EEG-Based User Reaction Time Estimation Using Riemannian Geometry Features
Riemannian geometry has been successfully used in many brain-computer
interface (BCI) classification problems and demonstrated superior performance.
In this paper, for the first time, it is applied to BCI regression problems, an
important category of BCI applications. More specifically, we propose a new
feature extraction approach for Electroencephalogram (EEG) based BCI regression
problems: a spatial filter is first used to increase the signal quality of the
EEG trials and also to reduce the dimensionality of the covariance matrices,
and then Riemannian tangent space features are extracted. We validate the
performance of the proposed approach in reaction time estimation from EEG
signals measured in a large-scale sustained-attention psychomotor vigilance
task, and show that compared with the traditional powerband features, the
tangent space features can reduce the root mean square estimation error by
4.30-8.30%, and increase the estimation correlation coefficient by 6.59-11.13%.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1702.0291
A Hybrid Approach to Detect Driver Drowsiness Utilizing Physiological Signals to Improve System Performance and Wearability
Driver drowsiness is a major cause of fatal accidents, injury, and property damage, and has become an area of substantial research attention in recent years. The present study proposes a method to detect drowsiness in drivers which integrates features of electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) to improve detection performance. The study measures differences between the alert and drowsy states from physiological data collected from 22 healthy subjects in a driving simulator-based study. A monotonous driving environment is used to induce drowsiness in the participants. Various time and frequency domain feature were extracted from EEG including time domain statistical descriptors, complexity measures and power spectral measures. Features extracted from the ECG signal included heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), including low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and LF/HF ratio. Furthermore, subjective sleepiness scale is also assessed to study its relationship with drowsiness. We used paired t-tests to select only statistically significant features (p < 0.05), that can differentiate between the alert and drowsy states effectively. Significant features of both modalities (EEG and ECG) are then combined to investigate the improvement in performance using support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The other main contribution of this paper is the study on channel reduction and its impact to the performance of detection. The proposed method demonstrated that combining EEG and ECG has improved the system’s performance in discriminating between alert and drowsy states, instead of using them alone. Our channel reduction analysis revealed that an acceptable level of accuracy (80%) could be achieved by combining just two electrodes (one EEG and one ECG), indicating the feasibility of a system with improved wearability compared with existing systems involving many electrodes. Overall, our results demonstrate that the proposed method can be a viable solution for a practical driver drowsiness system that is both accurate and comfortable to wear
Spatiotemporal Sparse Bayesian Learning with Applications to Compressed Sensing of Multichannel Physiological Signals
Energy consumption is an important issue in continuous wireless
telemonitoring of physiological signals. Compressed sensing (CS) is a promising
framework to address it, due to its energy-efficient data compression
procedure. However, most CS algorithms have difficulty in data recovery due to
non-sparsity characteristic of many physiological signals. Block sparse
Bayesian learning (BSBL) is an effective approach to recover such signals with
satisfactory recovery quality. However, it is time-consuming in recovering
multichannel signals, since its computational load almost linearly increases
with the number of channels.
This work proposes a spatiotemporal sparse Bayesian learning algorithm to
recover multichannel signals simultaneously. It not only exploits temporal
correlation within each channel signal, but also exploits inter-channel
correlation among different channel signals. Furthermore, its computational
load is not significantly affected by the number of channels. The proposed
algorithm was applied to brain computer interface (BCI) and EEG-based driver's
drowsiness estimation. Results showed that the algorithm had both better
recovery performance and much higher speed than BSBL. Particularly, the
proposed algorithm ensured that the BCI classification and the drowsiness
estimation had little degradation even when data were compressed by 80%, making
it very suitable for continuous wireless telemonitoring of multichannel

Computing driver tiredness and fatigue in automobile via eye tracking and body movements
The aim of this paper is to classify the driver tiredness and fatigue in automobile via eye tracking and body movements using deep learning based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm. Vehicle driver face localization serves as one of the most widely used real-world applications in fields like toll control, traffic accident scene analysis, and suspected vehicle tracking. The research proposed a CNN classifier for simultaneously localizing the region of human face and eye positioning. The classifier, rather than bounding rectangles, gives bounding quadrilaterals, which gives a more precise indication for vehicle driver face localization. The adjusted regions are preprocessed to remove noise and passed to the CNN classifier for real time processing. The preprocessing of the face features extracts connected components, filters them by size, and groups them into face expressions. The employed CNN is the well-known technology for human face recognition. One we aim to extract the facial landmarks from the frames, we will then leverage classification models and deep learning based convolutional neural networks that predict the state of the driver as 'Alert' or 'Drowsy' for each of the frames extracted. The CNN model could predict the output state labels (Alert/Drowsy) for each frame, but we wanted to take care of sequential image frames as that is extremely important while predicting the state of an individual. The process completes, if all regions have a sufficiently high score or a fixed number of retries are exhausted. The output consists of the detected human face type, the list of regions including the extracted mouth and eyes with recognition reliability through CNN with an accuracy of 98.57% with 100 epochs of training and testing
Real-time Stage 1 Sleep Detection and Warning System Using a Low-Cost EEG Headset
The goal of this thesis is to design and test a real-time Stage 1 sleep detection and warning system using a low-cost single dry-sensor EEG headset. Such a system would allow aircraft pilots or truck drivers to receive an auditory warning when they are beginning to fall asleep. The device designed in this study records a single EEG signal and filters it into low Alpha (7.5 - 9.25 Hz), high Alpha (10 - 11.75 Hz), low Beta (13 - 16.75 Hz), and high Beta (18 - 29.75 Hz) frequency bands. When the EEG transitions to match that of Stage 1 sleep for a short period of time, the device produces an audible alarm.
The system proved 81% effective at detecting sleep in a small sample group. All failures were due to false alarms. Compared to tradition sleep scoring, this device predicted and responded to the onset of drowsiness preceding stage 1 sleep
