    MIMO Radar Waveform Optimization With Prior Information of the Extended Target and Clutter

    The concept of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar allows each transmitting antenna element to transmit an arbitrary waveform. This provides extra degrees of freedom compared to the traditional transmit beamforming approach. It has been shown in the recent literature that MIMO radar systems have many advantages. In this paper, we consider the joint optimization of waveforms and receiving filters in the MIMO radar for the case of extended target in clutter. A novel iterative algorithm is proposed to optimize the waveforms and receiving filters such that the detection performance can be maximized. The corresponding iterative algorithms are also developed for the case where only the statistics or the uncertainty set of the target impulse response is available. These algorithms guarantee that the SINR performance improves in each iteration step. Numerical results show that the proposed methods have better SINR performance than existing design methods

    Physics Successfully Implements Lagrange Multiplier Optimization

    Optimization is a major part of human effort. While being mathematical, optimization is also built into physics. For example, physics has the principle of Least Action, the principle of Minimum Entropy Generation, and the Variational Principle. Physics also has physical annealing which, of course, preceded computational Simulated Annealing. Physics has the Adiabatic Principle, which in its quantum form is called Quantum Annealing. Thus, physical machines can solve the mathematical problem of optimization, including constraints. Binary constraints can be built into the physical optimization. In that case the machines are digital in the same sense that a flip-flop is digital. A wide variety of machines have had recent success at optimizing the Ising magnetic energy. We demonstrate in this paper that almost all those machines perform optimization according to the Principle of Minimum Entropy Generation as put forth by Onsager. Further, we show that this optimization is in fact equivalent to Lagrange multiplier optimization for constrained problems. We find that the physical gain coefficients which drive those systems actually play the role of the corresponding Lagrange Multipliers

    1-Bit processing based model predictive control for fractionated satellite missions

    In this thesis, a 1-bit processing based Model Predictive Control (OBMPC) structure is proposed for a fractionated satellite attitude control mission. Despite the appealing advantages of the MPC algorithm towards constrained MIMO control applications, implementing the MPC algorithm onboard a small satellite is certainly challenging due to the limited onboard resources. The proposed design is based on the 1-bit processing concept, which takes advantage of the affine relation between the 1-bit state feedback and multi-bit parameters to implement a multiplier free MPC controller. As multipliers are the major power consumer in online optimization, the OBMPC structure is proven to be more efficient in comparison to the conventional MPC implementation in term of power and circuit complexity. The system is in digital control nature, affected by quantization noise introduced by Δ∑ modulators. The stability issues and practical design criteria are also discussed in this work. Some other aspects are considered in this work to complete the control system. Firstly, the implementation of the OBMPC system relies on the 1-bit state feedbacks. Hence, 1-bit sensing components are needed to implement the OBMPC system. While the ∆∑ modulator based Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope is considered in this work, it is possible to implement this concept into other sensing components. Secondly, as the proposed attitude mission is based on the wireless inter-satellite link (ISL), a state estimator is required. However, conventional state estimators will once again introduce multi-bit signals, and compromise the simple, direct implementation of the OBMPC controller. Therefore, the 1-bit state estimator is also designed in this work to satisfy the requirements of the proposed fractionated attitude control mission. The simulation for the OBMPC is based on a 2U CubeSat model in a fractionated satellite structure, in which the payload and actuators are separated from the controller and controlled via the ISL. Matlab simulations and FPGA implementation based performance analysis shows that the OBMPC is feasible for fractionated satellite missions and is advantageous over the conventional MPC controllers

    A formal proof that bit allocation results hold for the entire class of paraunitary subband coders is presented. The problem of finding an optimal paraunitary subband coder, so as to maximize the coding gain of the system, is discussed. The bit allocation problem is analyzed for the case of the paraunitary tree-structured filter banks, such as those used for generating orthonormal wavelets. The even more general case of nonuniform filter banks is also considered. In all cases it is shown that under optimal bit allocation, the variances of the errors introduced by each of the quantizers have to be equal. Expressions for coding gains for these systems are derived

    A review is given of future power processing systems planned for the next 20 years, and the state-of-the-art of power processing design modeling and analysis techniques used to optimize power processing systems. A methodology of modeling and analysis of power processing equipment and systems has been formulated to fulfill future tradeoff studies and optimization requirements. Computer techniques were applied to simulate power processor performance and to optimize the design of power processing equipment. A program plan to systematically develop and apply the tools for power processing systems modeling and analysis is presented so that meaningful results can be obtained each year to aid the power processing system engineer and power processing equipment circuit designers in their conceptual and detail design and analysis tasks
