Linearisation, error correction coding and equalisation for multi-level modulation schemes
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Engineering.Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been standardised for digital audio broadcasting (DAB), digital video broadcasting (DVB) and wireless local area networks (WLAN). OFDM systems are capable of effectively coping with frequency- selective fading without using complex equalisation structures. The modulation and demodulation processes using fast fourier transform (FFT) and its inverse (IFFT) can be implemented very efficiently. More recently, multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) based on the combination of OFDM and conventional CDMA has received growing attention in the field of wireless personal communication and digital multimedia broadcasting. It can cope with channel frequency selectivity due to its own capabilities of overcoming the asynchronous nature of multimedia data traffic and higher capacity over conventional multiple access techniques.
On the other hand, multicarrier modulation schemes are based on the transmission of a given set of signals on large numbers of orthogonal subcarriers. Due to the fact that the multicarrier modulated (MCM) signal is a superposition of many amplitude modulated sinusoids, its probability density function is nearly Gaussian. Therefore, the MCM signal is characterised by a very high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). As a result of the high PAPR, the MCM signal is severely distorted when a nonlinear high power amplifier (HPA) is employed to obtain sufficient transmitting power. This is very common in most communication systems, and decreases the performance significantly. The simplest way to avoid the nonlinear distortion is substantial output backoff (OBO) operating in the linear region of the HPA. However, because of the high OBO, the peak transmit power has to be decreased. For this reason, many linearisation techniques have been proposed to compensate for the nonlinearity without applying high OBO. The predistortion techniques have been known and studied as one of the most promising means to solve the problem. In this thesis, an improved memory mapping predistortion technique devised to reduce the large computational complexity of a fixed point iterative (FPI) predistorter is proposed, suitable especially for multicarrier modulation schemes. The proposed memory mapping predistortion technique is further extended to compensate for nonlinear distortion with memory caused by a shaping linear filter. The case of varying HPA characteristics is also considered by using an adaptive memory mapping predistorter which updates the lookup table (LUT) and counteracts these variations. Finally, an amplitude memory mapping predistorter is presented to reduce the LUT size.
Channel coding techniques have been widely used as an effective solution against channel fading in wireless environments. Amongst these, particular attention has been paid to turbo codes due to their performance being close to the Shannon limit. In-depth study and evaluation of turbo coding has been carried out for constant envelope signaling systems such as BPSK, QPSK and M-ary PSK. In this thesis, the performance of TTCM-OFDM systems with high-order modulation schemes, e.g. 16-QAM and 64-QAM, is investigated and compared with conventional channel coding schemes such as Reed-Solomon and convolutional coding. The analysis is performed in terms of spectral efficiency over a multipath fading channel and in presence of an HPA. Maximum a-priori probability (MAP), soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) and pragmatic algorithms are compared for non-binary turbo decoding with these systems. For this setup, iterative multiuser detection in TTCM/MC-CDMA systems with M-QAM is introduced and investigated, adopting a set of random codes to decrease the PAPR. As another application of TTCM, the performance of multicode CDMA systems with TTCM for outer coding over multipath fading channels is investigated

Design and Linearization of Energy Efficiency Power Amplifier in Nonlinear OFDM Transmitter for LTE-5G Applications. Simulation and measurements of energy efficiency power amplifier in the presence of nonlinear OFDM transmitter system and digital predistortion based on Hammerstein-Wiener method
This research work has made an effort to understand a novel line of radio frequency
power amplifiers (RFPAs) that address initiatives for efficiency enhancement and
linearity compensation to harmonize the fifth generation (5G) campaign. The objective
is to enhance the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-long
term evolution (OFDM-LTE) transmitter by reducing the nonlinear distortion of the
RFPA.
The first part of this work explores the design and implementation of 15.5 W class AB
RF power amplifier, adopting a balanced technique to stimulate efficiency enhancement
and redeeming exhibition of excessive power in the transmitter. Consequently, this work
goes beyond improving efficiency over a linear RF power amplifier design; in which a
comprehensive investigation on the fundamental and harmonic components of class F
RF power amplifier using a load-pull approach to realise an optimum load impedance
and the matching network is presented. The frequency bandwidth for both amplifiers was
allocated to operate in the 2.620-2.690 GHz of mobile LTE applications.
The second part explores the development of the behavioural model for the class AB
power amplifier. A particular novel, Hammerstein-Wiener based model is proposed to
describe the dynamic nonlinear behaviour of the power amplifier. The RF power amplifier
nonlinear distortion is approximated using a new linear parameter approximation
approach. The first and second-order Hammerstein-Wiener using the Normalised Least
Mean Square Error (NLMSE) algorithm is used with the aim of easing the complexity of
filtering process during linear memory cancellation. Moreover, an enhanced adaptive
Wiener model is proposed to explore the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The
proposed approach is able to balance between convergence speed and high-level
accuracy when compared with behavioural modelling algorithms that are more complex
in computation.
Finally, the adaptive predistorter technique is implemented and verified in the OFDM
transceiver test-bed. The results were compared against the computed one from
MATLAB simulation for OFDM and 5G modulation transmitters. The results have
confirmed the reliability of the model and the effectiveness of the proposed predistorter.Fundacão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, under

