    PIRM: Processing In Racetrack Memories

    The growth in data needs of modern applications has created significant challenges for modern systems leading a "memory wall." Spintronic Domain Wall Memory (DWM), related to Spin-Transfer Torque Memory (STT-MRAM), provides near-SRAM read/write performance, energy savings and nonvolatility, potential for extremely high storage density, and does not have significant endurance limitations. However, DWM's benefits cannot address data access latency and throughput limitations of memory bus bandwidth. We propose PIRM, a DWM-based in-memory computing solution that leverages the properties of DWM nanowires and allows them to serve as polymorphic gates. While normally DWM is accessed by applying spin polarized currents orthogonal to the nanowire at access points to read individual bits, transverse access along the DWM nanowire allows the differentiation of the aggregate resistance of multiple bits in the nanowire, akin to a multilevel cell. PIRM leverages this transverse reading to directly provide bulk-bitwise logic of multiple adjacent operands in the nanowire, simultaneously. Based on this in-memory logic, PIRM provides a technique to conduct multi-operand addition and two operand multiplication using transverse access. PIRM provides a 1.6x speedup compared to the leading DRAM PIM technique for query applications that leverage bulk bitwise operations. Compared to the leading PIM technique for DWM, PIRM improves performance by 6.9x, 2.3x and energy by 5.5x, 3.4x for 8-bit addition and multiplication, respectively. For arithmetic heavy benchmarks, PIRM reduces access latency by 2.1x, while decreasing energy consumption by 25.2x for a reasonable 10% area overhead versus non-PIM DWM.Comment: This paper is accepted to the IEEE/ACM Symposium on Microarchitecture, October 2022 under the title "CORUSCANT: Fast Efficient Processing-in-Racetrack Memories

    An Overlay Architecture for Pattern Matching

    Deterministic and Non-deterministic Finite Automata (DFA and NFA) comprise the fundamental unit of work for many emerging big data applications, motivating recent efforts to develop Domain-Specific Architectures (DSAs) to exploit fine-grain parallelism available in automata workloads. This dissertation presents NAPOLY (Non-Deterministic Automata Processor Over- LaY), an overlay architecture and associated software that attempt to maximally exploit on-chip memory parallelism for NFA evaluation. In order to avoid an upper bound in NFA size that commonly affects prior efforts, NAPOLY is optimized for runtime reconfiguration, allowing for full reconfiguration in 10s of microseconds. NAPOLY is also parameterizable, allowing for offline generation of repertoire of overlay configurations with various trade-offs between state capacity and transition capacity. In this dissertation, we evaluate NAPOLY on automata applications packaged in ANMLZoo benchmarks using our proposed state mapping heuristic and off-shelf SAT solver. We compare NAPOLY鈥檚 performance against existing CPU and GPU implementations. The results show NAPOLY performs best for larger benchmarks with more active states and high report frequency. NAPOLY outperforms in 10 out of 12 benchmark suite to the best of state-of-the-art CPU and GPU implementations.     Optimizaci贸n del rendimiento y la eficiencia energ茅tica en sistemas masivamente paralelos

