Optimized HOG for on-road video based vehicle verification
Vision-based object detection from a moving platform becomes particularly challenging in the field of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In this context, onboard vision-based vehicle verification strategies become critical, facing challenges derived from the variability of vehicles appearance, illumination, and vehicle speed. In this paper, an optimized HOG configuration for onboard vehicle verification is proposed which not only considers its spatial and orientation resolution, but descriptor processing strategies and classification. An in-depth analysis of the optimal settings for HOG for onboard vehicle verification is presented, in the context of SVM classification with different kernels. In contrast to many existing approaches, the evaluation is realized in a public and heterogeneous database of vehicle and non-vehicle images in different areas of the road, rendering excellent verification rates that outperform other similar approaches in the literature
Drive Video Analysis for the Detection of Traffic Near-Miss Incidents
Because of their recent introduction, self-driving cars and advanced driver
assistance system (ADAS) equipped vehicles have had little opportunity to
learn, the dangerous traffic (including near-miss incident) scenarios that
provide normal drivers with strong motivation to drive safely. Accordingly, as
a means of providing learning depth, this paper presents a novel traffic
database that contains information on a large number of traffic near-miss
incidents that were obtained by mounting driving recorders in more than 100
taxis over the course of a decade. The study makes the following two main
contributions: (i) In order to assist automated systems in detecting near-miss
incidents based on database instances, we created a large-scale traffic
near-miss incident database (NIDB) that consists of video clip of dangerous
events captured by monocular driving recorders. (ii) To illustrate the
applicability of NIDB traffic near-miss incidents, we provide two primary
database-related improvements: parameter fine-tuning using various near-miss
scenes from NIDB, and foreground/background separation into motion
representation. Then, using our new database in conjunction with a monocular
driving recorder, we developed a near-miss recognition method that provides
automated systems with a performance level that is comparable to a human-level
understanding of near-miss incidents (64.5% vs. 68.4% at near-miss recognition,
61.3% vs. 78.7% at near-miss detection).Comment: Accepted to ICRA 201
A Novel Approach for Image Localization Using SVM Classifier and PSO Algorithm for Vehicle Tracking
In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for vehicular image localization, by incorporating the surveillance image object identification, using a local gradient model, and vehicle localization using the time of action. The aerial images of different traffic densities are obtained using the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) Descriptor. These features are acquired simply based on locations, angles, positions, and height of cameras set on the junction board. The localization of vehicular image is obtained based on the different times of action of the vehicles under consideration. Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier, as well as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), is also proposed in this work. Different experimental analyses are also performed to calculate the efficiency of optimization methods in the new proposed system. Vehicle subtype, make and model classification from side profile video
This paper addresses the challenging domain of vehicle classification from pole-mounted roadway cameras, specifically from side-profile views. A new public vehicle dataset is made available consisting of over 10000 side profile images (86 make/model and 9 sub-type classes). 5 state-of-the-art classifiers are applied to the dataset, with the best achieving high classification rates of 98.7% for sub-type and 99.7- 99.9% for make and model recognition, confirming the assertion made that single vehicle side profile images can be used for robust classification
Vehicle make and model recognition using bag of expressions
This article belongs to the Section Intelligent SensorsVehicle make and model recognition (VMMR) is a key task for automated vehicular surveillance (AVS) and various intelligent transport system (ITS) applications. In this paper, we propose and study the suitability of the bag of expressions (BoE) approach for VMMR-based applications. The method includes neighborhood information in addition to visual words. BoE improves the existing power of a bag of words (BOW) approach, including occlusion handling, scale invariance and view independence. The proposed approach extracts features using a combination of different keypoint detectors and a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) descriptor. An optimized dictionary of expressions is formed using visual words acquired through k-means clustering. The histogram of expressions is created by computing the occurrences of each expression in the image. For classification, multiclass linear support vector machines (SVM) are trained over the BoE-based features representation. The approach has been evaluated by applying cross-validation tests on the publicly available National Taiwan Ocean University-Make and Model Recognition (NTOU-MMR) dataset, and experimental results show that it outperforms recent approaches for VMMR. With multiclass linear SVM classification, promising average accuracy and processing speed are obtained using a combination of keypoint detectors with HOG-based BoE description, making it applicable to real-time VMMR systems.Muhammad Haroon Yousaf received funding from the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan
