    Patterns to distribute mobility simulations

    Travelers mobility simulation is a powerful tool to test strategies in a virtual environment, without impacting the quality of the real traffic network. However, existing mobility multiagent and micro-simulations can only consider a sample of the real volumes of travelers, especially for big regions. With distributed simulations, it would be easier to analyze and predict the status of nowadays networks. This kind of simulations requires big computational power and methods to split the simulation between several machines. This work describes how to achieve such a distribution in a microscopic simulation context, and compare our results with a previous work on macro-scopic simulation

    Evaluating Mobility Pattern Space Routing for DTNs

    Because a delay tolerant network (DTN) can often be partitioned, the problem of routing is very challenging. However, routing benefits considerably if one can take advantage of knowledge concerning node mobility. This paper addresses this problem with a generic algorithm based on the use of a high-dimensional Euclidean space, that we call MobySpace, constructed upon nodes' mobility patterns. We provide here an analysis and the large scale evaluation of this routing scheme in the context of ambient networking by replaying real mobility traces. The specific MobySpace evaluated is based on the frequency of visit of nodes for each possible location. We show that the MobySpace can achieve good performance compared to that of the other algorithms we implemented, especially when we perform routing on the nodes that have a high connection time. We determine that the degree of homogeneity of mobility patterns of nodes has a high impact on routing.     Implementation of quasi-static time series simulations for analysis of the impact of electric vehicles on the grid

Symmetrical loading- and voltage-related impacts are assessed for the extensive grid. A synthetic EV mix pattern was used with the purpose to demonstrate a universal observation of charging impacts. These patterns were allocated quasi-randomly to the points of common coupling within the grid based on predefined scenarios - 8, 10, 12 and 20 percent. Subsequently, quasi-static time series simulations for a duration of one year in 10-minute time steps were executed. Consequently, this paper yields results, which offer practical insight in the maximum share of electric vehicle charging in low-voltage distribution grids and provide guidance for future decision-making of distribution grid operators

    zCap: a zero configuration adaptive paging and mobility management mechanism

    Today, cellular networks rely on fixed collections of cells (tracking areas) for user equipment localisation. Locating users within these areas involves broadcast search (paging), which consumes radio bandwidth but reduces the user equipment signalling required for mobility management. Tracking areas are today manually configured, hard to adapt to local mobility and influence the load on several key resources in the network. We propose a decentralised and self-adaptive approach to mobility management based on a probabilistic model of local mobility. By estimating the parameters of this model from observations of user mobility collected online, we obtain a dynamic model from which we construct local neighbourhoods of cells where we are most likely to locate user equipment. We propose to replace the static tracking areas of current systems with neighbourhoods local to each cell. The model is also used to derive a multi-phase paging scheme, where the division of neighbourhood cells into consecutive phases balances response times and paging cost. The complete mechanism requires no manual tracking area configuration and performs localisation efficiently in terms of signalling and response times. Detailed simulations show that significant potential gains in localisation effi- ciency are possible while eliminating manual configuration of mobility management parameters.     MobiCacher: Mobility-Aware Content Caching in Small-Cell Networks

    Small-cell networks have been proposed to meet the demand of ever growing mobile data traffic. One of the prominent challenges faced by small-cell networks is the lack of sufficient backhaul capacity to connect small-cell base stations (small-BSs) to the core network. We exploit the effective application layer semantics of both spatial and temporal locality to reduce the backhaul traffic. Specifically, small-BSs are equipped with storage facility to cache contents requested by users. As the {\em cache hit ratio} increases, most of the users' requests can be satisfied locally without incurring traffic over the backhaul. To make informed caching decisions, the mobility patterns of users must be carefully considered as users might frequently migrate from one small cell to another. We study the issue of mobility-aware content caching, which is formulated into an optimization problem with the objective to maximize the caching utility. As the problem is NP-complete, we develop a polynomial-time heuristic solution termed {\em MobiCacher} with bounded approximation ratio. We also conduct trace-based simulations to evaluate the performance of {\em MobiCacher}, which show that {\em MobiCacher} yields better caching utility than existing solutions.Comment: Accepted by Globecom 201
