    Asynchronous displays for multi-UV search tasks

    Synchronous video has long been the preferred mode for controlling remote robots with other modes such as asynchronous control only used when unavoidable as in the case of interplanetary robotics. We identify two basic problems for controlling multiple robots using synchronous displays: operator overload and information fusion. Synchronous displays from multiple robots can easily overwhelm an operator who must search video for targets. If targets are plentiful, the operator will likely miss targets that enter and leave unattended views while dealing with others that were noticed. The related fusion problem arises because robots' multiple fields of view may overlap forcing the operator to reconcile different views from different perspectives and form an awareness of the environment by "piecing them together". We have conducted a series of experiments investigating the suitability of asynchronous displays for multi-UV search. Our first experiments involved static panoramas in which operators selected locations at which robots halted and panned their camera to capture a record of what could be seen from that location. A subsequent experiment investigated the hypothesis that the relative performance of the panoramic display would improve as the number of robots was increased causing greater overload and fusion problems. In a subsequent Image Queue system we used automated path planning and also automated the selection of imagery for presentation by choosing a greedy selection of non-overlapping views. A fourth set of experiments used the SUAVE display, an asynchronous variant of the picture-in-picture technique for video from multiple UAVs. The panoramic displays which addressed only the overload problem led to performance similar to synchronous video while the Image Queue and SUAVE displays which addressed fusion as well led to improved performance on a number of measures.     Data-Efficient Policy Selection for Navigation in Partial Maps via Subgoal-Based Abstraction

    We present a novel approach for fast and reliable policy selection for navigation in partial maps. Leveraging the recent learning-augmented model-based Learning over Subgoals Planning (LSP) abstraction to plan, our robot reuses data collected during navigation to evaluate how well other alternative policies could have performed via a procedure we call offline alt-policy replay. Costs from offline alt-policy replay constrain policy selection among the LSP-based policies during deployment, allowing for improvements in convergence speed, cumulative regret and average navigation cost. With only limited prior knowledge about the nature of unseen environments, we achieve at least 67% and as much as 96% improvements on cumulative regret over the baseline bandit approach in our experiments in simulated maze and office-like environments.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Enabling Topological Planning with Monocular Vision

    Topological strategies for navigation meaningfully reduce the space of possible actions available to a robot, allowing use of heuristic priors or learning to enable computationally efficient, intelligent planning. The challenges in estimating structure with monocular SLAM in low texture or highly cluttered environments have precluded its use for topological planning in the past. We propose a robust sparse map representation that can be built with monocular vision and overcomes these shortcomings. Using a learned sensor, we estimate high-level structure of an environment from streaming images by detecting sparse vertices (e.g., boundaries of walls) and reasoning about the structure between them. We also estimate the known free space in our map, a necessary feature for planning through previously unknown environments. We show that our mapping technique can be used on real data and is sufficient for planning and exploration in simulated multi-agent search and learned subgoal planning applications.Comment: 7 pages (6 for content + 1 for references), 5 figures.     Robot Navigation in Human Environments

