Study of the urban evolution of Brasilia with the use of LANDSAT data

    Get PDF
The urban growth of Brasilia within the last ten years is analyzed with special emphasis on the utilization of remote sensing orbital data and automatic image processing. The urban spatial structure and the monitoring of its temporal changes were focused in a whole and dynamic way by the utilization of MSS-LANDSAT images for June 1973, 1978 and 1983. In order to aid data interpretation, a registration algorithm implemented at the Interactive Multispectral Image Analysis System (IMAGE-100) was utilized aiming at the overlap of multitemporal images. The utilization of suitable digital filters, combined with the images overlap, allowed a rapid identification of areas of possible urban growth and oriented the field work. The results obtained permitted an evaluation of the urban growth of Brasilia, taking as reference the proposed stated for the construction of the city

    Get PDF
A shuttle-attached manipulator is currently proposed as the payload-handling device for the space shuttle. Basic requirements for the manipulator involve length, force, compliance, and control. Approaches for studying control methods are presented and simulation methods are discussed. Basic details about the two earthbased manipulators selected for simulation experiments are related to the test methods. Preliminary data from one test are shown as an example of the direction of the testing. A computer-generated simulation is explained, and the relationship of the three simulations to the design problems is discussed

A Methodology for the Design of Robotic Hands with Multiple Fingers

    Get PDF
This paper presents a methodology that has been applied for a design process of anthropomorphic hands with multiple fingers. Biomechanical characteristics of human hand have been analysed so that ergonomic and anthropometric aspects have been used as fundamental references for obtaining grasping mechanisms. A kinematic analysis has been proposed to define the requirements for designing grasping functions. Selection of materials and actuators has been discussed too. This topic has been based on previous experiences with prototypes that have been developed at the Laboratory of Robotics and Mechatronics (LARM) of the University of Cassino. An example of the application of the proposed method has been presented for the design of a first prototype of LARM Hand

MPC for Robot Manipulators with Integral Sliding Modes Generation

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the design of a robust hierarchical multiloop control scheme to solve motion control problems for robot manipulators. The key elements of the proposed control approach are the inverse dynamics-based feedback linearized robotic multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system and the combination of a model predictive control (MPC) module with an integral sliding mode (ISM) controller. The ISM internal control loop has the role to compensate the matched uncertainties due to unmodeled dynamics, which are not rejected by the inverse dynamics approach. The external loop is closed relying on the MPC, which guarantees an optimal evolution of the controlled system while fulfiling state and input constraints. The motivation for using ISM, apart from its property of providing robustness to the scheme with respect to a wide class of uncertainties, is also given by its capability of enforcing sliding modes of the controlled system since the initial time instant, allowing one to solve the MPC optimization problem relying on a set of linearized decoupled single-input-single-output (SISO) systems that are not affected by uncertain terms. The proposal has been verified and validated in simulation, relying on a model of a COMAU Smart3-S2 industrial robot manipulator, identified on the basis of real data

Bio-inspired kinematical control of redundant robotic manipulators

    Get PDF
Purpose – This paper aims to propose an innovative kinematic control algorithm for redundant robotic manipulators. The algorithm takes advantage of a bio-inspired approach. Design/methodology/approach – A simplified two-degree-of-freedom model is presented to handle kinematic redundancy in the x-y plane; an extension to three-dimensional tracking tasks is presented as well. A set of sample trajectories was used to evaluate the performances of the proposed algorithm. Findings – The results from the simulations confirm the continuity and accuracy of generated joint profiles for given end-effector trajectories as well as algorithm robustness, singularity and self-collision avoidance. Originality/value – This paper shows how to control a redundant robotic arm by applying human upper arm-inspired concept of inter-joint dependency

A robust MPC/ISM hierarchical multi-loop control scheme for robot manipulators

In this paper, we propose a robust hierarchical multi-loop control scheme aimed at solving motion control problems for robot manipulators. The kernel of the proposed control scheme is the inverse dynamics-based feedback linearized robotic MIMO system. A first loop is closed relying on an Integral Sliding Mode (ISM) controller, so that matched disturbances and uncertain terms due to unmodelled dynamics, which are not rejected by the inverse dynamics approach, are suitably compensated. An external loop based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) optimizes the evolution of the controlled system in the respect of state and input constraints. The motivation for using ISM, apart from its property of providing robustness to the scheme in front of a significant class of uncertainties, is also given by its capability of enforcing sliding modes of the controlled system since the initial time instant, which is a clear advantage in the considered case, allowing one to solve the model predictive control optimization problem relying on a set of linearized decoupled SISO systems which are not affected by uncertain terms. As a consequence, a standard MPC can be used and the resulting control scheme is characterized by a low computational load with respect to conventional nonlinear robust solutions. The verification and the validation of our proposal have been carried out with satisfactory results in simulation, relying on a model of an industrial robot manipulator with injected noise, to better emulate a realistic set up. Both the model and the noise have been identified on the basis of real data. ©2013 IEEE

Tele-existence is an advanced type of teleoperation system that enables a human operator at the controls to perform remote manipulation tasks dexterously with the feeling that he or she exists in the remote anthropomorphic robot in the remote environment. The concept of a tele-existence is presented, the principle of the tele-existence display method is explained, some of the prototype systems are described, and its space application is discussed

    Telepresence and telerobotics

The capability for a single operator to simultaneously control complex remote multi degree of freedom robotic arms and associated dextrous end effectors is being developed. An optimal solution within the realm of current technology, can be achieved by recognizing that: (1) machines/computer systems are more effective than humans when the task is routine and specified, and (2) humans process complex data sets and deal with the unpredictable better than machines. These observations lead naturally to a philosophy in which the human's role becomes a higher level function associated with planning, teaching, initiating, monitoring, and intervening when the machine gets into trouble, while the machine performs the codifiable tasks with deliberate efficiency. This concept forms the basis for the integration of man and telerobotics, i.e., robotics with the operator in the control loop. The concept of integration of the human in the loop and maximizing the feed-forward and feed-back data flow is referred to as telepresence
