Analysis of Petri Nets and Transition Systems
This paper describes a stand-alone, no-frills tool supporting the analysis of
(labelled) place/transition Petri nets and the synthesis of labelled transition
systems into Petri nets. It is implemented as a collection of independent,
dedicated algorithms which have been designed to operate modularly, portably,
extensibly, and efficiently.Comment: In Proceedings ICE 2015, arXiv:1508.0459
Membrane Systems and Petri Net Synthesis
Automated synthesis from behavioural specifications is an attractive and
powerful way of constructing concurrent systems. Here we focus on the problem
of synthesising a membrane system from a behavioural specification given in the
form of a transition system which specifies the desired state space of the
system to be constructed. We demonstrate how a Petri net solution to this
problem, based on the notion of region of a transition system, yields a method
of automated synthesis of membrane systems from state spaces.Comment: In Proceedings MeCBIC 2012, arXiv:1211.347
A model driven approach to analysis and synthesis of sequence diagrams
Software design is a vital phase in a software development life cycle as it creates a blueprint for the implementation of the software. It is crucial that software designs are error-free since any unresolved design-errors could lead to costly implementation errors. To minimize these errors, the software community adopted the concept of modelling from various other engineering disciplines. Modelling provides a platform to create and share abstract or conceptual representations of the software system – leading to various modelling languages, among them Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Petri Nets. While Petri Nets strong mathematical capability allows various formal analyses to be performed on the models, UMLs user-friendly nature presented a more appealing platform for system designers. Using Multi Paradigm Modelling, this thesis presents an approach where system designers may have the best of both worlds; SD2PN, a model transformation that maps UML Sequence Diagrams into Petri Nets allows system designers to perform modelling in UML while still using Petri Nets to perform the analysis. Multi Paradigm Modelling also provided a platform for a well-established theory in Petri Nets – synthesis to be adopted into Sequence Diagram as a method of putting-together different Sequence Diagrams based on a set of techniques and algorithms
Bounded Petri Net Synthesis from Modal Transition Systems is Undecidable
In this paper, the synthesis of bounded Petri nets from deterministic modal transition systems is shown to be undecidable. The proof is built from three components. First, it is shown that the problem of synthesising bounded Petri nets satisfying a given formula of the conjunctive nu-calculus (a suitable fragment of the mu-calculus) is undecidable. Then, an equivalence between deterministic modal transition systems and a language-based formalism called modal specifications is developed. Finally, the claim follows from a known equivalence between the conjunctive nu-calculus and modal specifications
The Geometry of Concurrent Interaction: Handling Multiple Ports by Way of Multiple Tokens (Long Version)
We introduce a geometry of interaction model for Mazza's multiport
interaction combinators, a graph-theoretic formalism which is able to
faithfully capture concurrent computation as embodied by process algebras like
the -calculus. The introduced model is based on token machines in which
not one but multiple tokens are allowed to traverse the underlying net at the
same time. We prove soundness and adequacy of the introduced model. The former
is proved as a simulation result between the token machines one obtains along
any reduction sequence. The latter is obtained by a fine analysis of
convergence, both in nets and in token machines
Petri Nets at Modelling and Control of Discrete-Event Systems Containing Nondeterminism - Part 1
Discrete-Event Systems are discrete in nature, driven by discrete events. Petri Nets are one of the mostly used tools for their modelling and control synthesis. Place/Transitions Petri Nets, Timed Petri Nets, Controlled Petri Nets are suitable when a modelled object is deterministic. When the system model contains uncontrollable/unobservable transitions and unobservable/unmeasurable places or other failures, such kinds of Petri Nets are insufficient for the purpose. In such a case Labelled Petri Nets and/or Interpreted Petri Nets have to be used. Particularities and mutual differences of individual kinds of Petri Nets are pointed out and their applicability to modelling and control of Discrete-Event Systems are described and tested
A phenomenal basis for hybrid modelling
This work in progress extends the new mechanical philosophy from science to engineering. Engineering is the practice of organising the design and construction of artifices that satisfy needs in real-world contexts. This work shows how artifices can be described in terms of their mechanisms and composed through their observable phenomena.
Typically, the engineering of real system requires descrip- tions in many different languages: software components will be described in code; sensors and actuators in terms of their physical and electronic characteristics; plant in terms of differ- ential equations, perhaps. Another aspect of this work, then, to construct a formal framework so that diverse description languages can be used to characterise sub-mechanisms.
The work is situated in Problem Oriented Engineering, a design theoretic framework engineering defined by the first two authors
