    Influence of Intra-cell Traffic on the Output Power of Base Station in GSM

    In this paper we analyze the influence of intracell traffic in a GSM cell on the base station output power. It is proved that intracell traffic increases this power. If offered traffic is small, the increase of output power is equal to the part of intracell traffic. When the offered traffic and, as the result, call loss increase, the increase of output power becomes less. The results of calculation are verified by the computer simulation of traffic process in the GSM cell. The calculation and the simulation consider the uniform distribution of mobile users in the cell, but the conclusions are of a general nature

    Efficient transport and economic development: A transport survey analysis

    Efficient transport and economic growth in a city or country are inter-related. The overall focus of the survey conducted was to find the travel habits of the residents in the city of Kuching (Malaysia), so as to weigh the prospects of economic development in future. The three objectives were to evaluate the efficiency of the local bus transportation system, to confirm on the usage of car as the preferred mode of transport, and to identify areas of improvement to the system as well as analyzing the need for an alternative mode(s) of transportation. The quantitative and qualitative analysis is done on data to find the relationships between various variables measured. Car has been confirmed to be the popular mode of transport across the age groups, across the income groups and across the professions, whereas the bus transport was really not significant. The study identified the important characteristics and priorities in the travel behavior of Kuching residents. The results of the study will be significant in the planning of new economic developments that encourages the use of public transportation in Kuching city

    Agent-based modelling of air transport demand

    Constraints such as opening hours or passenger capacities influence travel options that can be offered by an airport and by the connecting airlines. If infrastructure, policy or technological measures modify transport options, then the benefits do not only depend on the technology, but also on possibly heterogeneous user preferences such as desired arrival times or on the availability of alternative travel modes. This paper proposes an agent-based, iterative assignment procedure to model European air traffic and German passenger demand on a microscopic level, capturing individual passenger preferences. Air transport technology is simulated microscopically, i.e. each aircraft is represented as single unit with attached attributes such as departure time, flight duration or seat availability. Trip-chaining and delay propagation can be added. Microsimulation is used to verify and assess passengers’ choices of travel alternatives, where those choices improve over iterations until an agent-based stochastic user equilibrium is reached. This requires fast simulation models, thus, similar to other approaches in air traffic modelling a queue model is used. In contrast to those approaches, the queue model in this work is solved algorithmically. Overall, the approach is suited to analyze, forecast and evaluate the consequences of mid-distance transport measures

    Food Superstores, Food Deserts and Traffic Generation in the UK: A Semi-Parametric Regression Approach

    This study contributes another route towards explaining and tackling ‘food desert’ effects. It features the estimation of a (semi-parametric) trip attraction model for food superstores in the UK using a composite dataset. The data comprises information from the UK Census of Population, the NOMIS (National Online Manpower Information System) archive and traffic and site-specific data from the TRICS (Trip Rate Information Computer System) databases. The results indicate that traffic to a given food superstore, ceteris paribus, increases with household car ownership, store parking provision, site size (floor space), and distance to the nearest competitor. Furthermore, increases in public transport provision are shown to be associated with increasing car trips. This latter effect is discussed in the light of planning policy for development control purposes and a role linked to the reinforcement of ‘food deserts’. The results also reveal activity-specific household economies of scope and scale. It is suggested how these may also further perpetuate unsustainable development and ‘food desert’ characteristics.Traffic Generation, Food Superstores, Food Deserts, Activity Based Travel, Sustainable Development, Modelling

    Transport infrastructures and regional development: The discovery of centrality of the container terminal of Gioia Tauro in the Mediterranian

    European container terminals of Mediterranean are enjoying of a discovery on the more dynamics routes of the whole world that link Europe to Far East-Pacific. This centrality consists in the acquisition of a relative advantage in terms of 6 -7 days less of navigation respect to big ports of call of North Europe. In this framework, the new installation of Gioia Tauro?s container terminal is demonstrating to be one of the most important junctions of transhipment of South Europe. This could manifest completely his potentialities in the same measures in which will be guided at the same time adequate territorial policies and lay the bases for logistic systems of high level. This means to direct in the national and continental hinterland the construction of a system of infrastructures of road and railway junctions necessarily adequate and advanced in terms of technician level and capacity of response. Only in this sense it will be possible to initiate a competition forms among economic systems in a territorial base rather than among single productive units. In fact, after a ten-year period of interventions for sectors, transeuropean network of transportation could start to considered as a first systematic tentative of integrated actions among transportation politics and regional politics of European Union. By starting, therefore, by a systemic approach, the paper turns to a simulation model and to specific inquiry on the field to gather the impacts of the container terminal to territorial level. The aim is to verify if and in which way the politics of national and community transport linked to the birth of container port of Gioia Tauro, will assume the features of a complex regional development politics able to mitigate and/or prevent the imbalances become worse in the ambit of European Union.
