    A communication-less parallel algorithm for tridiagonal Toeplitz systems

    AbstractDiagonally dominant tridiagonal Toeplitz systems of linear equations arise in many application areas and have been well studied in the past. Modern interest in numerical linear algebra is often focusing on solving classic problems in parallel. In McNally [Fast parallel algorithms for tri-diagonal symmetric Toeplitz systems, MCS Thesis, University of New Brunswick, Saint John, 1999], an m processor Split & Correct algorithm was presented for approximating the solution to a symmetric tridiagonal Toeplitz linear system of equations. Nemani [Perturbation methods for circulant-banded systems and their parallel implementation, Ph.D. Thesis, University of New Brunswick, Saint John, 2001] and McNally (2003) adapted the works of Rojo [A new method for solving symmetric circulant tri-diagonal system of linear equations, Comput. Math. Appl. 20 (1990) 61–67], Yan and Chung [A fast algorithm for solving special tri-diagonal systems, Computing 52 (1994) 203–211] and McNally et al. [A split-correct parallel algorithm for solving tri-diagonal symmetric Toeplitz systems, Internat. J. Comput. Math. 75 (2000) 303–313] to the non-symmetric case. In this paper we present relevant background from these methods and then introduce an m processor scalable communication-less approximation algorithm for solving a diagonally dominant tridiagonal Toeplitz system of linear equations

    Scalable iterative methods for sampling from massive Gaussian random vectors

    Sampling from Gaussian Markov random fields (GMRFs), that is multivariate Gaussian ran- dom vectors that are parameterised by the inverse of their covariance matrix, is a fundamental problem in computational statistics. In this paper, we show how we can exploit arbitrarily accu- rate approximations to a GMRF to speed up Krylov subspace sampling methods. We also show that these methods can be used when computing the normalising constant of a large multivariate Gaussian distribution, which is needed for both any likelihood-based inference method. The method we derive is also applicable to other structured Gaussian random vectors and, in particu- lar, we show that when the precision matrix is a perturbation of a (block) circulant matrix, it is still possible to derive O(n log n) sampling schemes.Comment: 17 Pages, 4 Figure

    Iterative Solvers for Large, Dense Matrices

    Stochastic Interpolation (SI) uses a continuous, centrally symmetric probability distribution function to interpolate a given set of data points, and splits the interpolation operator into a discrete deconvolution followed by a discrete convolution of the data. The method is particularly effective for large data sets, as it does not suffer from the problem of oversampling, where too many data points cause the interpolating function to oscillate wildly. Rather, the interpolation improves every time more data points are added. The method relies on the inversion of relatively large, dense matrices to solve Annx = b for x. Based on the probability distribution function chosen, the matrix Ann may have specific properties that make the problem of solving for x tractable. The iterative Shulz Jones Mayer (SJM) method relies on an initial guess, which is iterated to approximate A�1 nn . We present initial guesses that are guaranteed to converge quadratically for several classes of matrices, including diagonally and tri-diagonally dominant matrices and the structured matrices we encounter in the implementation of SI. We improve the method, creating the Polynomial Shulz Jones Mayer method, and take advantage of the more efficient matrix operations possible for Toeplitz matrices. We calculate error bounds and use those to improve the method’s accuracy, resulting in a method requiring O(nlogn) operations that returns x with double precision.     Surface spin dynamics of antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated triangular films

    Results are presented for spin-wave dispersions in geometrically frustrated stacked triangular antiferromagnets with a thin film or semi-infinite geometry having either zero, easy-plane, or easy-axis anisotropy. Surface effects on the equilibrium spin configurations and excitation spectrum are investigated for the case of antiferromagnetically coupled films, serving to extend previous results on ferromagnetically coupled layers [E. Meloche et al., Phys. Rev. B 74, 094424 (2006)]. An operator equation of motion formalism is applied to systems which are quasi-one and quasi-two dimensional in character. In contrast to the case of ferromagnetically coupled films the new results show surface modes that are well separated in frequency from bulk excitations. Magnetic excitations in thin films with an even or an odd number of layers show qualitatively different behavior. These results are relevant for a wide variety of stacked triangular antiferromagnetics materials.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Preconditioned fast solvers for large linear systems with specific sparse and/or Toeplitz-like structures and applications

    In this thesis, the design of the preconditioners we propose starts from applications instead of treating the problem in a completely general way. The reason is that not all types of linear systems can be addressed with the same tools. In this sense, the techniques for designing efficient iterative solvers depends mostly on properties inherited from the continuous problem, that has originated the discretized sequence of matrices. Classical examples are locality, isotropy in the PDE context, whose discrete counterparts are sparsity and matrices constant along the diagonals, respectively. Therefore, it is often important to take into account the properties of the originating continuous model for obtaining better performances and for providing an accurate convergence analysis. We consider linear systems that arise in the solution of both linear and nonlinear partial differential equation of both integer and fractional type. For the latter case, an introduction to both the theory and the numerical treatment is given. All the algorithms and the strategies presented in this thesis are developed having in mind their parallel implementation. In particular, we consider the processor-co-processor framework, in which the main part of the computation is performed on a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) accelerator. In Part I we introduce our proposal for sparse approximate inverse preconditioners for either the solution of time-dependent Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Chapter 3, and Fractional Differential Equations (FDEs), containing both classical and fractional terms, Chapter 5. More precisely, we propose a new technique for updating preconditioners for dealing with sequences of linear systems for PDEs and FDEs, that can be used also to compute matrix functions of large matrices via quadrature formula in Chapter 4 and for optimal control of FDEs in Chapter 6. At last, in Part II, we consider structured preconditioners for quasi-Toeplitz systems. The focus is towards the numerical treatment of discretized convection-diffusion equations in Chapter 7 and on the solution of FDEs with linear multistep formula in boundary value form in Chapter 8
