    Entity-Oriented Search

    This open access book covers all facets of entity-oriented search—where “search” can be interpreted in the broadest sense of information access—from a unified point of view, and provides a coherent and comprehensive overview of the state of the art. It represents the first synthesis of research in this broad and rapidly developing area. Selected topics are discussed in-depth, the goal being to establish fundamental techniques and methods as a basis for future research and development. Additional topics are treated at a survey level only, containing numerous pointers to the relevant literature. A roadmap for future research, based on open issues and challenges identified along the way, rounds out the book. The book is divided into three main parts, sandwiched between introductory and concluding chapters. The first two chapters introduce readers to the basic concepts, provide an overview of entity-oriented search tasks, and present the various types and sources of data that will be used throughout the book. Part I deals with the core task of entity ranking: given a textual query, possibly enriched with additional elements or structural hints, return a ranked list of entities. This core task is examined in a number of different variants, using both structured and unstructured data collections, and numerous query formulations. In turn, Part II is devoted to the role of entities in bridging unstructured and structured data. Part III explores how entities can enable search engines to understand the concepts, meaning, and intent behind the query that the user enters into the search box, and how they can provide rich and focused responses (as opposed to merely a list of documents)—a process known as semantic search. The final chapter concludes the book by discussing the limitations of current approaches, and suggesting directions for future research. Researchers and graduate students are the primary target audience of this book. A general background in information retrieval is sufficient to follow the material, including an understanding of basic probability and statistics concepts as well as a basic knowledge of machine learning concepts and supervised learning algorithms

    Ephemeral relevance and user activities in a search session

    We study relevance judgment and user activities in a search session. We focus on ephemeral relevance—a contextual measurement regarding the amount of useful information a searcher acquired from a clicked result at a particular time—and two primary types of search activities—query reformulation and click. The purpose of the study is both explanatory and practical. First, we examine the influence of different factors on ephemeral relevance and user activities in a search session. Second, we leverage short-term search history and implicit feedback in a session to predict ephemeral relevance and future search activities. The main findings include: 1. As a contextual usefulness measurement, ephemeral relevance differs from both topical relevance judgment and context-independent usefulness assessment. We show ephemeral relevance significantly relates to a wide range of factors, including topical relevance, novelty, understandability, reliability, effort spent, and search task. The difference between ephemeral relevance and context-independent usefulness assessment is linked to judgment criteria, novelty, effort spent, and changes in user’s perceptions of a search result. 2. Ephemeral relevance can be predicted accurately using implicit feedback signals without any manual explicit judgments. We generalize existing implicit feedback methods from using information related to a single result to those based on user activities in a whole session, achieving a correlation as high as 0.5 between the predicted and real judgments. 3. We show choices of word changes in query reformulation and click decisions significantly relate to recent search history, such as the contents and effectiveness of previous search queries, the contents of the results viewed and clicked in previous searches, etc. 4. Leveraging short-term search history in a session and other information, we can predict word changes in query reformulation and click decisions with different levels of accuracies. These findings help disclose and explain the dynamics of relevance and user activities in a search session. The developed techniques provide effective support for developing interactive IR systems