Enhanced Multicarrier Techniques for Professional Ad-Hoc and Cell-Based Communications (EMPhAtiC) Document Number D3.3 Reduction of PAPR and non linearities effects
Livrable d'un projet Européen EMPHATICLike other multicarrier modulation techniques, FBMC suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), impacting its performance in the presence of a nonlinear high power amplifier (HPA) in two ways. The first impact is an in-band distortion affecting the error rate performance of the link. The second impact is an out-of-band effect appearing as power spectral density (PSD) regrowth, making the coexistence between FBMC based broad-band Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) systems with existing narrowband systems difficult to achieve. This report addresses first the theoretical analysis of in-band HPA distortions in terms of Bit Error Rate. Also, the out-of band impact of HPA nonlinearities is studied in terms of PSD regrowth prediction. Furthermore, the problem of PAPR reduction is addressed along with some HPA linearization techniques and nonlinearity compensation approaches
Digital predistortion of RF amplifiers using baseband injection for mobile broadband communications
Radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) represent the most challenging
design parts of wireless transmitters. In order to be more energy efficient, PAs should operate in nonlinear region where they produce distortion that significantly degrades the quality of signal at transmitter’s output. With the aim of reducing this distortion and improve signal quality, digital predistortion (DPD) techniques are widely used. This work focuses on improving the performances of DPDs in modern, next-generation
wireless transmitters. A new adaptive DPD based on an iterative injection approach is developed and experimentally verified using a 4G signal. The signal performances at transmitter output are notably improved, while the proposed DPD does not require large digital signal processing memory resources and computational complexity. Moreover, the injection-based DPD theory is extended to be applicable in concurrent dual-band wireless transmitters. A cross-modulation problem specific to concurrent dual-band transmitters is investigated in detail and novel DPD based on simultaneous injection of intermodulation and cross-modulation distortion products is proposed. In order to mitigate distortion compensation limit phenomena and memory effects in highly
nonlinear RF PAs, this DPD is further extended and complete generalised DPD system for concurrent dual-band transmitters is developed. It is clearly proved in experiments that the proposed predistorter remarkably improves the in-band and out-of-band
performances of both signals. Furthermore, it does not depend on frequency separation between frequency bands and has significantly lower complexity in comparison with previously reported concurrent dual-band DPDs

Design and implementation of adaptive baseband predistorter for OFDM nonlinear transmitter. Simulation and measurement of OFDM transmitter in presence of RF high power amplifier nonlinear distortion and the development of adaptive digital predistorters based on Hammerstein approach.
The objective of this research work is to investigate, design and measurement of a digital
predistortion linearizer that is able to compensate the dynamic nonlinear distortion of a High
Power Amplifier (PA). The effectiveness of the proposed baseband predistorter (PD) on the
performance of a WLAN OFDM transmitter utilizing a nonlinear PA with memory effect is
observed and discussed. For this purpose, a 10W Class-A/B power amplifier with a gain of 22
dB, operated over the 3.5 GHz frequency band was designed and implemented.
The proposed baseband PD is independent of the operating RF frequency and can be used in
multiband applications. Its operation is based on the Hammerstein system, taking into account
PA memory effect compensation, and demonstrates a noticeable improvement compared to
memoryless predistorters.
Different types of modelling procedures and linearizers were introduced and investigated, in
which accurate behavioural models of Radio Frequency (RF) PAs exhibiting linear and
nonlinear memory effects were presented and considered, based on the Wiener approach
employing a linear parametric estimation technique. Three new linear methods of parameter
estimation were investigated, with the aim of reducing the complexity of the required filtering
process in linear memory compensation. Moreover, an improved wiener model is represented to
include the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The validity of the PA modelling approaches
and predistortion techniques for compensation of nonlinearities of a PA were verified by several
tests and measurements. The approaches presented, based on the Wiener system, have the
capacity to deal with the existing trade-off between accuracy and convergence speed compared
to more computationally complex behavioural modelling algorithms considering memory
effects, such as those based on Volterra series and Neural Networks.
In addition, nonlinear and linear crosstalks introduced by the power amplifier nonlinear
behaviour and antennas mutual coupling due to the compact size of a MIMO OFDM transmitter
have been investigated

Digitally-Compensated Wideband 60 GHz Test-Bed for Power Amplifier Predistortion Experiments
Millimeter waves will play an important role in communication systems in the near future. On the one hand, the bandwidths available at millimeter-wave frequencies allow for elevated data rates, but on the other hand, the wide bandwidth accentuates the effects of wireless front-end impairments on transmitted waveforms and makes their compensation more difficult. Research into front-end impairment compensation in millimeter-wave frequency bands is currently being carried out, mainly using expensive laboratory setups consisting of universal signal generators, spectral analyzers and high-speed oscilloscopes. This paper presents a detailed description of an in-house built MATLAB-controlled 60 GHz measurement test-bed developed using relatively inexpensive hardware components that are available on the market and equipped with digital compensation for the most critical front-end impairments, including the digital predistortion of the power amplifier. It also demonstrates the potential of digital predistortion linearization on two distinct 60 GHz power amplifiers: one integrated in a direct-conversion transceiver and an external one with 24 dBm output power
Design and Implementation of a Software Predistorter for amplifier linearization in OFDM-based SDR systems
In modern wireless communication systems, an important role is played by the amplifier in the RF transmitter. It controls the maximum distance covered, the battery consumption for mobile devices, heating, etc. Nowadays RF transmitter has a lot of uses, starting from old FM stations, and arriving, in the recent period, to piloting of drones. Simplifying as much as possible, what this device accomplishes is to convert the baseband signal containing the data to be transmitted into a radio frequency signal able to travel through the ether. This can be done directly, or in two distinct phases before passing to an intermediate frequency (IF). In both cases, the signal after conversion must be amplified with a power amplifier and then transmitted on the channel.
This thesis will focus on the amplifier part of the transmitter. In particular, existing predistortion techniques, used to improve the linearity of the power amplifier, and a software, non-real time, predistorter developed for the thesis will be described
