    A novel ingress node design for video streaming over optical burst switching networks

    This paper introduces a novel ingress node design which takes advantage of video data partitioning in order to deliver enhanced video streaming quality when using H.264/AVC codec over optical burst switching networks. Ns2 simulations show that the proposed scheme delivers improved video traffic quality without affecting other traffic, such as best effort traffic. Although the extra network load is comparatively small, the average gain in video PSNR was 5 dB over existing burst cloning schemes, with a maximum end-to-end delay of 17 ms, and jitter of less than 0.35 ms

    Service-Oriented Multigranular Optical Network Architecture for Clouds

    This paper presents a novel service-oriented network architecture to bridge the informational gap between user applications and optical networks providing technology-agnostic multigranular optical network services for clouds. A mediation layer (service plane) between user applications and network control is proposed to facilitate a mapping process between user application requests and the network services. At the network level, a multigranular optical network (MGON) is proposed and implemented to support dynamic wavelength and subwavelength granularities with different transport formats [optical burst switched (OBS), optical burst transport (OBT)], reservation protocols (one-way, two-way), and different quality-of-service (QoS) levels per service type. The service-oriented multigranular optical network has been designed, implemented, and demonstrated on an experimental testbed. The testbed consists of service and network resource provisioning, service abstraction, and network resource virtualization. The service-to-network interoperation is provided by means of a gateway that maps service requests to technology-specific parameters and a common signaling channel for both service and network resource provisioning

    Abstract. 5G Network has many important properties, including increased bandwidth, increased data throughput, high reliability, high network density, and low latency. This thesis concentrate on the low latency attribute of the 5G Standalone (SA) mode and 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) mode. One of the most critical considerations in 5G is to have low latency network for various delay-sensitive applications, such as remote diagnostics and surgery in healthcare, self-driven cars, industrial factory automation, and live audio productions in the music industry. Therefore, 5G employs various retransmission algorithms and techniques to meet the low latency standards, a new frame structure with multiple subcarrier spacing (SCS) and time slots, and a new cloud-native core. For the low latency measurements, a test setup is built. A video is sent from the 5G User Equipment (UE) to the multimedia server deployed in the University of Oulu 5G test Network (5GTN) edge server. The University of Oulu 5GTN is operating both in NSA and SA modes. Delay is measured both for the downlink and the uplink direction with Qosium tool. When calculating millisecond-level transmission delays, clock synchronization is essential. Therefore, Precision Time Protocol daemon (PTPd) service is initiated on both the sending and receiving machines. The tests comply with the specifications developed at the University of Oulu 5GTN for both the SA and the NSA mode. When the delay measurement findings were compared between the two deployment modes, it was observed that the comparison was not appropriate. The primary reason for this is that in the 5GTN, the NSA and the SA have entirely different data routing paths and configurations. Additionally, the author did not have sufficient resources to make the required architectural changes

    Multiservice QoS-Enabled MAC for Optical Burst Switching

    The emergence of a broad range of network-driven applications (e.g., multimedia, online gaming) brings in the need for a network environment able to provide multiservice capabilities with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. In this paper, a medium access control protocol is proposed to support multiple services and QoS levels in optical burst-switched mesh networks without wavelength conversion. The protocol provides two different access mechanisms, queue-arbitrated and prearbitrated for connectionless and connection-oriented burst transport, respectively. It has been evaluated through extensive simulations and its simplistic form makes it very promising for implementation and deployment. Results indicate that the protocol can clearly provide a relative quality differentiation for connectionless traffic and guarantee null (or negligible, and thus acceptable) burst loss probability for a wide range of network (or offered) load while ensuring low access delay for the higher-priority traffic. Furthermore, in the multiservice scenario mixing connectionless and connection-oriented burst transmissions, three different prearbitrated slot scheduling algorithms are evaluated, each one providing a different performance in terms of connection blocking probability. The overall results demonstrate the suitability of this architecture for future integrated multiservice optical networks

    Análisis de la calidad del streaming de vídeo a través de redes OBS

    Las redes de conmutación de ráfagas sobre fibra óptica cobran fuerza como la mejor opción para las redes troncales en un futuro a corto medio plazo y, ante el auge de uso del streaming de vídeo, se hace necesario un análisis profundo de la calidad de la transmisión de vídeo en estas redes. Para ello se ha simulado el envío de tráfico de vídeo con un ancho de banda agregado suficiente para la transmisión de vídeo en alta definición o varios decenas a cientos de vídeos de baja calidad, a través de una red OBS la cual se simula con los parámetros más usuales en este tipo de redes. Se utilizan los tres protocolos de ensamblado más extendidos en las diversas investigaciones sobre este campo, es decir, ensamblado con límite de tiempo, con límite de tamaño y ensamblado híbrido siendo el objetivo analizar cuál es el que produce una degradación menor en el vídeo transmitido.The optical burst switching networks gain strength as the best option in short-medium term future for backbone networks, address the increase of the video streaming usage, a deep analysis of video transmission quality of these networks becomes necessary. For that purpose diverse video send has been simulated, with an aggregated bandwith high enough for the transmission of High Definition Video or some dozens or hundreds of low quality video streaming through the OBS network, which is simulated with the more usual parameters in this networks. The three assembly protocols most extended in the researches about this issue are used, namely, time limited, size limited and hybrid assembly protocols, with the objective of analyze which is the one that produce less degradation in the transmitted video.Campos Rodríguez, J.
