    Studies on 6-sector-site deployment in downlink LTE

    Mobile data traffic is expected to increase massively in the following years. Consequently, service operators are induced to increase the capacity of their networks continually to attract more subscribers and maximize their revenues. At the same time, they want to minimize operational costs and capital expenditures. Among the alternatives that aim to increase the network capacity, higher order sectorization, and in particular a six sectorized configuration, is nowadays attracting a lot of attention for LTE macro-cell deployments since a higher number of sectors per site results in improved site capacity and coverage. A six sectorized configuration is attractive for both roll-out phase and growth phase of the network. In the roll-out phase, the radio access network is planned with 6-sector sites instead of 3-sector sites with the advantage that less sites are needed for the same capacity and coverage requirements. In the growth phase, the six sectorized configuration can be used to upgrade existing 3-sector sites where the traffic grows beyond the current sites' capabilities. Therefore, no additional expensive and time consuming contracts need to be signed for the locations of the new sites, while the existing sites are used more efficiently. However, although potentially a 6-sector site can offer a double capacity than a 3-sector site, several factors prevent the capacity from growing proportionately to the number of sectors. Consequently, there is an uncertainty on whether the capacity gain is high enough to justify the extra costs of the additional equipment and, more specifically, whether the 6-sector-site deployment is more economically attractive than a 3-sector-site deployment. The aim of this report is to solve this uncertainty. First, we present the main factors that affect the capacity gain. Next, we quantify the impact of these factors on the capacity gain in downlink LTE with the use of a system level simulator. Finally, we use the results of the simulation study as inputs for an economic study to access the reasons for a possible deployment of 6-sector sites instead of 3-sector sites for LTE

    Long Term Evolution (LTE) is 3GPP enhancement to the current cellular system in use. The purpose of developing this system is to keep 3GPP systems competent enough for decades to come. LTE is designed to have wider channels up to 20MHz, with low latency and packet optimized radio access technology. The peak data rate envisaged for LTE is 100 Mbps in downlink and 50 Mbps in the uplink. With OFDM as the radio access technology, LTE has very promising features, like bandwidth scalability and both FDD and TDD duplexing methods. This thesis is related to the dimensioning of LTE radio access networks and the development of tool for dimensioning purpose. Different steps of the dimensioning process are listed and explained. Methods and models for coverage and capacity planning are developed for dimensioning of LTE radio access networks. Special emphasis is laid on radio link budget along with detailed coverage and capacity. The results are fabricated in an easy-to-use tool for dimensioning. The tool is made in Excel to serve the ease of working. Particular importance is given to clarity in the design of dimensioning tool, achieved by dividing the tool into clearly defined sections. Inputs and outputs are placed on separate sheets. The dimensioning tool calculates the number of cells needed to cover a given area with the user-provided parameters. Excel based tool covers all the basic aspects of the dimensioning process for LTE Access Networks

    A Novel Handover Decision Policy for Reducing Power Transmissions in the two-tier LTE network

    Femtocells are attracting a fast increasing interest nowadays, as a promising solution to improve indoor coverage, enhance system capacity, and lower transmit power. Technical challenges still remain, however, mainly including interference, security and mobility management, intercepting wide deployment and adoption from mobile operators and end users. This paper describes a novel handover decision policy for the two-tier LTE network, towards reducing power transmissions at the mobile terminal side. The proposed policy is LTE backward-compatible, as it can be employed by suitably adapting the handover hysteresis margin with respect to a prescribed SINR target and standard LTE measurements. Simulation results reveal that compared to the widely-adopted strongest cell policy, the proposed policy can greatly reduce the power consumption at the LTE mobile terminals, and lower the interference network-wide

    The need of broadband services to reduce digital divide in rural areas had increased in the recent years. The government of the Republic Indonesia shared similar intention and had set guidance of ICT development in its "economic master plan" and "medium term development plan". This paper addressed feasibility and suitability of its implementation in Indonesia, by conducting assessment of possible solutions. Using mixed method, the study was started with qualitative approach to identify possible options, conducted benchmarking and case study analysis to narrow down the options and finally conducted quantitative calculation for the two remaining options and measure performance of the solutions. The results of analysis concluded that early implementation of LTE in 700 MHz Digital Dividend would be feasible in certain geographical areas to fasten the broadband plan development in Indonesia

    Energy Efficient Mobility Management for the Macrocell – Femtocell LTE Network

    Femtocells will play a key role in future deployments of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, as they are expected to enhance system capacity, and greatly improve the energy-efficiency in a cost-effective manner. Due to the short transmit-receive distance, femtocells prolong handset battery life and enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) perceived by the end users. However, large-scale femtocell deployment comprises many technical challenges, mainly including security, interference and mobility management. Under the viewpoint of energy-efficient mobility management, this chapter discusses the key features of the femtocell technology and presents a novel energy-efficient handover decision policy for the macrocell – femtocell LTE network. The proposed HO decision policy aims at reducing the transmit power of the LTE mobile terminals in a backwards compatible with the standard LTE handover decision procedure. Simulation results show that significantly lower energy and power consumption can be attained if the proposed approach is employed, at the cost of a moderately increased number of handover executions events
