After-sales services optimisation through dynamic opportunistic maintenance: a wind energy case study
After-sales maintenance services can be a very profitable source of incomes for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) due to the increasing interest of assets’ users on performance-based contracts. However, when it concerns the product value-adding process, OEM have traditionally been more focused on improving their production processes, rather than on complementing their products by offering after-sales services; consequently leading to difficulties in offering them efficiently. Furthermore, both due to the high uncertainty of the assets’ behaviour and the inherent challenges of managing the maintenance process (e.g. maintenance strategy to be followed or resources to be deployed), it is complex to make business out of the provision of after-sales services. With the aim of helping the business and maintenance decision makers at this point, this paper proposes a framework for optimising the incomes of after-sales maintenance services through: 1) implementing advanced multi-objective opportunistic maintenance strategies that sistematically consider the assets’ operational context in order to perform preventive maintenance during most favourable conditions, 2) considering the specific OEMs’ and users’ needs, and 3) assessing both internal and external uncertainties that might condition the after-sales services’ success. Testing in the incremental design and development of complex products
Testing is an important aspect of design and development which consumes significant time and resource in many companies. However, it has received less research attention than many other activities in product development, and especially, very few publications report empirical studies of engineering testing. Such studies are needed to establish the importance of testing and inform the development of pragmatic support methods. This paper combines insights from literature study with findings from three empirical studies of testing. The case studies concern incrementally developed complex products in the automotive domain. A description of testing practice as observed in these studies is provided, confirming that testing activities are used for multiple purposes depending on the context, and are intertwined with design from start to finish of the development process, not done after it as many models depict. Descriptive process models are developed to indicate some of the key insights, and opportunities for further research are suggested
Software Reliability Growth Model Based on Linear Failure Rate Distribution
A Non Homogenous Poisson Process (NHPP) with its mean value function generated by the cumulative distribution function of linear failure rate distribution is considered. It is modeled to assess the failure phenomenon of a developed software. When the failure data is in the form of number of failures in a given interval of time the model parameters are estimated by moment type estimation method and the performance of the model using three data sets is discussed in comparison with similar other models
Algorithms for advance bandwidth reservation in media production networks
Media production generally requires many geographically distributed actors (e.g., production houses, broadcasters, advertisers) to exchange huge amounts of raw video and audio data. Traditional distribution techniques, such as dedicated point-to-point optical links, are highly inefficient in terms of installation time and cost. To improve efficiency, shared media production networks that connect all involved actors over a large geographical area, are currently being deployed. The traffic in such networks is often predictable, as the timing and bandwidth requirements of data transfers are generally known hours or even days in advance. As such, the use of advance bandwidth reservation (AR) can greatly increase resource utilization and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the bandwidth scheduling problem, which takes into account the specific characteristics of media production networks, is presented. Two novel optimization algorithms based on this model are thoroughly evaluated and compared by means of in-depth simulation results
Context-Awareness Enhances 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing Reliability
The fifth generation (5G) mobile telecommunication network is expected to
support Multi- Access Edge Computing (MEC), which intends to distribute
computation tasks and services from the central cloud to the edge clouds.
Towards ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable and ultra-low-latency MEC services,
the current mobile network security architecture should enable a more
decentralized approach for authentication and authorization processes. This
paper proposes a novel decentralized authentication architecture that supports
flexible and low-cost local authentication with the awareness of context
information of network elements such as user equipment and virtual network
functions. Based on a Markov model for backhaul link quality, as well as a
random walk mobility model with mixed mobility classes and traffic scenarios,
numerical simulations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is able to
achieve a flexible balance between the network operating cost and the MEC

The economic impact of public beta testing: the power of word-of-mouth
The advent of the Internet has brought many fundamental changes to the way business is conducted. Among others, a growing number of software firms are relying on public beta testing to improve the quality of their products before release. While the benefits resulting from improved software reliability have been widely recognized, the influences of public beta testers on the diffusion of a new software product have not been documented. Through their word-of-mouth effect, public beta testers can speed up the diffusion of a software product after release, and hence increase the time-discounted revenue per adopter. In this research, we take into consideration both the reliability-side and the diffusion-side of the benefits, and develop methodologies to help firms decide the optimal number of public beta testers and the optimal duration of public beta testing. Numerical results show the firm’s profit can increase substantially by taking advantage of the world-of-mouth of public beta testers. This benefit is more significant if firms recruit beta testers from those who can benefit from a software product but cannot afford it

Cyber physical systems implementation for asset management improvement: A framework for the transition
Libro en Open AccessThe transformation of the industry due to recent technologies introduction is an evolving
process whose engines are competitiveness and sustainability, understood in its broadest sense (environmental,
economic and social). This process is facing, due to the current state of scientific and technological
development, a new challenge yet even more important: the transition from discrete technological solutions
that respond to isolated problems, to a global conception where the assets, plant, processes and engineering
systems are conceived, designed and operated as an integrated complex unit. This vision is evolving
besides a set of concepts that are, in some way, to guide this development: Smart Factories, Cyber-Physical
Systems, Factory of the Future or Industry 4.0, are examples. The full integration of the operation and
maintenance (O&M) processes in the production systems is a key topic within this new paradigm. Not
only that, this evolution necessarily results in the emergence of new processes and needs of O&M, i.e.
also, the O&M will undergo a profound transformation. The transition from actual isolated production
assets to such Industry 4.0 with CPS is far from easy. This document presents a proposal to develop such
transition adapting one iteration of the Model of Maintenance Management (MMM) integrated into
ISO 55000 to the complexity of incorporating “System of Systems” CPSs maintenance. It involves several
stages: identification, prioritization, risk management, planning, scheduling, execution, control, and
