    Adaptive end-to-end optimization of mobile video streaming using QoS negotiation

    Video streaming over wireless links is a non-trivial problem due to the large and frequent changes in the quality of the underlying radio channel combined with latency constraints. We believe that every layer in a mobile system must be prepared to adapt its behavior to its environment. Thus layers must be capable of operating in multiple modes; each mode will show a different quality and resource usage. Selecting the right mode of operation requires exchange of information between interacting layers. For example, selecting the best channel coding requires information about the quality of the channel (capacity, bit-error-rate) as well as the requirements (latency, reliability) of the compressed video stream generated by the source encoder. In this paper we study the application of our generic QoS negotiation scheme to a specific configuration for mobile video transmission. We describe the results of experiments studying the overall effectiveness, stability, and dynamics of adaptation of our distributed optimization approach

    Experimenting with commodity 802.11 hardware: overview and future directions

    The huge adoption of 802.11 technologies has triggered a vast amount of experimentally-driven research works. These works range from performance analysis to protocol enhancements, including the proposal of novel applications and services. Due to the affordability of the technology, this experimental research is typically based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices, and, given the rate at which 802.11 releases new standards (which are adopted into new, affordable devices), the field is likely to continue to produce results. In this paper, we review and categorise the most prevalent works carried out with 802.11 COTS devices over the past 15 years, to present a timely snapshot of the areas that have attracted the most attention so far, through a taxonomy that distinguishes between performance studies, enhancements, services, and methodology.     The increase in the availability of bandwidth for wireless links, network integration, and the computational power on fixed and mobile platforms at affordable costs allows nowadays for the handling of audio and video data, their quality making them suitable for medical application. These information streams can support both continuous monitoring and emergency situations. According to this scenario, the authors have developed and implemented the mobile communication system which is described in this paper. The system is based on ITU-T H.323 multimedia terminal recommendation, suitable for real-time data/video/audio and telemedical applications. The audio and video codecs, respectively, H.264 and G723.1, were implemented and optimized in order to obtain high performance on the system target processors. Offline media streaming storage and retrieval functionalities were supported by integrating a relational database in the hospital central system. The system is based on low-cost consumer technologies such as general packet radio service (GPRS) and wireless local area network (WLAN or WiFi) for lowband data/video transmission.     Emulation platform design for multimedia applications over vehicular networks

    Safety applications seems that will be decisive for a successful introduction to the automotive market for the vehicular networks. However, another kind of applications could be very helpful in order to reach the maximum number of equipped vehicles after market introduction, because can attract a greater number of users and facilitate a vehicular infrastructure investment because vehicular communication must provide business opportunities for Internet service providers to generate revenue. One of these kind of applications is live video streaming over vehicular networks. Video streaming is an attractive feature to many applications, such as emergency live video transmission, video on demand services, road-side video advertisement broadcasting and inter-vehicle video conversation. Test and evaluate implementations in a real testbed environment could be very costly and di cult in this kind of networks. Simulations are still commonly used as a first step in any development for vehicular networks research. Therefore, to test this kind of applications an emulation platform for multimedia applications over vehicular networks is presented in this article.