    RESUMEN Los sistemas heterog茅neos son cada vez m谩s relevantes, debido a sus capacidades de rendimiento y eficiencia energ茅tica, estando presentes en todo tipo de plataformas de c贸mputo, desde dispositivos embebidos y servidores, hasta nodos HPC de grandes centros de datos. Su complejidad hace que sean habitualmente usados bajo el paradigma de tareas y el modelo de programaci贸n host-device. Esto penaliza fuertemente el aprovechamiento de los aceleradores y el consumo energ茅tico del sistema, adem谩s de dificultar la adaptaci贸n de las aplicaciones. La co-ejecuci贸n permite que todos los dispositivos cooperen para computar el mismo problema, consumiendo menos tiempo y energ铆a. No obstante, los programadores deben encargarse de toda la gesti贸n de los dispositivos, la distribuci贸n de la carga y la portabilidad del c贸digo entre sistemas, complicando notablemente su programaci贸n. Esta tesis ofrece contribuciones para mejorar el rendimiento y la eficiencia energ茅tica en estos sistemas masivamente paralelos. Se realizan propuestas que abordan objetivos generalmente contrapuestos: se mejora la usabilidad y la programabilidad, a la vez que se garantiza una mayor abstracci贸n y extensibilidad del sistema, y al mismo tiempo se aumenta el rendimiento, la escalabilidad y la eficiencia energ茅tica. Para ello, se proponen dos motores de ejecuci贸n con enfoques completamente distintos. EngineCL, centrado en OpenCL y con una API de alto nivel, favorece la m谩xima compatibilidad entre todo tipo de dispositivos y proporciona un sistema modular extensible. Su versatilidad permite adaptarlo a entornos para los que no fue concebido, como aplicaciones con ejecuciones restringidas por tiempo o simuladores HPC de din谩mica molecular, como el utilizado en un centro de investigaci贸n internacional. Considerando las tendencias industriales y enfatizando la aplicabilidad profesional, CoexecutorRuntime proporciona un sistema flexible centrado en C++/SYCL que dota de soporte a la co-ejecuci贸n a la tecnolog铆a oneAPI. Este runtime acerca a los programadores al dominio del problema, posibilitando la explotaci贸n de estrategias din谩micas adaptativas que mejoran la eficiencia en todo tipo de aplicaciones.ABSTRACT Heterogeneous systems are becoming increasingly relevant, due to their performance and energy efficiency capabilities, being present in all types of computing platforms, from embedded devices and servers to HPC nodes in large data centers. Their complexity implies that they are usually used under the task paradigm and the host-device programming model. This strongly penalizes accelerator utilization and system energy consumption, as well as making it difficult to adapt applications. Co-execution allows all devices to simultaneously compute the same problem, cooperating to consume less time and energy. However, programmers must handle all device management, workload distribution and code portability between systems, significantly complicating their programming. This thesis offers contributions to improve performance and energy efficiency in these massively parallel systems. The proposals address the following generally conflicting objectives: usability and programmability are improved, while ensuring enhanced system abstraction and extensibility, and at the same time performance, scalability and energy efficiency are increased. To achieve this, two runtime systems with completely different approaches are proposed. EngineCL, focused on OpenCL and with a high-level API, provides an extensible modular system and favors maximum compatibility between all types of devices. Its versatility allows it to be adapted to environments for which it was not originally designed, including applications with time-constrained executions or molecular dynamics HPC simulators, such as the one used in an international research center. Considering industrial trends and emphasizing professional applicability, CoexecutorRuntime provides a flexible C++/SYCL-based system that provides co-execution support for oneAPI technology.     Techniques For Accelerating Large-Scale Automata Processing

    The big-data era has brought new challenges to computer architectures due to the large-scale computation and data. Moreover, this problem becomes critical in several domains where the computation is also irregular, among which we focus on automata processing in this dissertation. Automata are widely used in applications from different domains such as network intrusion detection, machine learning, and parsing. Large-scale automata processing is challenging for traditional von Neumann architectures. To this end, many accelerator prototypes have been proposed. Micron\u27s Automata Processor (AP) is an example. However, as a spatial architecture, it is unable to handle large automata programs without repeated reconfiguration and re-execution. We found a large number of automata states are never enabled in the execution but still configured on the AP chips, leading to its underutilization. To address this issue, we proposed a lightweight offline profiling technique to predict the never-enabled states and keep them out of the AP. Furthermore, we develop SparseAP, a new execution mode for AP to handle the misprediction efficiently. Our software and hardware co-optimization obtains 2.1x speedup over the baseline AP execution across 26 applications. Since the AP is not publicly available, we aim to reduce the performance gap between a general-purpose accelerator---Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and AP. We identify excessive data movement in the GPU memory hierarchy and propose optimization techniques to reduce the data movement. Although our optimization techniques significantly alleviate these memory-related bottlenecks, a side effect of them is the static assignment of work to cores. This leads to poor compute utilization as GPU cores are wasted on idle automata states. Therefore, we propose a new dynamic scheme that effectively balances compute utilization with reduced memory usage. Our combined optimizations provide a significant improvement over the previous state-of-the-art GPU implementations of automata. Moreover, they enable current GPUs to outperform the AP across several applications while performing within an order of magnitude for the rest of them. To make automata processing on GPU more generic to tasks with different amounts of parallelism, we propose AsyncAP, a lightweight approach that scales with the input length. Threads run asynchronously in AsyncAP, alleviating the bottleneck of thread block synchronization. The evaluation and detailed analysis demonstrate that AsyncAP achieves significant speedup or at least comparable performance under various scenarios for most of the applications. The future work aims to design automatic ways to generate optimizations and mappings between automata and computation resources for different GPUs. We will broaden the scope of this dissertation to domains such as graph computing
