    Ubiquitous Access to Cultural Tourism Portals

    Web-based tourism information systems are more and more required to provide besides traditional tourism information about hotel facilities and infrastructure also cultural content comprising material heritage, performing art, folk tradition, handicraft or simply habits of everyday life. These cultural Web applications are required not to offer on-line brochures only, but rather to provide both, value and service. This paper focuses on two crucial aspects of cultural Web applications comprising quality of content and quality of access. As an example for achieving quality of content in terms of comprehensiveness and cross-national nature, the MEDINA portal is presented, allowing one-stop access to cultural information of fourteen Mediterranean countries. In order to provide quality of access, the notion of ubiquity is introduced, allowing to customize Web applications towards different kinds of contexts, thus supporting the cultural tourist with device-independent, time-aware, location-aware, and personalized services. 1

    Developing Adaptive and Personalized Mobile Applications: A Framework and Design Issues

    The rapid growth of mobile technology has expedited ubiquitous information access via handheld devices. However, the fundamental natures of mobile information systems are different from those of desktop applications in terms of purpose of use, device features, communication networks, and working environments. This poses various challenges to mobile information systems on how to deliver and present multimedia content in an effective and adaptive manner. One of the major challenges is to deliver personalized information to the right person in a preferred format based on the changing environment. This paper proposes an innovative framework for developing mobile applications that deliver personalized, context-aware, and adaptive content to mobile users. The framework consists of four major components: information selection, content analysis, media transcoding, and customized presentation.     Personalizing Interactions with Information Systems

    Personalization constitutes the mechanisms and technologies necessary to customize information access to the end-user. It can be defined as the automatic adjustment of information content, structure, and presentation tailored to the individual. In this chapter, we study personalization from the viewpoint of personalizing interaction. The survey covers mechanisms for information-finding on the web, advanced information retrieval systems, dialog-based applications, and mobile access paradigms. Specific emphasis is placed on studying how users interact with an information system and how the system can encourage and foster interaction. This helps bring out the role of the personalization system as a facilitator which reconciles the user’s mental model with the underlying information system’s organization. Three tiers of personalization systems are presented, paying careful attention to interaction considerations. These tiers show how progressive levels of sophistication in interaction can be achieved.     A Taxonomy of Web Personalization

    Web personalization has become an important way to provide individualized user experiences. As a fragmented use of the term “Web personalization” and a lack of a common framework potentially hinder the establishment of a cumulative body of research, we develop a taxonomy of Web personalization. Bringing together research from information systems, computer science, and marketing, we develop a taxonomy focusing on the meta-characteristics user modeling (with the dimensions type of data, acquisition method, and life span of data) and system adaptation (with the dimensions object, volatility, scope, and control of adaptation). We demonstrate an application of our taxonomy by analyzing a sample of articles published in premier information systems journals and present some exemplary use cases to demonstrate how the taxonomy could be applied in practical contexts
