    Fault diagnosis method for energy storage mechanism of high voltage circuit breaker based on CNN characteristic matrix constructed by sound-vibration signal

    Aiming at the problem that some traditional high voltage circuit breaker fault diagnosis methods were over-dependent on subjective experience, the accuracy was not very high and the generalization ability was poor, a fault diagnosis method for energy storage mechanism of high voltage circuit breaker, which based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) characteristic matrix constructed by sound-vibration signal ,was proposed. In this paper, firstly, the morphological filtering was used for background noise cancellation of sound signal, and the time scale alignment method based on kurtosis and envelope similarity were proposed to ensure the synchronism of the sound-vibration signal. Secondly, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to construct two-dimensional image characteristic matrix for the expanded sound-vibration signal. Finally, the characteristic matrix was trained by utilizing CNN. Local Response Normalization (LRN) and core function decorrelation were utilized to improve the structure of CNN model, which reduced the bad impact of large data fluctuation of energy storage process on the diagnostic accuracy of circuit breaker energy storage mechanism. Compared with the traditional method, the proposed method has obvious advantages, whose total accurate rate up to 98.2 % and generalization performance is excellent

    Space station common module network topology and hardware development

    Conceptual space station common module power management and distribution (SSM/PMAD) network layouts and detailed network evaluations were developed. Individual pieces of hardware to be developed for the SSM/PMAD test bed were identified. A technology assessment was developed to identify pieces of equipment requiring development effort. Equipment lists were developed from the previously selected network schematics. Additionally, functional requirements for the network equipment as well as other requirements which affected the suitability of specific items for use on the Space Station Program were identified. Assembly requirements were derived based on the SSM/PMAD developed requirements and on the selected SSM/PMAD network concepts. Basic requirements and simplified design block diagrams are included. DC remote power controllers were successfully integrated into the DC Marshall Space Flight Center breadboard. Two DC remote power controller (RPC) boards experienced mechanical failure of UES 706 stud-mounted diodes during mechanical installation of the boards into the system. These broken diodes caused input to output shorting of the RPC's. The UES 706 diodes were replaced on these RPC's which eliminated the problem. The DC RPC's as existing in the present breadboard configuration do not provide ground fault protection because the RPC was designed to only switch the hot side current. If ground fault protection were to be implemented, it would be necessary to design the system so the RPC switched both the hot and the return sides of power

The MOD-OA was designed and built to obtain operation and performance data and experience in utility environments. The project requirements, approach, system description, design requirements, design, analysis, system tests, installation, safety considerations, failure modes and effects analysis, data acquisition, and initial performance for the wind turbine are discussed. The design and analysis of the rotor, drive train, nacelle equipment, yaw drive mechanism and brake, tower, foundation, electricl system, and control systems are presented. The rotor includes the blades, hub, and pitch change mechanism. The drive train includes the low speed shaft, speed increaser, high speed shaft, and rotor brake. The electrical system includes the generator, switchgear, transformer, and utility connection. The control systems are the blade pitch, yaw, and generator control, and the safety system. Manual, automatic, and remote control are discussed. Systems analyses on dynamic loads and fatigue are presented

    Utilisation of transformer condition monitoring data

    Electricity grids are getting older and demand of electricity is rising. The critical com-ponents in electricity transmission systems should be monitored for assessing the need for maintenance. The electricity grid works more reliable when the condition infor-mation of important components are available continuously and thus larger catastrophic failures are preventable. Transformers are one of the critical components in electricity transmission. It is im-portant that they operate continuously. Transformers are reliable and long life compo-nents but the older the transformer is, the more sensitive it is about to fail. Condition monitoring provides improved data on the condition of transformer. With on-line condi-tion monitoring it is possible to detect developing failures and then a corrective action can be made in time. This study focuses on the utilization of transformer condition monitoring system in tra-ditional grid and in upcoming smart grid. The aim is to find out, where the condition monitoring data is needed in electricity transmission and distribution system manage-ment and how it is possible to carry the information to right place. This thesis introduces first the basics of a power system, the construction of a trans-former, transformer condition monitoring methods and condition monitoring data pro-cess. After that the management of a power system within traditional and smart grid is analyzed. The asset management process of both type power systems is explored through case study of transformer failure situations. In traditional power system the transformer maintenance bases mostly on time scheduled inspections.     Prognostic Reasoner based adaptive power management system for a more electric aircraft

