    Creating a Relational Distributed Object Store

    In and of itself, data storage has apparent business utility. But when we can convert data to information, the utility of stored data increases dramatically. It is the layering of relation atop the data mass that is the engine for such conversion. Frank relation amongst discrete objects sporadically ingested is rare, making the process of synthesizing such relation all the more challenging, but the challenge must be met if we are ever to see an equivalent business value for unstructured data as we already have with structured data. This paper describes a novel construct, referred to as a relational distributed object store (RDOS), that seeks to solve the twin problems of how to persistently and reliably store petabytes of unstructured data while simultaneously creating and persisting relations amongst billions of objects.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    SemTree: An index for supporting semantic retrieval of documents

    In this paper, we propose SemTree, a novel semantic index for supporting retrieval of information from huge amount of document collections, assuming that semantics of a document can be effectively expressed by a set of (subject, predicate, object) statements as in the RDF model. A distributed version of KD-Tree has been then adopted for providing a scalable solution to the document indexing, leveraging the mapping of triples in a vectorial space. We investigate the feasibility of our approach in a real case study, considering the problem of finding inconsistencies in documents related to software requirements and report some preliminary experimental results

    Semantic Support for Log Analysis of Safety-Critical Embedded Systems

    Testing is a relevant activity for the development life-cycle of Safety Critical Embedded systems. In particular, much effort is spent for analysis and classification of test logs from SCADA subsystems, especially when failures occur. The human expertise is needful to understand the reasons of failures, for tracing back the errors, as well as to understand which requirements are affected by errors and which ones will be affected by eventual changes in the system design. Semantic techniques and full text search are used to support human experts for the analysis and classification of test logs, in order to speedup and improve the diagnosis phase.     Lanes. A lightweigth overlay for service discovery in mobile ad hoc networks

    The ability to discover services offered in a mobile ad hoc network is the major prerequisite for effective usability of these networks. Unfortunately, existing approaches to service trading are not well suited for these highly dynamic topologies since they either rely on centralized servers or on resource-consuming query flooding. Application layer overlays seem to be a more promising approach. However, existing solutions like the Content-Addressable Network (CAN) are especially designed for internet based peer-to-peer networks yielding structural conditions that are far too complex for ad hoc networks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a more lightweight overlay structure: lanes. We present algorithms to correct and optimize its structure in case of topology changes and show how it enables the trading of services specified by arbitrary descriptions