    For the near future, we envision service robots that will help us with everyday chores in home, office, and urban environments. These robots need to work in environments that were designed for humans and they have to collaborate with humans to fulfill their tasks. In this thesis, we propose new methods for communicating, transferring knowledge, and collaborating between humans and robots in four different navigation tasks. In the first application, we investigate how automated services for giving wayfinding directions can be improved to better address the needs of the human recipients. We propose a novel method based on inverse reinforcement learning that learns from a corpus of human-written route descriptions what amount and type of information a route description should contain. By imitating the human teachers' description style, our algorithm produces new route descriptions that sound similarly natural and convey similar information content, as we show in a user study. In the second application, we investigate how robots can leverage background information provided by humans for exploring an unknown environment more efficiently. We propose an algorithm for exploiting user-provided information such as sketches or floor plans by combining a global exploration strategy based on the solution of a traveling salesman problem with a local nearest-frontier-first exploration scheme. Our experiments show that the exploration tours are significantly shorter and that our system allows the user to effectively select the areas that the robot should explore. In the second part of this thesis, we focus on humanoid robots in home and office environments. The human-like body plan allows humanoid robots to navigate in environments and operate tools that were designed for humans, making humanoid robots suitable for a wide range of applications. As localization and mapping are prerequisites for all navigation tasks, we first introduce a novel feature descriptor for RGB-D sensor data and integrate this building block into an appearance-based simultaneous localization and mapping system that we adapt and optimize for the usage on humanoid robots. Our optimized system is able to track a real Nao humanoid robot more accurately and more robustly than existing approaches. As the third application, we investigate how humanoid robots can cover known environments efficiently with their camera, for example for inspection or search tasks. We extend an existing next-best-view approach by integrating inverse reachability maps, allowing us to efficiently sample and check collision-free full-body poses. Our approach enables the robot to inspect as much of the environment as possible. In our fourth application, we extend the coverage scenario to environments that also include articulated objects that the robot has to actively manipulate to uncover obstructed regions. We introduce algorithms for navigation subtasks that run highly parallelized on graphics processing units for embedded devices. Together with a novel heuristic for estimating utility maps, our system allows to find high-utility camera poses for efficiently covering environments with articulated objects. All techniques presented in this thesis were implemented in software and thoroughly evaluated in user studies, simulations, and experiments in both artificial and real-world environments. Our approaches advance the state of the art towards universally usable robots in everyday environments.Roboternavigation in menschlichen Umgebungen In naher Zukunft erwarten wir Serviceroboter, die uns im Haushalt, im Büro und in der Stadt alltägliche Arbeiten abnehmen. Diese Roboter müssen in für Menschen gebauten Umgebungen zurechtkommen und sie müssen mit Menschen zusammenarbeiten um ihre Aufgaben zu erledigen. In dieser Arbeit schlagen wir neue Methoden für die Kommunikation, Wissenstransfer und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Menschen und Robotern bei Navigationsaufgaben in vier Anwendungen vor. In der ersten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie automatisierte Dienste zur Generierung von Wegbeschreibungen verbessert werden können, um die Beschreibungen besser an die Bedürfnisse der Empfänger anzupassen. Wir schlagen eine neue Methode vor, die inverses bestärkendes Lernen nutzt, um aus einem Korpus von von Menschen geschriebenen Wegbeschreibungen zu lernen, wie viel und welche Art von Information eine Wegbeschreibung enthalten sollte. Indem unser Algorithmus den Stil der Wegbeschreibungen der menschlichen Lehrer imitiert, kann der Algorithmus neue Wegbeschreibungen erzeugen, die sich ähnlich natürlich anhören und einen ähnlichen Informationsgehalt vermitteln, was wir in einer Benutzerstudie zeigen. In der zweiten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie Roboter von Menschen bereitgestellte Hintergrundinformationen nutzen können, um eine bisher unbekannte Umgebung schneller zu erkunden. Wir schlagen einen Algorithmus vor, der Hintergrundinformationen wie Gebäudegrundrisse oder Skizzen nutzt, indem er eine globale Explorationsstrategie basierend auf der Lösung eines Problems des Handlungsreisenden kombiniert mit einer lokalen Explorationsstrategie. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass die Erkundungstouren signifikant kürzer werden und dass der Benutzer mit unserem System effektiv die zu erkundenden Regionen spezifizieren kann. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit konzentriert sich auf humanoide Roboter in Umgebungen zu Hause und im Büro. Der menschenähnliche Körperbau ermöglicht es humanoiden Robotern, in Umgebungen zu navigieren und Werkzeuge zu benutzen, die für Menschen gebaut wurden, wodurch humanoide Roboter für vielfältige Aufgaben einsetzbar sind. Da Lokalisierung und Kartierung Grundvoraussetzungen für alle Navigationsaufgaben sind, führen wir zunächst einen neuen Merkmalsdeskriptor für RGB-D-Sensordaten ein und integrieren diesen Baustein in ein erscheinungsbasiertes simultanes Lokalisierungs- und Kartierungsverfahren, das wir an die Besonderheiten von humanoiden Robotern anpassen und optimieren. Unser System kann die Position eines realen humanoiden Roboters genauer und robuster verfolgen, als es mit existierenden Ansätzen möglich ist. Als dritte Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie humanoide Roboter bekannte Umgebungen effizient mit ihrer Kamera abdecken können, beispielsweise zu Inspektionszwecken oder zum Suchen eines Gegenstands. Wir erweitern ein bestehendes Verfahren, das die nächstbeste Beobachtungsposition berechnet, durch inverse Erreichbarkeitskarten, wodurch wir kollisionsfreie Ganzkörperposen effizient generieren und prüfen können. Unser Ansatz ermöglicht es dem Roboter, so viel wie möglich von der Umgebung zu untersuchen. In unserer vierten Anwendung erweitern wir dieses Szenario um Umgebungen, die auch bewegbare Gegenstände enthalten, die der Roboter aktiv bewegen muss um verdeckte Regionen zu sehen. Wir führen Algorithmen für Teilprobleme ein, die hoch parallelisiert auf Grafikkarten von eingebetteten Systemen ausgeführt werden. Zusammen mit einer neuen Heuristik zur Schätzung von Nutzenkarten ermöglicht dies unserem System Beobachtungspunkte mit hohem Nutzen zu finden, um Umgebungen mit bewegbaren Objekten effizient zu inspizieren. Alle vorgestellten Techniken wurden in Software implementiert und sorgfältig evaluiert in Benutzerstudien, Simulationen und Experimenten in künstlichen und realen Umgebungen. Unsere Verfahren bringen den Stand der Forschung voran in Richtung universell einsetzbarer Roboter in alltäglichen Umgebungen

