The main question addressed in
this paper is whether given a closed surface S, there exists a Riemannian
metric for which every topologically embeddable graph admits a shortest path
embedding. This question is also motivated by various problems regarding
crossing numbers on surfaces.
We observe that the round metrics on the sphere and the projective plane have
this property. We provide flat metrics on the torus and the Klein bottle which
also have this property.
Then we show that for the unit square flat metric on the Klein bottle there
exists a graph without shortest path embeddings. We show, moreover, that for
large g, there exist graphs G embeddable into the orientable surface of genus
g, such that with large probability a random hyperbolic metric does not admit a
shortest path embedding of G, where the probability measure is proportional to
the Weil-Petersson volume on moduli space.
Finally, we construct a hyperbolic metric on every orientable surface S of
genus g, such that every graph embeddable into S can be embedded so that every

Unexpected behaviour of crossing sequences
The n-th crossing number of a graph G, denoted cr_n(G), is the minimum number
of crossings in a drawing of G on an orientable surface of genus n. We prove
that for every a>b>0, there exists a graph G for which cr_0(G) = a, cr_1(G) =
b, and cr_2(G) = 0. This provides support for a conjecture of Archdeacon et al.
and resolves a problem of Salazar.Comment: 21 page
Asymptotic expansion of the multi-orientable random tensor model
Three-dimensional random tensor models are a natural generalization of the
celebrated matrix models. The associated tensor graphs, or 3D maps, can be
classified with respect to a particular integer or half-integer, the degree of
the respective graph. In this paper we analyze the general term of the
asymptotic expansion in N, the size of the tensor, of a particular random
tensor model, the multi-orientable tensor model. We perform their enumeration

Grid-Obstacle Representations with Connections to Staircase Guarding
In this paper, we study grid-obstacle representations of graphs where we
assign grid-points to vertices and define obstacles such that an edge exists if
and only if an -monotone grid path connects the two endpoints without
hitting an obstacle or another vertex. It was previously argued that all planar
graphs have a grid-obstacle representation in 2D, and all graphs have a
grid-obstacle representation in 3D. In this paper, we show that such
constructions are possible with significantly smaller grid-size than previously
achieved. Then we study the variant where vertices are not blocking, and show
that then grid-obstacle representations exist for bipartite graphs. The latter
has applications in so-called staircase guarding of orthogonal polygons; using
our grid-obstacle representations, we show that staircase guarding is