    Personalized information retrieval based on time-sensitive user profile

    Les moteurs de recherche, largement utilisés dans différents domaines, sont devenus la principale source d'information pour de nombreux utilisateurs. Cependant, les Systèmes de Recherche d'Information (SRI) font face à de nouveaux défis liés à la croissance et à la diversité des données disponibles. Un SRI analyse la requête soumise par l'utilisateur et explore des collections de données de nature non structurée ou semi-structurée (par exemple : texte, image, vidéo, page Web, etc.) afin de fournir des résultats qui correspondent le mieux à son intention et ses intérêts. Afin d'atteindre cet objectif, au lieu de prendre en considération l'appariement requête-document uniquement, les SRI s'intéressent aussi au contexte de l'utilisateur. En effet, le profil utilisateur a été considéré dans la littérature comme l'élément contextuel le plus important permettant d'améliorer la pertinence de la recherche. Il est intégré dans le processus de recherche d'information afin d'améliorer l'expérience utilisateur en recherchant des informations spécifiques. Comme le facteur temps a gagné beaucoup d'importance ces dernières années, la dynamique temporelle est introduite pour étudier l'évolution du profil utilisateur qui consiste principalement à saisir les changements du comportement, des intérêts et des préférences de l'utilisateur en fonction du temps et à actualiser le profil en conséquence. Les travaux antérieurs ont distingué deux types de profils utilisateurs : les profils à court-terme et ceux à long-terme. Le premier type de profil est limité aux intérêts liés aux activités actuelles de l'utilisateur tandis que le second représente les intérêts persistants de l'utilisateur extraits de ses activités antérieures tout en excluant les intérêts récents. Toutefois, pour les utilisateurs qui ne sont pas très actifs dont les activités sont peu nombreuses et séparées dans le temps, le profil à court-terme peut éliminer des résultats pertinents qui sont davantage liés à leurs intérêts personnels. Pour les utilisateurs qui sont très actifs, l'agrégation des activités récentes sans ignorer les intérêts anciens serait très intéressante parce que ce type de profil est généralement en évolution au fil du temps. Contrairement à ces approches, nous proposons, dans cette thèse, un profil utilisateur générique et sensible au temps qui est implicitement construit comme un vecteur de termes pondérés afin de trouver un compromis en unifiant les intérêts récents et anciens. Les informations du profil utilisateur peuvent être extraites à partir de sources multiples. Parmi les méthodes les plus prometteuses, nous proposons d'utiliser, d'une part, l'historique de recherche, et d'autre part les médias sociaux. En effet, les données de l'historique de recherche peuvent être extraites implicitement sans aucun effort de l'utilisateur et comprennent les requêtes émises, les résultats correspondants, les requêtes reformulées et les données de clics qui ont un potentiel de retour de pertinence/rétroaction. Par ailleurs, la popularité des médias sociaux permet d'en faire une source inestimable de données utilisées par les utilisateurs pour exprimer, partager et marquer comme favori le contenu qui les intéresse. En premier lieu, nous avons modélisé le profil utilisateur utilisateur non seulement en fonction du contenu de ses activités mais aussi de leur fraîcheur en supposant que les termes utilisés récemment dans les activités de l'utilisateur contiennent de nouveaux intérêts, préférences et pensées et doivent être pris en considération plus que les anciens intérêts surtout que de nombreux travaux antérieurs ont prouvé que l'intérêt de l'utilisateur diminue avec le temps. Nous avons modélisé le profil utilisateur sensible au temps en fonction d'un ensemble de données collectées de Twitter (un réseau social et un service de microblogging) et nous l'avons intégré dans le processus de reclassement afin de personnaliser les résultats standards en fonction des intérêts de l'utilisateur.En second lieu, nous avons étudié la dynamique temporelle dans le cadre de la session de recherche où les requêtes récentes soumises par l'utilisateur contiennent des informations supplémentaires permettant de mieux expliquer l'intention de l'utilisateur et prouvant qu'il n'a pas trouvé les informations recherchées à partir des requêtes précédentes.Ainsi, nous avons considéré les interactions récentes et récurrentes au sein d'une session de recherche en donnant plus d'importance aux termes apparus dans les requêtes récentes et leurs résultats cliqués. Nos expérimentations sont basés sur la tâche Session TREC 2013 et la collection ClueWeb12 qui ont montré l'efficacité de notre approche par rapport à celles de l'état de l'art. Au terme de ces différentes contributions et expérimentations, nous prouvons que notre modèle générique de profil utilisateur sensible au temps assure une meilleure performance de personnalisation et aide à analyser le comportement des utilisateurs dans les contextes de session de recherche et de médias sociaux.Recently, search engines have become the main source of information for many users and have been widely used in different fields. However, Information Retrieval Systems (IRS) face new challenges due to the growth and diversity of available data. An IRS analyses the query submitted by the user and explores collections of data with unstructured or semi-structured nature (e.g. text, image, video, Web page etc.) in order to deliver items that best match his/her intent and interests. In order to achieve this goal, we have moved from considering the query-document matching to consider the user context. In fact, the user profile has been considered, in the literature, as the most important contextual element which can improve the accuracy of the search. It is integrated in the process of information retrieval in order to improve the user experience while searching for specific information. As time factor has gained increasing importance in recent years, the temporal dynamics are introduced to study the user profile evolution that consists mainly in capturing the changes of the user behavior, interests and preferences, and updating the profile accordingly. Prior work used to discern short-term and long-term profiles. The first profile type is limited to interests related to the user's current activities while the second one represents user's persisting interests extracted from his prior activities excluding the current ones. However, for users who are not very active, the short-term profile can eliminate relevant results which are more related to their personal interests. This is because their activities are few and separated over time. For users who are very active, the aggregation of recent activities without ignoring the old interests would be very interesting because this kind of profile is usually changing over time. Unlike those approaches, we propose, in this thesis, a generic time-sensitive user profile that is implicitly constructed as a vector of weighted terms in order to find a trade-off by unifying both current and recurrent interests. User profile information can be extracted from multiple sources. Among the most promising ones, we propose to use, on the one hand, searching history. Data from searching history can be extracted implicitly without any effort from the user and includes issued queries, their corresponding results, reformulated queries and click-through data that has relevance feedback potential. On the other hand, the popularity of Social Media makes it as an invaluable source of data used by users to express, share and mark as favorite the content that interests them. First, we modeled a user profile not only according to the content of his activities but also to their freshness under the assumption that terms used recently in the user's activities contain new interests, preferences and thoughts and should be considered more than old interests. In fact, many prior works have proved that the user interest is decreasing as time goes by. In order to evaluate the time-sensitive user profile, we used a set of data collected from Twitter, i.e a social networking and microblogging service. Then, we apply our re-ranking process to a Web search system in order to adapt the user's online interests to the original retrieved results. Second, we studied the temporal dynamics within session search where recent submitted queries contain additional information explaining better the user intent and prove that the user hasn't found the information sought from previous submitted ones. We integrated current and recurrent interactions within a unique session model giving more importance to terms appeared in recently submitted queries and clicked results. We conducted experiments using the 2013 TREC Session track and the ClueWeb12 collection that showed the effectiveness of our approach compared to state-of-the-art ones. Overall, in those different contributions and experiments, we prove that our time-sensitive user profile insures better performance of personalization and helps to analyze user behavior in both session search and social media contexts

    Schooling experiences of children left behind in Zimbabwe by emigrating parents: Implications for inclusive education

    Since the year 2000, a deepening political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe has forced parents to emigrate en masse to regional and international destinations such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand respectively. Without guaranteed employment and with little knowledge of the education systems and the living conditions in the destination countries, most parents chose to initially emigrate on their own, settle down and later on send for their children. However, most of these children never joined their parents, owing to the various challenges that the majority of parents encountered in the diaspora: unemployment, lack of documentation, and poor living conditions. Against this background, this paper assesses experiences and challenges faced by the left-behind children (LBC) and explores these children’s perceptions of their interactions with teachers through inclusive education practices. A phenomenological research approach was adopted; in-depth interviews were used to collect data. The high schools were purposively sampled, one from a low-income area and the other from a high-income area in order to get a more pronounced picture of the experiences of LBC in the city. The results of the study indicate that LBC faced numerous challenges: excessive household chores, little help from guardians with homework, inadequate representation at school meetings, and non-payment of school expenses. Most children viewed their interaction with teachers as generally negative and reported that most of their needs were not met. The study recommends the crafting of inclusive education legislation for the country so that new vulnerabilities are holistically dealt with.Keywords: inclusive education; left-behind children (LBC); rights-based education; schooling experiences; vulnerability; Zimbabw

    Supporting cross-device web search with social navigation-based mobile touch interactions