    This research work presents a novel approach that addresses the concept of an adaptive power management system design and development framed in the Prognostics and Health Monitoring(PHM) perspective of an Electrical power Generation and distribution system(EPGS).PHM algorithms were developed to detect the health status of EPGS components which can accurately predict the failures and also able to calculate the Remaining Useful Life(RUL), and in many cases reconfigure for the identified system and subsystem faults. By introducing these approach on Electrical power Management system controller, we are gaining a few minutes lead time to failures with an accurate prediction horizon on critical systems and subsystems components that may introduce catastrophic secondary damages including loss of aircraft. The warning time on critical components and related system reconfiguration must permits safe return to landing as the minimum criteria and would enhance safety. A distributed architecture has been developed for the dynamic power management for electrical distribution system by which all the electrically supplied loads can be effectively controlled.A hybrid mathematical model based on the Direct-Quadrature (d-q) axis transformation of the generator have been formulated for studying various structural and parametric faults. The different failure modes were generated by injecting faults into the electrical power system using a fault injection mechanism. The data captured during these studies have been recorded to form a “Failure Database” for electrical system. A hardware in loop experimental study were carried out to validate the power management algorithm with FPGA-DSP controller.     Integration of Novel Sensors and Machine Learning for Predictive Maintenance in Medium Voltage Switchgear to Enable the Energy and Mobility Revolutions

    The development of renewable energies and smart mobility has profoundly impacted the future of the distribution grid. An increasing bidirectional energy flow stresses the assets of the distribution grid, especially medium voltage switchgear. This calls for improved maintenance strategies to prevent critical failures. Predictive maintenance, a maintenance strategy relying on current condition data of assets, serves as a guideline. Novel sensors covering thermal, mechanical, and partial discharge aspects of switchgear, enable continuous condition monitoring of some of the most critical assets of the distribution grid. Combined with machine learning algorithms, the demands put on the distribution grid by the energy and mobility revolutions can be handled. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art of all aspects of condition monitoring for medium voltage switchgear. Furthermore, we present an approach to develop a predictive maintenance system based on novel sensors and machine learning. We show how the existing medium voltage grid infrastructure can adapt these new needs on an economic scale

    Dynamical model of a fault phenomenon and reliability analysis for a circuit breaker in a vibration environment

    A circuit breaker often has a fault phenomenon in an electrical circuit, for example, its two contacts are kept away under a vibration environment. This will cause its electrical system not work normally. In the paper, a dynamical model is proposed for the circuit breaker applied with a low voltage under a vibration disturbance when the circuit breaker system is simplified as a cart-inverted pendulum system. Through some mechanical analyses, the nonlinear property of the circuit breaker is studied, and the fault phenomenon of the breaker in the vibration environment is described. With some simulations and experiments, the theoretical model is verified effectively when the circuit break is viewed as a switch in the electric system. Furthermore, the minimum amplitudes of a sinusoidal acceleration applied on the system to make the breaker have a fault phenomenon in the simulations are in good agreement with that in the experiments. Therefore, the dynamical model for representing the fault property of the circuit breaker is demonstrated feasibly with simulations and experiments

    Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Assessment of instrumental subsystem FMEA/CIL

    The McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company (MDAC) was selected in June 1986 to perform an Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Critical Items List (CIL). The IOA effort first completed an analysis of the Instrumentation hardware, generating draft failure modes and potential critical items. To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. The IOA results were then compared to the NASA FMEA/CIL baseline. A resolution of each discrepancy from the comparison is provided through additional analysis as required. The results of that comparison for the Orbiter Instrumentation hardware are documented. The IOA product for Instrumentation analysis consisted of 107 failure mode worksheets that resulted in 22 critical items being identified. Comparison was made to the Pre 51-L NASA baseline with 14 Post 51-L FMEAs added, which consists of 96 FMEAs and 18 CIL items. This comparison produced agreement on all but 25 FMEAs which caused differences in 5 CIL items
