Fuzzy-logic-based control, filtering, and fault detection for networked systems: A Survey

    Get PDF
This paper is concerned with the overview of the recent progress in fuzzy-logic-based filtering, control, and fault detection problems. First, the network technologies are introduced, the networked control systems are categorized from the aspects of fieldbuses and industrial Ethernets, the necessity of utilizing the fuzzy logic is justified, and the network-induced phenomena are discussed. Then, the fuzzy logic control strategies are reviewed in great detail. Special attention is given to the thorough examination on the latest results for fuzzy PID control, fuzzy adaptive control, and fuzzy tracking control problems. Furthermore, recent advances on the fuzzy-logic-based filtering and fault detection problems are reviewed. Finally, conclusions are given and some possible future research directions are pointed out, for example, topics on two-dimensional networked systems, wireless networked control systems, Quality-of-Service (QoS) of networked systems, and fuzzy access control in open networked systems. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61329301, 61374039, 61473163, and 61374127, the Hujiang Foundation of China under Grants C14002 andD15009, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK, the Royal Society of the UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

Detection and Location of Faults in Wide Area Systems based on Error-Dependent Communication Strategy

Transmission system serves as a crucial link between generating stations and consumers. Early detection and accurate location of faults on transmission lines are essential to prevent the occurrence of blackouts. Also real time monitoring of power system states during faults will enhance the situational awareness for power system operators. Wide Area Measurement and Protection Systems (WAMPS) based on Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) are a promising solution for dynamic real time monitoring and protection of power system.;This thesis deals with detection and location of faults on a transmission system based on synchrophasor technology. Performance of WAMPS is largely dependent on the performance of its information and communication technologies infrastructure. Error-dependent communication strategy is employed in this work for communication of real time data from PMU to the centralized controller. As PMUs are expensive, they cannot be placed at every bus. Hence linear state estimator based on synchronized measurements is employed for estimating the state of the entire system. The estimated states of the system are then compared to a certain threshold and if any abnormality is found, fault is detected. Once the faulted bus is detected, two-terminal algorithm is employed to identify the exact location of fault. The proposed methodology is implemented on IEEE 9 bus system developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment

Optimal design of switched Ethernet networks implementing the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol

International audienceSwitched Ethernet networks rely on the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to ensure a cycle-free connectivity between nodes, by reducing the topology of the network to a spanning tree. The Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) allows for the providers to partition the traffic in the network and assign it to different virtual local area networks, each satisfying the STP. In this manner, it is possible to make a more efficient use of the physical resources in the network. In this paper we consider the traffic engineering problem of finding optimal designs of switched Ethernet networks implementing the MSTP, such that the worst-case link utilization is minimized. We show that this problem is N P-hard. We propose three mixed-integer linear programming formulations for this problem. Through a large set of computational experiments, we compare the performance of these formulations. Until now, the problem was almost exclusively solved with heuristics. Our objective here is provide a first comparison of different models that can be used in exact methods

Using Direct-Sequenced Spread Spectrum in a Wired Local Area Network

    Get PDF
Code division multiple access provides an ability to share channel bandwidth amongst users at the same time. Individual user performance is not degraded with the addition of more users, unlike traditional Ethernet. Using direct sequenced spread spectrum in a wired local area network, network performance is improved. For a network in overload conditions, individual station throughput is increased by nearly 212% while mean end-to-end delay was reduced by 800%. The vast improvement demonstrated by this research has the capability to extend legacy-cabling infrastructures for many years to come while easily accommodating new bandwidth intensive multimedia applications

Research reports: 1994 NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

For the 30th consecutive year, a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The basic objectives of the programs, which are in the 31st year of operation nationally, are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers. The Faculty Fellows spent 10 weeks at MSFC engaged in a research project compatible with their interests and background and worked in collaboration with a NASA/MSFC colleague. This document is a compilation of Fellows' reports on their research during the summer of 1994
