    Recent Advances in Acquiring Channel State Information in Cellular MIMO Systems

    In cellular multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems the quality of the available channel state information (CSI) has a large impact on the system performance. Specifically, reliable CSI at the transmitter is required to determine the appropriate modulation and coding scheme, transmit power and the precoder vector, while CSI at the receiver is needed to decode the received data symbols. Therefore, cellular MUMIMO systems employ predefined pilot sequences and configure associated time, frequency, code and power resources to facilitate the acquisition of high quality CSI for data transmission and reception. Although the trade-off between the resources used user data transmission has been known for long, the near-optimal configuration of the vailable system resources for pilot and data transmission is a topic of current research efforts. Indeed, since the fifth generation of cellular systems utilizes heterogeneous networks in which base stations are equipped with a large number of transmit and receive antennas, the appropriate configuration of pilot-data resources becomes a critical design aspect. In this article, we review recent advances in system design approaches that are designed for the acquisition of CSI and discuss some of the recent results that help to dimension the pilot and data resources specifically in cellular MU-MIMO systems

In the literature, there is no convenient survey study that rounds up all the necessary points to be investigated concerning such systems. The current deeper review paper inspects and interprets the state of the art and addresses several research axes related to MIMO-OFDM systems. Two topics have received special attention: MIMO waveforms and MIMO-OFDM channel estimation. The existing MIMO hardware and software innovations, in addition to the MIMO-OFDM equalization techniques, are discussed concisely. In the literature, only a few authors have discussed the MIMO channel estimation and modeling problems for a variety of MIMO systems. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been until now no review paper specifically discussing the recent works concerning channel estimation and the equalization process for MIMO-OFDM systems. Hence, the current work focuses on analyzing the recently used algorithms in the field, which could be a rich reference for researchers.     Channel estimation in massive MIMO systems

    Last years were characterized by a great demand for high data throughput, good quality and spectral efficiency in wireless communication systems. Consequently, a revolution in cellular networks has been set in motion towards to 5G. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is one of the new concepts in 5G and the idea is to scale up the known MIMO systems in unprecedented proportions, by deploying hundreds of antennas at base stations. Although, perfect channel knowledge is crucial in these systems for user and data stream separation in order to cancel interference. The most common way to estimate the channel is based on pilots. However, problems such as interference and pilot contamination (PC) can arise due to the multiplicity of channels in the wireless link. Therefore, it is crucial to define techniques for channel estimation that together with pilot contamination mitigation allow best system performance and at same time low complexity. This work introduces a low-complexity channel estimation technique based on Zadoff-Chu training sequences. In addition, different approaches were studied towards pilot contamination mitigation and low complexity schemes, with resort to iterative channel estimation methods, semi-blind subspace tracking techniques and matrix inversion substitutes. System performance simulations were performed for the several proposed techniques in order to identify the best tradeoff between complexity, spectral efficiency and system performance

    On the Comparison of Various Overhead Arrangements for Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

    Massive multi input multi output (MIMO) systems incorporate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology to render high data rate services for future wireless communication applications. The channel estimator (CE) employed by a reliable massive MIMO-OFDM system requires huge amount of overhead in the form of known and null data transmissions, hence limiting the system spectral efficiency (SE). Often, CE design is a tradeoff between SE and system reliability. In this paper, CE with three different overhead arrangements, namely time domain synchronous (TDS), comb type with cyclic prefix (CTCP), 2D2D grid type with cyclic prefix (GTCP) are investigated and a GTCP based CE is proposed which offers both high SE and improved system reliability. The proposed CE uses autocorrelation based denoising threshold for channel impulse response (CIR) estimation and does not require any knowledge of channel statistics (KCS). A 4×164 \times 16 MIMO-OFDM system is simulated in a rayleigh fading channel environment with U-shaped doppler spectrum. From the bit error rate (BER) performance results in WiMax SUI-44, Advanced Television Technology Center (ATTC) and Brazil A channel environments, it is verified that the proposed CE with GTCP overhead and proposed denoising scheme, indeed improves both SE and system reliability. Hence it is suitable for application in all massive MIMO-OFDM systems

    We propose channel estimation algorithms and pilot signal optimization for the universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) system based on the comb-type pilot pattern. By considering the least square linear interpolation (LSLI), discrete Fourier transform (DFT), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and relaxed MMSE (RMMSE) channel estimators, we formulate the pilot signals optimization problem by minimizing the estimation MSE subject to the power constraint on pilot tones. The closed-form optimal solutions and minimum MSE are derived for LSLI, DFT, MMSE and RMMSE estimators

    Deep Learning for Channel Estimation and Signal Detection in OFDM-Based Communication Systems

    The goal of 6G communication networks requires higher transmission speeds, tremendous data processing, and low-latency communication. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), which is widely utilized in 5G communication systems, may be a viable alternative for 6G. It significantly reduces inter symbol interference (ISI) in the frequency-selective fading environment. Channel estimation is critical in OFDM to optimize system performance. Deep learning has been employed as an appealing alternative for channel estimation and signal detection in OFDM-based communication systems due to its better potential for feature learning and representation. In this study, we examine the deep neural network (DNN) layers created from long-short term memory (LSTM) for detecting the signals by learning the received signal as well as channel information. We investigate the performance of the system under various conditions. The simulation results show that the signal bit error (SER) is equivalent to and better than that of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and least square (LS) methods
