    Defective and Clustered Graph Colouring

    Consider the following two ways to colour the vertices of a graph where the requirement that adjacent vertices get distinct colours is relaxed. A colouring has "defect" dd if each monochromatic component has maximum degree at most dd. A colouring has "clustering" cc if each monochromatic component has at most cc vertices. This paper surveys research on these types of colourings, where the first priority is to minimise the number of colours, with small defect or small clustering as a secondary goal. List colouring variants are also considered. The following graph classes are studied: outerplanar graphs, planar graphs, graphs embeddable in surfaces, graphs with given maximum degree, graphs with given maximum average degree, graphs excluding a given subgraph, graphs with linear crossing number, linklessly or knotlessly embeddable graphs, graphs with given Colin de Verdi\`ere parameter, graphs with given circumference, graphs excluding a fixed graph as an immersion, graphs with given thickness, graphs with given stack- or queue-number, graphs excluding KtK_t as a minor, graphs excluding Ks,tK_{s,t} as a minor, and graphs excluding an arbitrary graph HH as a minor.     Defective and Clustered Choosability of Sparse Graphs

    An (improper) graph colouring has "defect" dd if each monochromatic subgraph has maximum degree at most dd, and has "clustering" cc if each monochromatic component has at most cc vertices. This paper studies defective and clustered list-colourings for graphs with given maximum average degree. We prove that every graph with maximum average degree less than 2d+2d+2k\frac{2d+2}{d+2} k is kk-choosable with defect dd. This improves upon a similar result by Havet and Sereni [J. Graph Theory, 2006]. For clustered choosability of graphs with maximum average degree mm, no (1ϵ)m(1-\epsilon)m bound on the number of colours was previously known. The above result with d=1d=1 solves this problem. It implies that every graph with maximum average degree mm is 34m+1\lfloor{\frac{3}{4}m+1}\rfloor-choosable with clustering 2. This extends a result of Kopreski and Yu [Discrete Math., 2017] to the setting of choosability. We then prove two results about clustered choosability that explore the trade-off between the number of colours and the clustering. In particular, we prove that every graph with maximum average degree mm is 710m+1\lfloor{\frac{7}{10}m+1}\rfloor-choosable with clustering 99, and is 23m+1\lfloor{\frac{2}{3}m+1}\rfloor-choosable with clustering O(m)O(m). As an example, the later result implies that every biplanar graph is 8-choosable with bounded clustering. This is the best known result for the clustered version of the earth-moon problem. The results extend to the setting where we only consider the maximum average degree of subgraphs with at least some number of vertices. Several applications are presented

    Deciding Relaxed Two-Colourability: A Hardness Jump

    We study relaxations of proper two-colourings, such that the order of the induced monochromatic components in one (or both) of the colour classes is bounded by a constant. A colouring of a graph G is called (C1, C2)-relaxed if every monochromatic component induced by vertices of the first (second) colour is of order at most C1 (C2, resp.). We prove that the decision problem ‘Is there a (1, C)-relaxed colouring of a given graph G of maximum degree 3?' exhibits a hardness jump in the component order C. In other words, there exists an integer f(3) such that the decision problem is NP-hard for every 2 ≤ C < f(3), while every graph of maximum degree 3 is (1, f(3))-relaxed colourable. We also show f(3) ≤ 22 by way of a quasilinear time algorithm, which finds a (1, 22)-relaxed colouring of any graph of maximum degree 3. Both the bound on f(3) and the running time greatly improve earlier results. We also study the symmetric version, that is, when C1 = C2, of the relaxed colouring problem and make the first steps towards establishing a similar hardness jum

    Multigraphs with High Chromatic Index

    In this thesis we take a specialized approach to edge-colouring by focusing exclusively on multigraphs with high chromatic index. The bulk of our results can be classified into three categories. First, we prove results which aim to characterize those multigraphs achieving known upper bounds. For example, Goldberg's Theorem says that χ'≤ Δ+1+(Δ-2}/(g₀+1) (where χ' denotes chromatic index, Δ denotes maximum degree, and g₀ denotes odd girth). We characterize this bound by proving that for a connected multigraph G, χ'= Δ+1+(Δ-2}/(g₀+1) if and only if G=μC_g₀ and (g₀+1)|2(μ-1) (where μ denotes maximum edge-multiplicity). Our second category of results are new upper bounds for chromatic index in multigraphs, and accompanying polynomial-time edge-colouring algorithms. Our bounds are all approximations to the famous Seymour-Goldberg Conjecture, which asserts that χ'≤ max{⌈ρ⌉, Δ+1} (where ρ=max{(2|E[S]|)/(|S|-1): S⊆V, |S|≥3 and odd}). For example, we refine Goldberg's classical Theorem by proving that χ'≤ max{⌈ρ⌉, Δ+1+(Δ-3)/(g₀+3)}. Our third category of results are characterizations of high chromatic index in general, with particular focus on our approximation results. For example, we completely characterize those multigraphs with χ'> Δ+1+(Δ-3)/(g₀+3). The primary method we use to prove results in this thesis is the method of Tashkinov trees. We first solidify the theory behind this method, and then provide general edge-colouring results depending on Tashkinov trees. We also explore the limits of this method, including the possibility of vertex-colouring graphs which are not line graphs of multigraphs, and the importance of Tashkinov trees with regard to the Seymour-Goldberg Conjecture

    Defective Coloring on Classes of Perfect Graphs

    In Defective Coloring we are given a graph GG and two integers χd\chi_d, Δ\Delta^* and are asked if we can χd\chi_d-color GG so that the maximum degree induced by any color class is at most Δ\Delta^*. We show that this natural generalization of Coloring is much harder on several basic graph classes. In particular, we show that it is NP-hard on split graphs, even when one of the two parameters χd\chi_d, Δ\Delta^* is set to the smallest possible fixed value that does not trivialize the problem (χd=2\chi_d = 2 or Δ=1\Delta^* = 1). Together with a simple treewidth-based DP algorithm this completely determines the complexity of the problem also on chordal graphs. We then consider the case of cographs and show that, somewhat surprisingly, Defective Coloring turns out to be one of the few natural problems which are NP-hard on this class. We complement this negative result by showing that Defective Coloring is in P for cographs if either χd\chi_d or Δ\Delta^* is fixed; that it is in P for trivially perfect graphs; and that it admits a sub-exponential time algorithm for cographs when both χd\chi_d and Δ\Delta^* are unbounded

    Self-stabilisation of cellular automata on tilings

    Given a finite set of local constraints, we seek a cellular automaton (i.e., a local and uniform algorithm) that self-stabilises on the configurations that satisfy these constraints. More precisely, starting from a finite perturbation of a valid configuration, the cellular automaton must eventually fall back to the space of valid configurations where it remains still. We allow the cellular automaton to use extra symbols, but in that case, the extra symbols can also appear in the initial finite perturbation. For several classes of local constraints (e.g., kk-colourings with k3k\neq 3, and North-East deterministic constraints), we provide efficient self-stabilising cellular automata with or without additional symbols that wash out finite perturbations in linear or quadratic time, but also show that there are examples of local constraints for which the self-stabilisation problem is inherently hard. We note that the optimal self-stabilisation speed is the same for all local constraints that are isomorphic to one another. We also consider probabilistic cellular automata rules and show that in some cases, the use of randomness simplifies the problem. In the deterministic case, we show that if finite perturbations are corrected in linear time, then the cellular automaton self-stabilises even starting from a random perturbation of a valid configuration, that is, when errors in the initial configuration occur independently with a sufficiently low density.Comment: 43 pages, 28 figure
