    Practical and Context-Aware Resource Adaptation in Mobile Networks

    With the proliferation of various portable devices such as smart phones, netbooks and tablets, it becomes more important to design and implement effective resource management schemes with (i) the increasing number of users in the network and (ii) the expectation of frequent and fast mobility of network users. In this dissertation, we conclude that the key to solve the problem in mobile networks is adaptive resource allocation, which requires the system to behave in an adaptive manner considering the dynamic network conditions and various context of mobile users. Specifically, we study the following critical resource allocation issues in this dissertation: (i) rate adaptation; (ii) station handoff; (iii) load balancing; and (iv) power saving, for each we have proposed an adaptive scheme, implemented it in the MadWifi device driver, and demonstrated its effectiveness via experiments

    As new mobile devices and mobile applications continue to growth, so does the data traffic demand for broadband services access and the user needs toward mobility, thereby, wireless application became today the fastest solution and lowest cost implementation unlike traditional wired deployment such as optical fibers and digital lines. WiMAX technology satisfies this gap through its high network performance over the air interface and high data rates based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standards, this original specification does not support mobility. Therefore, the IEEE introduces a new standard that enables mobility profiles under 802.16e-2005, from which three different types of handovers process are introduced as hard handover (HHO), macro diversity handover (MDHO) and fast base station switching (FBSS) handover. The objective of this master thesis is to analyze how the handover process affects network performance.     Regressive Prediction Approach to Vertical Handover in Fourth Generation Wireless Networks

    The over increasing demand for deployment of wireless access networks has made wireless mobile devices to face so many challenges in choosing the best suitable network from a set of available access networks. Some of the weighty issues in 4G wireless networks are fastness and seamlessness in handover process. This paper therefore, proposes a handover technique based on movement prediction in wireless mobile (WiMAX and LTE-A) environment. The technique enables the system to predict signal quality between the UE and Radio Base Stations (RBS)/Access Points (APs) in two different networks. Prediction is achieved by employing the Markov Decision Process Model (MDPM) where the movement of the UE is dynamically estimated and averaged to keep track of the signal strength of mobile users. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency can be reduced. The performances of various handover approaches influenced by different metrics (mobility velocities) were evaluated. The results presented demonstrate good accuracy the proposed method was able to achieve in predicting the next signal level by reducing the total handover latency

    Enhancing The Quality Of Service In Mobile Networks Based On Nemo Basic Support Protocol

    To fulfil the need for an uninterrupted Internet access along with the move in mobile networks as an alternative to the end-host mobility, the IETF NEMO working group was created to extend basic end-host mobility support in Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). This group standardizes NEMO Basic Support Protocol (NEMO BS) to support network mobility. However, the handover latency in NEMO BS is high and the nested tunnels’ problem in the nested NEMO networks is not considered in the main specification of this protocol.     User Experience Enhancement on Smartphones using Wireless Communication Technologies

In addition, in many cases, users use a smartphone while on the move, so if a wireless communication technologies and various sensors are used for a mobile user, a better user experience can be provided. For example, when a user moves while using Wi-Fi, the user experience can be improved by providing a seamless Wi-Fi service. In addition, it is possible to provide a special service such as indoor positioning or navigation by estimating the users mobility in an indoor environment, and additional services such as location-based advertising and payment systems can also be provided. Therefore, improving the user experience by using wireless communication technology and smartphones sensors is considered to be an important research field in the future. In this dissertation, we propose three systems that can improve the user experience or convenience by usingWi-Fi, BLE, and smartphones sensors: (i) BLEND: BLE beacon-aided fast Wi-Fi handoff for smartphones, (ii) PYLON: Smartphone based Indoor Path Estimation and Localization without Human Intervention, (iii) FINISH: Fully-automated Indoor Navigation using Smartphones with Zero Human Assistance. First, we propose fast handoff scheme called BLEND exploiting BLE as secondary radio. We conduct detailed analysis of the sticky client problem on commercial smartphones with experiment and close examination of Android source code. We propose BLEND, which exploits BLE modules to provide smartphones with prior knowledge of the presence and information of APs operating at 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi channels. BLEND operating with only application requires no hardware and Android source code modification of smartphones.We prototype BLEND with commercial smartphones and evaluate the performance in real environment. Our measurement results demonstrate that BLEND significantly improves throughput and video bitrate by up to 61% and 111%, compared to a commercial Android application, respectively, with negligible energy overhead. Second, we design a path estimation and localization system, termed PYLON, which is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. PYLON includes a novel landmark correction scheme that leverages real doors of indoor environments consisting of floor plan mapping, door passing time detection and correction. It operates without any user intervention. PYLON relaxes some requirements for localization systems. It does not require any modifications to hardware or software of smartphones, and the initial location of WiFi APs, BLE beacons, and users. We implement PYLON on five Android smartphones and evaluate it on two office buildings with the help of three participants to prove applicability and scalability. PYLON achieves very high floor plan mapping accuracy with a low localization error. Finally, We design a fully-automated navigation system, termed FINISH, which addresses the problems of existing previous indoor navigation systems. FINISH generates the radio map of an indoor building based on the localization system to determine the initial location of the user. FINISH relaxes some requirements for current indoor navigation systems. It does not require any human assistance to provide navigation instructions. In addition, it is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. We implement FINISH on five Android smartphones and evaluate it on five floors of an office building with the help of multiple users to prove applicability and scalability. FINISH determines the location of the user with extremely high accuracy with in one step. In summary, we propose systems that enhance the users convenience and experience by utilizing wireless infrastructures such as Wi-Fi and BLE and various smartphones sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer equipped in smartphones. Systems are implemented on commercial smartphones to verify the performance through experiments.     Implementation and Performance Analysis of Mobile Handoff Process on OpenFlow-based Wi-Fi Network

    Research in communication network has the limit due to its problem of the supply frequency and equipment. To overcome this problem, open source can be the solution to build a helpful test bed for the research or academic purpose. Open source network can be developed using Software Defined Network (SDN) which has been continuosly developed due enormous number of installed base equipment and protocols that are inflexible, predefined, and fixed since SDN offers a flexible, dynamic, and programmable functionality of network systems. By using OpenFlow as its protocol, we can program the network flow in a flow table on different switches and routers. This research approches an OpenFlow-based Wi-Fi environment using OpenFlow-based Access Point (OFAP) and OpenFlow controller. Each OFAP is deployed at two different rooms and performed several experiments to evaluate handoff delay. The result of this experiment show that OpenFlow-based network show more stable process than traditional network because of installed flows given to each packets however the discovered value needs to be examined further due to better mechanism towards installed flows. The handoff delay between OFAPs is 24% faster than handoff delay between traditional AP with average of 79.9 miliseconds. By use of this system, we believe it could deliver high performance network and increase reliability for the real-time traffic over WLAN, by reducing handoff delay compared to classical Wi-Fi environment
