    The prospect of using LES and DES in engineering design, and the research required to get there

    In this paper we try to look into the future to divine how large eddy and detached eddy simulations (LES and DES, respectively) will be used in the engineering design process about 20-30 years from now.     Verification of Unstructured Grid Adaptation Components

    Adaptive unstructured grid techniques have made limited impact on production analysis workflows where the control of discretization error is critical to obtaining reliable simulation results. Recent progress has matured a number of independent implementations of flow solvers, error estimation methods, and anisotropic grid adaptation mechanics. Known differences and previously unknown differences in grid adaptation components and their integrated processes are identified here for study. Unstructured grid adaptation tools are verified using analytic functions and the Code Comparison Principle. Three analytic functions with different smoothness properties are adapted to show the impact of smoothness on implementation differences. A scalar advection-diffusion problem with an analytic solution that models a boundary layer is adapted to test individual grid adaptation components. Laminar flow over a delta wing and turbulent flow over an ONERA M6 wing are verified with multiple, independent grid adaptation procedures to show consistent convergence to fine-grid forces and a moment. The scalar problems illustrate known differences in a grid adaptation component implementation and a previously unknown interaction between components. The wing adaptation cases in the current study document a clear improvement to existing grid adaptation procedures. The stage is set for the infusion of verified grid adaptation into production fluid flow simulations

    A coupled CFD approach for combustor-turbine interaction

    The current approach in the industry to numerically investigate the flow in a gas turbine considers each component, such as combustor and turbine, as a stand-alone part, involving no or very minor interactions with other parts, mainly applied through static boundary conditions. Efficient and very specialised CFD codes have been developed in the past to address the different flow characteristic occurring in the different regions of the engine. In order to meet the future requirements in terms of fuel consumption and pollutants emissions, an integrated approach capable of capturing all the possible interactions between different components is necessary. An efficient and accurate way to achieve integrated simulations is to couple already existing specialised codes in a zonal type of coupling. In this Thesis work a methodology to couple an incompressible/low-Mach number pressure-based combustion code with a compressible density-based turbomachinery code for industrial application has been developed. In particular two different couplings have been implemented: the first, based on the exchange of existing boundary conditions through files, comes as a completely separated tools from the original codes, of which no modifications are required, and it is applied to steady state simulations; the second instead, based on the exchange of boundary conditions and body forces through message passing, requires some modifications of the source codes and it is applied to both steady and unsteady cases. A simple analysis shows that not all the primitive variables can be made continuous at the coupling interface between the two codes and a compromise was found that allows minor discontinuity in some of the variables while achieving mass flow conservation and continuity of the temperature profiles. The coupling methodology has been applied to a simplified but realistic industrial case, consisting of a RQL (Rich Burn - Quick quench - Lean burn) combustor coupled with the first stage of the HP turbine. The analysis of the steady case has shown that the combustor field is affected as far as 150% axial chord lengths upstream of the blades leading edge, affecting RTDF and OTDF at the interfaces. In the turbine stage significant differences in both efficiency and degree of reaction were found in the coupled cases with respect to standard standalone simulations using radial inlet profiles. The analysis of the unsteady simulation has instead shown the hot streaks behaviour across the turbine, that are only partially mitigated by the stator blades and, due to segregation effect of hot and cold gases, migrate towards the pressure side of the rotor blades

    CFD prediction and validation of ship-bank interaction in a canal

    This paper utilizes CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods to investigate the bank effects on a tanker moving straight ahead at low speed in a canal characterized by surface piercing banks. For varying water depths and ship-to-bank distances, the sinkage and trim as well as the viscous hydrodynamic forces on the hull are predicted mainly by a steady state RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver, in which the double model approximation is adopted to simulate the flat free surface. A potential flow method is also applied to evaluate the effect of the free surface and viscosity on the solutions. In addition, focus is placed on V&V (Verification and Validation) based on a grid convergence study and comparison with EFD (Experimental Fluid Dynamics) data, as well as the exploration of the modelling error in RANS computations to enable more accurate and reliable predictions of the bank effects

    The unstructured, mixed-element, cell-centered, finite-volume flow solver USM3D is enhanced with new capabilities including parallelization, line generation for general unstructured grids, improved discretization scheme, and optimized iterative solver. The paper reports on the new developments to the flow solver and assesses the accuracy, scalability, and efficiency. The USM3D assessments are conducted using a baseline method and the recent hierarchical adaptive nonlinear iteration method framework. Two benchmark turbulent flows, namely, a subsonic separated flow around a three-dimensional hemisphere-cylinder configuration and a transonic flow around the ONERA M6 wing are considered

    Implementation and Verification of a Synthetic Eddy Method (SEM) in the Eagle3d Compressible Flow Solver

    The objective of this thesis is to implement and evaluate a Synthetic Eddy Method (SEM) into the Eagle3D compressible ow solver. Both the ability of Eagle3D to resolve unsteady turbulent ow field and capability of the SEM to reproduce given Reynolds stress profiles to start realistic turbulent behavior are verified using common academic cases. Eagle3D is a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver using a novel combination of a Bounded Central Differencing (BCD) scheme with Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) approximation to reduce numerical dissipation. SEM is a modern synthetic turbulence method able to reproduce an arbitrary Reynolds stresses specification on discretionary geometries while keeping computational costs low. The Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) capability of Eagle3D is evaluated using the flow over a cylinder and compared to results by ANSYS Fluent. The SEM is used to reproduce unsteady inlet conditions for channel and at plate cases and relayed into Eagle3D. Common ow parameters such as skin friction, Reynolds stresses and velocity components are compared against analytic, Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and periodic LES to estimate the performance of this solver combination in accuracy and development length. Parametric studies of grid dependence, varying upstream Reynolds-Averaged Naiver-Stokes (RANS) data and prescribed eddy length scale are performed. Modifications to the SEM are prescribed and tested where suitable. Further studies and modifications to the SEM based on the obtained data are suggested

    Computational Fluid Dynamics Methods Used in the Development of the Space Launch System Liftoff and Transition Lineloads Databases

    The objective of this paper is to document the reasoning and trade studies that supported the selection of appropriate tools for constructing aerodynamic lineload databases for the Liftoff and Transition phases of flight for launch vehicles. These decisions were made amid the maturation of an evolving workflow for generating databases on variants of the Space Launch System launch vehicle, with most being based on results from brief developmental studies performed in response to specific, unforeseen challenges that were encountered in analyzing a given configuration. This report is intended to provide a summary of the results and the decision-making processes chronologically over the design cycles of various configurations, starting with isolated free-air bodies for the Block 1 Crew, then the Block 1B Crew and Cargo configurations, and most recently the Block 1B Crew configuration in proximity to the launch tower. The results from these analyses led to the selection of the CREATE-AV Kestrel flowsolver for simulating these problems. The need to accurately capture the expected leeward-wake flow field characteristics required the use of Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) method, for which the vorticity magnitude was employed as the solution Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) function over the off-body Cartesian grid region. In addition, the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) model is used to account for the flow turbulence effects
