A Clustering System for Dynamic Data Streams Based on Metaheuristic Optimisation
open access articleThis article presents the Optimised Stream clustering algorithm (OpStream), a novel approach to cluster dynamic data streams. The proposed system displays desirable features, such as a low number of parameters and good scalability capabilities to both high-dimensional data and numbers of clusters in the dataset, and it is based on a hybrid structure using deterministic clustering methods and stochastic optimisation approaches to optimally centre the clusters. Similar to other state-of-the-art methods available in the literature, it uses “microclusters” and other established techniques, such as density based clustering. Unlike other methods, it makes use of metaheuristic optimisation to maximise performances during the initialisation phase, which precedes the classic online phase. Experimental results show that OpStream outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in several cases, and it is always competitive against other comparison algorithms regardless of the chosen optimisation method. Three variants of OpStream, each coming with a different optimisation algorithm, are presented in this study. A thorough sensitive analysis is performed by using the best variant to point out OpStream’s robustness to noise and resiliency to parameter changes
Evolving Ensemble Models for Image Segmentation Using Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization
In this paper, we propose particle swarm optimization (PSO)-enhanced ensemble deep neural networks and hybrid clustering models for skin lesion segmentation. A PSO variant is proposed, which embeds diverse search actions including simulated annealing, levy flight, helix behavior, modified PSO, and differential evolution operations with spiral search coefficients. These search actions work in a cascade manner to not only equip each individual with different search operations throughout the search process but also assign distinctive search actions to different particles simultaneously in every single iteration. The proposed PSO variant is used to optimize the learning hyper-parameters of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and the cluster centroids of classical Fuzzy C-Means clustering respectively to overcome performance barriers. Ensemble deep networks and hybrid clustering models are subsequently constructed based on the optimized CNN and hybrid clustering segmenters for lesion segmentation. We evaluate the proposed ensemble models using three skin lesion databases, i.e., PH2, ISIC 2017, and Dermofit Image Library, and a blood cancer data set, i.e., ALL-IDB2. The empirical results indicate that our models outperform other hybrid ensemble clustering models combined with advanced PSO variants, as well as state-of-the-art deep networks in the literature for diverse challenging image segmentation tasks
Improving a Particle Swarm Optimization-based Clustering Method
This thesis discusses clustering related works with emphasis on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) principles. Specifically, we review in detail the PSO clustering algorithm proposed by Van Der Merwe & Engelbrecht, the particle swarm clustering (PSC) algorithm proposed by Cohen & de Castro, Szabo’s modified PSC (mPSC), and Georgieva & Engelbrecht’s Cooperative-Multi-Population PSO (CMPSO). In this thesis, an improvement over Van Der Merwe & Engelbrecht’s PSO clustering has been proposed and tested for standard datasets. The improvements observed in those experiments vary from slight to moderate, both in terms of minimizing the cost function, and in terms of run time

A New Approach of Dynamic Clustering Based on Particle Swarm Optimization and Application in Image Segmentation
This paper presents a new approach of dynamic clustering based on improved Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and which is applied to image segmentation (called DCPSONS). Firstly, the original PSO algorithm is improved by using diversity mechanism and neighborhood search strategy. The improved PSO is then combined with the well-known data clustering k-means algorithm for dynamic clustering problem where the number of clusters has not yet been known. Finally, DCPSONS is applied to image segmentation problem, in which the number of clusters is automatically determined. Experimental results in using sixteen benchmark data sets and several images of synthetic and natural benchmark data demonstrate that the proposed DCPSONS algorithm substantially outperforms other competitive algorithms in terms of accuracy and convergence rate
A Novel Evolutionary Swarm Fuzzy Clustering Approach for Hyperspectral Imagery
In land cover assessment, classes often gradually change from one to another. Therefore, it is difficult to allocate sharp boundaries between different classes of interest. To overcome this issue and model such conditions, fuzzy techniques that resemble human reasoning have been proposed as alternatives. Fuzzy C-means is the most common fuzzy clustering technique, but its concept is based on a local search mechanism and its convergence rate is rather slow, especially considering high-dimensional problems (e.g., in processing of hyperspectral images). Here, in order to address those shortcomings of hard approaches, a new approach is proposed, i.e., fuzzy C-means which is optimized by fractional order Darwinian particle swarm optimization. In addition, to speed up the clustering process, the histogram of image intensities is used during the clustering process instead of the raw image data. Furthermore, the proposed clustering approach is combined with support vector machine classification to accurately classify hyperspectral images. The new classification framework is applied on two well-known hyperspectral data sets; Indian Pines and Salinas. Experimental results confirm that the proposed swarm-based clustering approach can group hyperspectral images accurately in a time-efficient manner compared to other existing clustering techniques.PostPrin
