    Soulful bodies and superflat temporalities: a nomadology of the otaku database of world history at the ends of history

    This thesis is a philosophical engagement with the popular, low, and vernacular theories of History performed and expressed within contemporary Japanese manga (‘comics’) and anime (‘limited animation’), and most importantly, in the global production and consumption of otaku (‘manga and anime fan’) cultural and media ecologies. My project is rooted in a reading of the post-structural theoretical inquiries of Gilles Deleuze in parallel with what media theorist McKenzie Wark calls ‘otaku philosophy’ to examine how both high and low theories articulate anxieties and fascinations with the global theoretical discourses on ‘the ends of History’ and the imminent demise of industrial modernity. The first portion of the thesis is dedicated to a reading of the Japanese counter-cultural manga movement called gekiga (‘dramatic pictures’). In traversing gekiga’s post-war lineages to its revival in the medievalism of otaku artists Miura Kentarƍ and Yukimura Makoto, the first part postulates on what an anti-modern, anti-historical approach – or what Deleuze and Guattari call a nomadology – might look and feel like as it is mediated in the manga form. The second portion of the thesis examines the way in which Japanese anime mobilises the philosophies of nomadology in its filmic form and transmedial properties. In a critical assessment of the anime works of the otaku-founded media corporation Type-Moon, this section explores the Fate series alongside Deleuzian film and media philosophies to explore the infinite potentialities and recursive limitations of otaku nomadologies as they materialise beyond the screen. By reassessing the rise of otaku culture as a vernacular, global, and cosmopolitan rise in the critique of modernity and History, this thesis hopes to explore how transcultural and transmedial fan philosophies of historicity, memory, and temporality can be recontextualised within current academic debates about the efficacy of post-national historiographic pedagogies explored in the fields of postcolonial studies, comparative studies, global studies, and media studies

    Ruinous Natures: The Approach of Social Timespace

    This Dissertation advances across three areas: first, a theory of social timespace that borrows from critical social theories, post-ontological systems theory, and literary critique; second, it proposes a revisioning of sociological ‘methods’ by an historical reproachment: how sociology is a method among others for the study of society and culture, what are called variously the social sciences, and how sociology also has a method of its own developed in the work of the first sociological institutions in the United States, Germany, and France, that is parallel to linguistic structuralism in the same historical period and has mostly been advanced outside the discipline in narrative and discourse analysis; third, the substantive matter of this dissertation concerns a shift in the sociology of the environment to a political ecology, and critique of the latter. The binding theoretic development, mode of analysis, and the object of a political ecology formed in environmental sociology, are configured under the singular term of socioanalysis. The technique of socioanalysis, its eco-environmental object, and theory implied by the practice of socioanalysis are the guiding proposition of this research

    Laws of the Sea assembles scholars from law, geography, anthropology, and environmental humanities to consider the possibilities of a critical ocean approach in legal studies. Unlike the United Nations’ monumental Convention on the Law of the Sea, which imagines one comprehensive constitutional framework for governing the ocean, Laws of the Sea approaches oceanic law in plural and dynamic ways. Critically engaging contemporary concerns about the fate of the ocean, the collection’s twelve chapters range from hydrothermal vents through the continental shelf and marine genetic resources to coastal communities in France, Sweden, Florida, and Indonesia. Documenting the longstanding binary of land and sea, the chapters pose a fundamental challenge to European law’s “terracentrism” and its pervasive influence on juridical modes of knowing and making the world. Together, the chapters ask: is contemporary Eurocentric law—and international law in particular—capable of moving away from its capitalist and colonial legacies, established through myriad oceanic abstractions and classifications, toward more amphibious legalities? Laws of the Sea will appeal to legal scholars, geographers, anthropologists, cultural and political theorists, as well as scholars in the environmental humanities, political ecology, ocean studies, and animal studies

    Where there are no Footprints: An Ethnography of Contemporary Art in Kolkata

    This dissertation is an ethnographic exploration of contemporary art in Kolkata. It closely follows several individual artists and art groups who endeavour to defy established conventions and create new works of art. Yet, confronted with a new work of art, a doubt sets in. Wasn’t this made before? Can we be sure that it’s not a copy? The doubt of novelty and originality has always troubled the visual arts, and was particularly pronounced in (post)colonial Calcutta, where works were condemned by some as belated repetitions of European modern art. Convictions of belatedness have been successfully debunked, but with the emergence of ‘contemporary’ art the doubt of novelty emerges yet again. To understand the predicament of artistic novelty this dissertation unfolds a cyclical ritual theory of contemporary art that includes the practices surrounding the artwork, while not forgetting the artwork itself – an analysis that involves the entire set of practices implicated in the production, exhibition, circulation, and preservation of art. This theory is subsequently applied to the field of contemporary art in Kolkata. The ethnographic chapters focus on the tension between artistic attempts to make new works of art and the various limitations that artists encounter; artists are not just caught up in artistic conventions, but are simultaneously impeded by limited economic means and trapped in a peripheral position where they always seem to lag behind, caught up in a city that doesn’t seem to live up to its own history. Yet, by making ambiguous works that resonate with the city in various ways, artists defy conventions, bypass limitations, and offer moments in which the world can be experienced anew