    The wide adoption of smartphones eliminates the time and location barriers for people’s daily information access, but also limits users’ information exploration activities due to the small mobile screen size. Thus, cross-device web search, where people initialize information needs on one device but complete them on another device, is frequently observed in modern search engines, especially for exploratory information needs. This paper aims to support the cross-device web search, on top of the commonly used context-sensitive retrieval framework, for exploratory tasks. To better model users’ search context, our method not only utilizes the search history (query history and click-through) but also employs the mobile touch interactions (MTI) on mobile devices. To be more specific, we combine MTI’s ability of locating relevant subdocument content [10] with the idea of social navigation that aggregates MTIs from other users who visit the same page. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we designed a user study to collect cross-device web search logs on three different types of tasks from 24 participants and then compared our approach with two baselines: a traditional full text based relevance feedback approach and a self-MTI based subdocument relevance feedback approach. Our results show that the social navigation-based MTIs outperformed both baselines. A further analysis shows that the performance improvements are related to several factors, including the quality and quantity of click-through documents, task types and users’ search conditions

    Using natural language processing for question answering in closed and open domains

    With regard to the growth in the amount of social, environmental, and biomedical information available digitally, there is a growing need for Question Answering (QA) systems that can empower users to master this new wealth of information. Despite recent progress in QA, the quality of interpretation and extraction of the desired answer is not adequate. We believe that striving for higher accuracy in QA systems is subject to on-going research, i.e., it is better to have no answer is better than wrong answers. However, there are diverse queries, which the state of the art QA systems cannot interpret and answer properly. The problem of interpreting a question in a way that could preserve its syntactic-semantic structure is considered as one of the most important challenges in this area. In this work we focus on the problems of semantic-based QA systems and analyzing the effectiveness of NLP techniques, query mapping, and answer inferencing both in closed (first scenario) and open (second scenario) domains. For this purpose, the architecture of Semantic-based closed and open domain Question Answering System (hereafter “ScoQAS”) over ontology resources is presented with two different prototyping: Ontology-based closed domain and an open domain under Linked Open Data (LOD) resource. The ScoQAS is based on NLP techniques combining semantic-based structure-feature patterns for question classification and creating a question syntactic-semantic information structure (QSiS). The QSiS provides an actual potential by building constraints to formulate the related terms on syntactic-semantic aspects and generating a question graph (QGraph) which facilitates making inference for getting a precise answer in the closed domain. In addition, our approach provides a convenient method to map the formulated comprehensive information into SPARQL query template to crawl in the LOD resources in the open domain. The main contributions of this dissertation are as follows: 1. Developing ScoQAS architecture integrated with common and specific components compatible with closed and open domain ontologies. 2. Analysing user’s question and building a question syntactic-semantic information structure (QSiS), which is constituted by several processes of the methodology: question classification, Expected Answer Type (EAT) determination, and generated constraints. 3. Presenting an empirical semantic-based structure-feature pattern for question classification and generalizing heuristic constraints to formulate the relations between the features in the recognized pattern in terms of syntactical and semantical. 4. Developing a syntactic-semantic QGraph for representing core components of the question. 5. Presenting an empirical graph-based answer inference in the closed domain. In a nutshell, a semantic-based QA system is presented which provides some experimental results over the closed and open domains. The efficiency of the ScoQAS is evaluated using measures such as precision, recall, and F-measure on LOD challenges in the open domain. We focus on quantitative evaluation in the closed domain scenario. Due to the lack of predefined benchmark(s) in the first scenario, we define measures that demonstrate the actual complexity of the problem and the actual efficiency of the solutions. The results of the analysis corroborate the performance and effectiveness of our approach to achieve a reasonable accuracy.Con respecto al crecimiento en la cantidad de información social, ambiental y biomédica disponible digitalmente, existe una creciente