Tactile perception of randomly rough surfaces
Most everyday surfaces are randomly rough and self-similar on sufficiently small scales. We investigated the tactile perception of randomly rough surfaces using 3D-printed samples, where the topographic structure and the statistical properties of scale-dependent roughness were varied independently. We found that the tactile perception of similarity between surfaces was dominated by the statistical micro-scale roughness rather than by their topographic resemblance. Participants were able to notice differences in the Hurst roughness exponent of 0.2, or a difference in surface curvature of 0.8 mm−1 for surfaces with curvatures between 1 and 3 mm−1. In contrast, visual perception of similarity between color-coded images of the surface height was dominated by their topographic resemblance. We conclude that vibration cues from roughness at the length scale of the finger ridge distance distract the participants from including the topography into the judgement of similarity. The interaction between surface asperities and fingertip skin led to higher friction for higher micro-scale roughness. Individual friction data allowed us to construct a psychometric curve which relates similarity decisions to differences in friction. Participants noticed differences in the friction coefficient as small as 0.035 for samples with friction coefficients between 0.34 and 0.45

Patternshop: Editing Point Patterns by Image Manipulation
Point patterns are characterized by their density and correlation. While
spatial variation of density is well-understood, analysis and synthesis of
spatially-varying correlation is an open challenge. No tools are available to
intuitively edit such point patterns, primarily due to the lack of a compact
representation for spatially varying correlation. We propose a low-dimensional
perceptual embedding for point correlations. This embedding can map point
patterns to common three-channel raster images, enabling manipulation with
off-the-shelf image editing software. To synthesize back point patterns, we
propose a novel edge-aware objective that carefully handles sharp variations in
density and correlation. The resulting framework allows intuitive and
backward-compatible manipulation of point patterns, such as recoloring,
relighting to even texture synthesis that have not been available to 2D point
pattern design before. Effectiveness of our approach is tested in several user

Capturing tactile properties of real surfaces for haptic reproduction
Tactile feedback of an object’s surface enables us to discern its material properties and affordances. This understanding is used in digital fabrication processes by creating objects with high-resolution surface variations to influence a user’s tactile perception. As the design of such surface haptics commonly relies on knowledge from real-life experiences, it is unclear how to adapt this information for digital design methods. In this work, we investigate replicating the haptics of real materials. Using an existing process for capturing an object’s microgeometry, we digitize and reproduce the stable surface information of a set of 15 fabric samples. In a psychophysical experiment, we evaluate the tactile qualities of our set of original samples and their replicas. From our results, we see that direct reproduction of surface variations is able to influence different psychophysical dimensions of the tactile perception of surface textures. While the fabrication process did not preserve all properties, our approach underlines that replication of surface microgeometries benefits fabrication methods in terms of haptic perception by covering a large range of tactile variations. Moreover, by changing the surface structure of a single fabricated material, its material perception can be influenced. We conclude by proposing strategies for capturing and reproducing digitized textures to better resemble the perceived haptics of the originals