    Forming Human-Robot Teams Across Time and Space

    NASA pushes telerobotics to distances that span the Solar System. At this scale, time of flight for communication is limited by the speed of light, inducing long time delays, narrow bandwidth and the real risk of data disruption. NASA also supports missions where humans are in direct contact with robots during extravehicular activity (EVA), giving a range of zero to hundreds of millions of miles for NASA s definition of "tele". . Another temporal variable is mission phasing. NASA missions are now being considered that combine early robotic phases with later human arrival, then transition back to robot only operations. Robots can preposition, scout, sample or construct in advance of human teammates, transition to assistant roles when the crew are present, and then become care-takers when the crew returns to Earth. This paper will describe advances in robot safety and command interaction approaches developed to form effective human-robot teams, overcoming challenges of time delay and adapting as the team transitions from robot only to robots and crew. The work is predicated on the idea that when robots are alone in space, they are still part of a human-robot team acting as surrogates for people back on Earth or in other distant locations. Software, interaction modes and control methods will be described that can operate robots in all these conditions. A novel control mode for operating robots across time delay was developed using a graphical simulation on the human side of the communication, allowing a remote supervisor to drive and command a robot in simulation with no time delay, then monitor progress of the actual robot as data returns from the round trip to and from the robot. Since the robot must be responsible for safety out to at least the round trip time period, the authors developed a multi layer safety system able to detect and protect the robot and people in its workspace. This safety system is also running when humans are in direct contact with the robot, so it involves both internal fault detection as well as force sensing for unintended external contacts. The designs for the supervisory command mode and the redundant safety system will be described. Specific implementations were developed and test results will be reported. Experiments were conducted using terrestrial analogs for deep space missions, where time delays were artificially added to emulate the longer distances found in space

    Robotic Follow-Up for Human Exploration

    We are studying how "robotic follow-up" can improve future planetary exploration. Robotic follow-up, which we define as augmenting human field work with subsequent robot activity, is a field exploration technique designed to increase human productivity and science return. To better understand the benefits, requirements, limitations and risks associated with this technique, we are conducting analog field tests with human and robot teams at the Haughton Crater impact structure on Devon Island, Canada. In this paper, we discuss the motivation for robotic follow-up, describe the scientific context and system design for our work, and present results and lessons learned from field testing

    Field Testing of Utility Robots for Lunar Surface Operations

    Since 2004, NASA has been working to return to the Moon. In contrast to the Apollo missions, two key objectives of the current exploration program is to establish significant infrastructure and an outpost. Achieving these objectives will enable long-duration stays and long-distance exploration of the Moon. To do this, robotic systems will be needed to perform tasks which cannot, or should not, be performed by crew alone. In this paper, we summarize our work to develop "utility robots" for lunar surface operations, present results and lessons learned from field testing, and discuss directions for future research

    Asynchronous control with ATR for large robot teams

    In this paper, we discuss and investigate the advantages of an asynchronous display, called "image queue", tested for an urban search and rescue foraging task. The image queue approach mines video data to present the operator with a relevant and comprehensive view of the environment by selecting a small number of images that together cover large portions of the area searched. This asynchronous approach allows operators to search through a large amount of data gathered by autonomous robot teams, and allows comprehensive and scalable displays to obtain a network-centric perspective for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). In the reported experiment automatic target recognition (ATR) was used to augment utilities based on visual coverage in selecting imagery for presentation to the operator. In the cued condition a box was drawn in the region in which a possible target was detected. In the no-cue condition no box was drawn although the target detection probability continued to play a role in the selection of imagery. We found that operators using the image queue displays missed fewer victims and relied on teleoperation less often than those using streaming video. Image queue users in the no-cue condition did better in avoiding false alarms and reported lower workload than those in the cued condition.     Intelligence for Human-Assistant Planetary Surface Robots

    The central premise in developing effective human-assistant planetary surface robots is that robotic intelligence is needed. The exact type, method, forms and/or quantity of intelligence is an open issue being explored on the ERA project, as well as others. In addition to field testing, theoretical research into this area can help provide answers on how to design future planetary robots. Many fundamental intelligence issues are discussed by Murphy [2], including (a) learning, (b) planning, (c) reasoning, (d) problem solving, (e) knowledge representation, and (f) computer vision (stereo tracking, gestures). The new "social interaction/emotional" form of intelligence that some consider critical to Human Robot Interaction (HRI) can also be addressed by human assistant planetary surface robots, as human operators feel more comfortable working with a robot when the robot is verbally (or even physically) interacting with them. Arkin [3] and Murphy are both proponents of the hybrid deliberative-reasoning/reactive-execution architecture as the best general architecture for fully realizing robot potential, and the robots discussed herein implement a design continuously progressing toward this hybrid philosophy. The remainder of this chapter will describe the challenges associated with robotic assistance to astronauts, our general research approach, the intelligence incorporated into our robots, and the results and lessons learned from over six years of testing human-assistant mobile robots in field settings relevant to planetary exploration. The chapter concludes with some key considerations for future work in this area