necesidad de sistemas de la búsqueda de la respuesta (QA) que puedan ofrecer a los usuarios la gestión de esta nueva cantidad de información. A pesar del progreso reciente en QA, la calidad de interpretación y extracción de la respuesta deseada no es la adecuada. Creemos que trabajar para lograr una mayor precisión en los sistemas de QA es todavía un campo de investigación abierto. Es decir, es mejor no tener respuestas que tener respuestas incorrectas. Sin embargo, existen diversas consultas que los sistemas de QA en el estado del arte no pueden interpretar ni responder adecuadamente. El problema de interpretar una pregunta de una manera que podría preservar su estructura sintáctica-semántica es considerado como uno de los desafíos más importantes en esta área. En este trabajo nos centramos en los problemas de los sistemas de QA basados en semántica y en el análisis de la efectividad de las técnicas de PNL, y la aplicación de consultas e inferencia respuesta tanto en dominios cerrados (primer escenario) como abiertos (segundo escenario). Para este propósito, la arquitectura del sistema de búsqueda de respuestas en dominios cerrados y abiertos basado en semántica (en adelante "ScoQAS") sobre ontologías se presenta con dos prototipos diferentes: en dominio cerrado basado en el uso de ontologías y un dominio abierto dirigido a repositorios de Linked Open Data (LOD). El ScoQAS se basa en técnicas de PNL que combinan patrones de características de estructura semánticas para la clasificación de preguntas y la creación de una estructura de información sintáctico-semántica de preguntas (QSiS). El QSiS proporciona una manera la construcción de restricciones para formular los términos relacionados en aspectos sintáctico-semánticos y generar un grafo de preguntas (QGraph) el cual facilita derivar inferencias para obtener una respuesta precisa en el dominio cerrado. Además, nuestro enfoque proporciona un método adecuado para aplicar la información integral formulada en la plantilla de consulta SPARQL para navegar en los recursos LOD en el dominio abierto. Las principales contribuciones de este trabajo son los siguientes: 1. El desarrollo de la arquitectura ScoQAS integrada con componentes comunes y específicos compatibles con ontologías de dominio cerrado y abierto. 2. El análisis de la pregunta del usuario y la construcción de una estructura de información sintáctico-semántica de las preguntas (QSiS), que está constituida por varios procesos de la metodología: clasificación de preguntas, determinación del Tipo de Respuesta Esperada (EAT) y las restricciones generadas. 3. La presentación de un patrón empírico basado en la estructura semántica para clasificar las preguntas y generalizar las restricciones heurísticas para formular las relaciones entre las características en el patrón reconocido en términos sintácticos y semánticos. 4. El desarrollo de un QGraph sintáctico-semántico para representar los componentes centrales de la pregunta. 5. La presentación de la respuesta inferida a partir de un grafo empírico en el dominio cerrado. En pocas palabras, se presenta un sistema semántico de QA que proporciona algunos resultados experimentales sobre los dominios cerrados y abiertos. La eficiencia del ScoQAS se evalúa utilizando medidas tales como una precisión, cobertura y la medida-F en desafíos LOD para el dominio abierto. Para el dominio cerrado, nos centramos en la evaluación cuantitativa; su precisión se analiza en una ontología empresarial. La falta de un banco la pruebas predefinidas es uno de los principales desafíos de la evaluación en el primer escenario.     Taming the hashtag: universal sentiment, SPEQ-ing the truth, and structured opinion in social media

    Opinions are valuable, and with the advent of social media, plentiful. Opinions are not always intelligible, however. Therefore, many of the views of social media users are ignored. This dissertation seeks to confront the challenges associated with opinion mining and sentiment analysis by investigating three aspects of opinion expression and consumption in social media. The universality of opinion itself is explored through an innovative application of social science research in survey construction, semantic distance analysis, and corpus linguistics. Results include a universal taxonomy of 18 sentiment types shown to be portable across 15 languages. The universality of opinion processing is explored through a qualitative meta-synthesis (QMS) analysis of social psychology, opinion mining and sentiment analysis, and voting systems scholarship. Results include a comprehensive theoretical model of opinion processing: the States, Processes, Effects, and Quality (SPEQ) model for opinion mining and sentiment analysis. SPEQ defines seven states of opinion, six processes which govern the transitions between those states and five quality and integrity measures for the evaluation of those processes. Lastly, the concept of a structured opinion syntax is explored. Despite strong resentment to symbolic representations of meaning by subjects, learning and priming effects for both the encoding and decoding of structured opinion support the contention that such a syntax could be developed and used.
