    Personas versus clones for player decision modelling

    The current paper investigates how to model human play styles. Building on decision and persona theory we evolve game playing agents representing human decision making styles. Two methods are developed, applied, and compared: procedural personas, based on utilities designed with expert knowledge, and clones, trained to reproduce play traces. Additionally, two metrics for comparing agent and human decision making styles are proposed and compared. Results indicate that personas evolved from designer intuitions can capture human decision making styles equally well as clones evolved from human play traces.peer-reviewe

    Procedural personas as critics for dungeon generation

    This paper introduces a constrained optimization method which uses procedural personas to evaluate the playability and quality of evolved dungeon levels. Procedural personas represent archetypical player behaviors, and their controllers have been evolved to maximize a specific utility which drives their decisions. A “baseline” persona evaluates whether a level is playable by testing if it can survive in a worst-case scenario of the playthrough. On the other hand, a Monster Killer persona or a Treasure Collector persona evaluates playable levels based on how many monsters it can kill or how many treasures it can collect, respectively. Results show that the implemented two-population genetic algorithm discovers playable levels quickly and reliably, while the different personas affect the layout, difficulty level and tactical depth of the generated dungeons.The research was supported, in part, by the FP7 ICT project C2Learn (project no: 318480) and by the FP7 Marie Curie CIG project AutoGameDesign (project no: 630665).peer-reviewe

    Evolutionary machine learning (EML) has been applied to games in multiple ways, and for multiple different purposes. Importantly, AI research in games is not only about playing games; it is also about generating game content, modeling players, and many other applications. Many of these applications pose interesting problems for EML. We will structure this chapter on EML for games based on whether evolution is used to augment machine learning (ML) or ML is used to augment evolution.     Player Behavior Modeling in Video Games In this research, we study players’ interactions in video games to understand player behavior. The first part of the research concerns predicting the winner of a game, which we apply to StarCraft and Destiny. We manage to build models for these games which have reasonable to high accuracy. We also investigate which features of a game comprise strong predictors, which are economic features and micro commands for StarCraft, and key shooter performance metrics for Destiny, though features differ between different match types. The second part of the research concerns distinguishing playing styles of players of StarCraft and Destiny. We find that we can indeed recognize different styles of playing in these games, related to different match types. We relate these different playing styles to chance of winning, but find that there are no significant differences between the effects of different playing styles on winning. However, they do have an effect on the length of matches. In Destiny, we also investigate what player types are distinguished when we use Archetype Analysis on playing style features related to change in performance, and find that the archetypes correspond to different ways of learning. In the final part of the research, we investigate to what extent playing styles are related to different demographics, in particular to national cultures. We investigate this for four popular Massively multiplayer online games, namely Battlefield 4, Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and Destiny. We found that playing styles have relationship with nationality and cultural dimensions, and that there are clear similarities between the playing styles of similar cultures. In particular, the Hofstede dimension Individualism explained most of the variance in playing styles between national cultures for the games that we examined

Online gaming is changing the way people experience interactive entertainment in their homes, and massive multi-player online worlds are edging closer to becoming simulations of offline society. The significance of computer games can no longer be denied, and their future is bright as technology and game theory continue to create astounding and entertaining virtual worlds
