Educating managers for business and government : a review of international experience

    Get PDF
Managers, in both the private and public sectors, are increasingly recognized as critical in the use of scarce resources for national development. There is no unanimity of opinion, however, regarding the models or approaches to management education that are most appropriate in different environmental settings. This report encompasses management education for each of the following groups: the managers and future managers of large scale enterprises; entrepreneurs and small businessmen; and public administrators. It reviews worldwide trends and developments in management education for lessons in such areas as curriculum design, research and teaching methodology, and institutional policies and administration. Experience is drawn from recognized universities, educational organizations, civil service institutes, and corporations in several major countries and regions of the world.ICT Policy and Strategies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Teaching and Learning,Curriculum&Instruction,Primary Education

International Production Networks And Changing Trade Patterns In East Asia The Case Of The Electronics Industry

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the spread of different international production networks in East Asia has affected the trade links of the region with the U.S. and Japan. We concentrate on one particular aspect, i.e. changes in the product composition of U.S. and Japanese electronics exports and imports to and from the East Asia region. We find that compared to the U.S. , Japan’s trade links with East Asia display a far greater diversity of the product groups involved. Of equal importance is a second finding: the trade balances of both countries with the region are radically different. A consistently high and growing trade deficit characterizes U.S. trade links with East Asia in the electronic industry. This is true even for computers and components, the two sectors where the U.S. has re-established itself during the last few years as an uncontested leader. This is in stark contrast to the situation in Japan, where a large and rapidly growing surplus characterizes its trade links with East Asia. Although this is now slowly changing as East Asia has become the most important source of Japanese electronics imports, there is reason to doubt whether this positive development is strong enough to reduce any time soon the asymmetric nature of Japan’s trade links with East Asia. These differences can only be partially attributed to traditional macroeconomic factors that are the focus of standard trade theory. In the paper, we show how the observed differences can be better explained by some peculiar features of the international production networks that American and Japanese firms have established in East Asia. The chain of causation appears to work both ways. Changes in the organization of international production have led to changes in the composition of bilateral trade flows. Such changes in international trade patterns, in turn, lead to further changes in the organization of international production.international trade; international investment; economic development; business strategies; networks; Japan; USA; Asia; electronics industry

Enterprise resource planning in construction: An evaluation of recent implementations

    Get PDF
In a large number of construction firms, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have replaced non-integrated information systems by integrated and maintainable software. The implementation of ERP systems in the construction industry is a difficult task. So far, ERP implementations have yielded more failures than successes in this industry. Our study tries to understand the underlying factors that cause success or failure of ERP in construction by analysing how ERP fits into the IT and business strategy of a firm. Empirical research was conducted by a multiple case study of three ERP-implementations in different business environments. Based on the results of this study, propositions are developed that relate factors for the success of ERP in construction to concepts of the existing literature on IT and strategy. These propositions are indicative, but present nevertheless a clear overall tren

Customer’s perception on effects of Market Liberalization on a Monopolistic Value Proposition in Portuguese Energy Sector

Since 2006, a change occurred in Portugal among energy providers due to the complete transition from a natural monopoly to a free market. The timeliness of the topic justifies a scientific analysis of the change in Energias de Portugal monopolistic strategy, company created in 1976 as result of the merger of key companies operating in the National Electricity System (SEN) and which had been nationalized in the previous years. This organization now operates in a market that is difficult to predict, having as main characteristic the turbulence caused by competition. Using value proposition canvas main concepts and adopting customers’ perception, this thesis will seek to identify the changes in one of the core departments of EDP affected by this change, sales. Whereas, this study has analysed a single company, the data for this research draw on eight qualitative semi-structured interviews with families, which are clients of company in study and information available online in the direction of obtaining the information that answers the topic of this thesis. After analysing value proposition map and customer segment it was confirmed an existence of relationship or fit, where a company manages to satisfy or answers most of customers’ segment sub-division’s needs. After profound investigation, it was possible to confirm that the new requirements of customers forced EDP to change its value proposition configuration in order to be able to survive on this new competitive free market. One of the interesting key findings was that economic values, such as price, were not considered as a major influential factor by the customers when choosing energy supplier, but brand heritage values were perceived as more meaningful.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

EDP inovação key performance indicators for innovation

CEMSThe work project follows the CEMS Business Project “Key Performance Indicators for Innovation”, for EDP Innovation. A thorough analysis of the company’s current KPIs and innovation strategy was developed, to assess their accuracy and sustainability in line with EDP-I’s competitors and relevant frameworks for innovation management. As a result of the insights gathered, disruptive KPIs were proposed to add to EDP-I’s Balanced Scorecard, and recommendations were suggested to improve the efficiency of the company’s innovation processes. In this work project, these recommendations are discussed and further elaborated to provide insights on how to better capture the value created

EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A – have the ambition to become “The Utility” in the energy landscape. EDP Internacional, a company from the group, is responsible to export EDP’s know-how in the form of energy consulting and training services across EDP outside consolidate markets, in both developed and emerging countries. Hence, the purpose of this work project is to assess whether South African energy market is attractive or not, and if yes, defining the Entry Mode strategy that maximizes EDPI returns on the investment. The study concludes that EDPI should enter South African Energy Efficiency market through a moderated-control strategy

Program on State Agency Remote Sensing Data Management (SARSDM)

A planning study for developing a Missouri natural resources information system (NRIS) that combines satellite-derived data and other information to assist in carrying out key state tasks was conducted. Four focal applications -- dam safety, ground water supply monitoring, municipal water supply monitoring, and Missouri River basin modeling were identified. Major contributions of the study are: (1) a systematic choice and analysis of a high priority application (water resources) for a Missouri, LANDSAT-based information system; (2) a system design and implementation plan, based on Missouri, but useful for many other states; (3) an analysis of system costs, component and personnel requirements, and scheduling; and (4) an assessment of deterrents to successful technological innovation of this type in state government, and a system management plan, based on this assessment, for overcoming these obstacles in Missouri

Exploring the potential of the living lab as an addition to the open innovation ecosystem of the the firm: a case study for EDP open innovation

    Get PDF
The firm of 2018 must not only remain agile in its innovative offerings, but must also recognise trends of peer-to-peer sharing, which begs the question: where do utility providers envision their business models amidst new demands to remain innovative in the new wave of collaborative consumption? If providing consumers with products via innovative services is the new currency upon which a firm is to be valued, then the extent of potential streams of innovation research available to a firm ought never be underestimated. Through a comprehensive analysis of the firm and the DNA of its open innovation ecosystem as well as a thorough investigation into the objectives driving Living Labs, we begin to discuss the feasibility of the Living Lab as a potential addition to the ecosystem of the firm in context
