    Optimal trajectory generation with DMOC versus NTG : application to an underwater glider and a JPL aerobot.

    Optimal trajectory generation is an essential part for robotic explorers to execute the total exploration of deep oceans or outer space planets while curiosity of human and technology advancements of society both require robots to search for unknown territories efficiently and safely. As one of state-of-the-art optimal trajectory generation methodologies, Nonlinear Trajectory Generation (NTG) combines with B-spline, nonlinear programming, differential flatness technique to generate optimal trajectories for modelled mechanical systems. While Discrete Mechanics and Optimal Control (DMOC) is a newly proposed optimal control method for mechanical systems, it is based on direct discretization of Lagrange-d\u27Alembert principle. In this dissertation, NTG is utilized to generate trajectories for an underwater glider with a 3D B-spline ocean current model. The optimal trajectories are corresponding well with the Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS). Then NTG is utilized to generate 3D opportunistic trajectories for a JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Aerobot by taking advantage of wind velocity. Since both DMOC and NTG are methods which can generate optimal trajectories for mechanical systems, their differences in theory and application are investigated. In a simple ocean current example and a more complex ocean current model, DMOC with discrete Euler-Lagrange constraints generates local optimal solutions with different initial guesses while NTG is also generating similar solutions with more computation time and comparable energy consumption. DMOC is much easier to implement than NTG because in order to generate good solutions in NTG, its variables need to be correctly defined as B-spline variables with rightly-chosen orders. Finally, the MARIT (Multiple Air Robotics Indoor Testbed) is established with a Vicon 8i motion capture system. Six Mcam 2 cameras connected with a datastation are able to track real-time coordinates of a draganflyer helicopter. This motion capture system establishes a good foundation for future NTG and DMOC algorithms verifications

    Autonomous science for an ExoMars Rover-like mission

    In common with other Mars exploration missions, human supervision of Europe's ExoMars Rover will be mostly indirect via orbital relay spacecraft and thus far from immediate. The gap between issuing commands and witnessing the results of the consequent rover actions will typically be on the order of several hours or even sols. In addition, it will not be possible to observe the external environment at the time of action execution. This lengthens the time required to carry out scientific exploration and limits the mission's ability to respond quickly to favorable science events. To increase potential science return for such missions, it will be necessary to deploy autonomous systems that include science target selection and active data acquisition. In this work, we have developed and integrated technologies that we explored in previous studies and used the resulting test bed to demonstrate an autonomous, opportunistic science concept on a representative robotic platform. In addition to progressing the system design approach and individual autonomy components, we have introduced a methodology for autonomous science assessment based on terrestrial field science practice

    Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program

    The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL's) Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), responds to opportunities presented by NASA space missions and systems, and seeds commerical applications of the emerging robotics technology. The scope of the JPL Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program comprises three major segments of activity: NASA robotic systems for planetary exploration, robotic technology and terrestrial spin-offs, and technology for non-NASA sponsors. Significant technical achievements have been reached in each of these areas, including complete telerobotic system prototypes that have built and tested in realistic scenarios relevant to prospective users. In addition, the program has conducted complementary basic research and created innovative technology and terrestrial applications, as well as enabled a variety of commercial spin-offs

    MARIT : the design, implementation and trajectory generation with NTG for small UAVs.

    This dissertation is about building a Multiple Air Robotics Indoor Testbed (MARIT) for the purpose of developing and validating new methodologies for collaboration and cooperation between heterogeneous Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) as well as expandable to air-and-ground vehicle teams. It introduces a mathematical model for simulation and control of quadrotor Small UAVs (SUAVs). The model is subsequently applied to design an autonomous quadrotor control and tracking system. The dynamics model of quadrotor SUAV is used in several control designs. Each control design is simulated and compared. Based on the comparison, the superior control design is use for experimental flights. Two methods are used to evaluate the control and collect real-time data. The Nonlinear Trajectory Generation (NTG) software package is used to provide optimal trajectories for the SUAVs in MARIT. The dynamics model of the quadrotor is programmed in NTG and various obstacle avoidance scenarios are modeled to establish a platform for optimal trajectory generation for SUAVs. To challenge the capability of NTG for real-time trajectory generation, random obstacles and disturbances are simulated. Various flight simulations validate this trajectory tracking approach

    Management system for Unmanned Aircraft Systems teams

    This thesis investigates new schemes to improve the operability of heterogeneous Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) teams through the exploitation of inter-vehicular communications. Releasing ground links from unnecessary data exchanges saves resources (power, bandwidth, etc) and alleviates the inherent scalability problem resulting from the increase in the number of UAS to be controlled simultaneously. In first place, a framework to classify UAS according to their level of autonomy is presented along with efficient methodologies to assess the autonomy level of either individual or multiple UAS. An architecture based on an aerial Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is proposed for the management of the data exchange among all the vehicles in the team. A performance evaluation of the two most relevant MANET approaches for path discovery (namely, reactive and proactive) has been carried out by means of simulation of two well-known routing protocols: Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV). Several network configurations are generated to emulate different possible contingencies that might occur in real UAS team operations. Network topology evolution, vehicle flight dynamics and data traffic patterns are considered as input parameters to the simulation model. The analysis of the system behaviour for each possible network configuration is used to evaluate the appropriateness of both approaches in different mission scenarios. Alternative network solutions based on Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) for situations of intermittent connectivity and network partitioning are outlined. Finally, an assessment of the simulation results is presented along with a discussion about further research challenges
